Lauris Ducasse, Alain Pumir,

Turbulent motion increases very significantly the collision rate between particles in dilute suspensions. In the case of heavy inertial particles, the collision rate enhancement results both from the intermittent concentration in the flow, and also from the large relative velocity between colliding particles. The latter effect is a consequence of the ejection of particles out of curved streamlines, denoted here as the ``sling effect.'' Here, we quantitatively study the collision rate between heavy ...

Tracer particles on the surface of a turbulent flow have a very intermittent distribution. This preferential concentration effect is studied in a two-dimensional synthetic compressible flow, both in the inertial (self-similar) and in the dissipative (smooth) range of scales, as a function of the compressibility $\mathcal{C}$. The second moment of the concentration coarse grained over a scale $\mathit{r}$, $⟨{n}_{r}^{2}⟩$, behaves as a power law in both the inertial and the dissipative ranges of scale, with ...

Lasso peptides are bacterial ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides. They have sparked increasing interest in peptide-based drug development because of their compact, interlocked structure, which offers superior stability and protein-binding capacity. Disulfide bond-containing lasso peptides are rare and exhibit highly sought-after activities. In an effort to expand the repertoire of such molecules, we heterologously expressed, in Streptomyces coelicolor, the gene cluster ...

Astringency elicited by tannins is usually assessed by tasting. Alternative methods involving tannin precipitation have been proposed, but they remain time-consuming. Our goal was to propose a faster method and investigate the links between wine composition and astringency. Red wines covering a wide range of astringency intensities, assessed by sensory analysis, were selected. Prediction models based on multiple linear regression (MLR) were built using UV spectrophotometry (190–400 nm) and chemical ...

Ab initio calculations together with vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) have been used for studying the conformations of a quinoline-derived oligoamide bearing a terminal chiral residue. Three helically folded conformers of the dimer, trimer, and tetramer forms of the oligomer were optimized at the density functional theory (DFT) level using the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G* basis set. For each form, the three conformers differ in their helical handedness and in the conformation of the chiral ...

Abstract A semi‐empirical valence bond/Hartree–Fock (VB/HF) method is developed to calculate one‐ and two‐electron interactions between molecular fragments in conducting supramolecular stacks. This fragment orbital‐based formalism allows for consistent extraction of an effective Hamiltonian defined as a “frontier orbital” model. This Hamiltonian quantitatively describes transfer and electrostatic interactions between conducting electrons, while reducing the active space so dramatically that the electronic ...

SMS 201–995 (200 μg, sc, three times daily) reduced, but did not normalize, serum GH levels. Complete and prolonged control of GH secretion was obtained with a 600-μg daily continuous sc infusion (CSI), and the patient was treated in this way for 6 months. Rapid improvement of clinical signs and symptoms of acromegaly occurred, as did major tumor shrinkage. The other pituitary functions did ...

Rationale: Klf (kruppel-like factor) 2 is critical to establish and maintain endothelial integrity. Objective: Therefore, determining upstream and downstream mediators of Klf2 would lead to alternative therapeutic targets in cardiovascular disease management. Methods and Results: Here we identify Dhh (desert hedgehog) as a downstream effector of Klf2, whose expression in endothelial cells (ECs) is upregulated by shear stress and decreased by inflammatory cytokines. Consequently, we show that Dhh knockdown ...

Abstract Microcin J25 is a potent antibacterial peptide produced by Escherichia coli AY25. It displays a lasso structure, which consists of a knot involving an N‐terminal macrolactam ring through which the C‐terminal tail is threaded and sterically trapped. In this study, we rationally designed and performed site‐specific mutations in order to pinpoint the sequence determinants of the lasso topology. Structures of the resulting variants were analysed by a combination of methods (mass spectrometry, ...

We propose a theoretical study of the nonlinear propagation of a Gaussian laser beam in a mixture of two liquids. Retaining electrostriction (dipole radiation forces), thermal expansion, and thermodiffusion (Soret effect) as the major mechanisms in the perturbation of the medium by the field, we analyze their relative importances in the nonlinear refraction and nonlinear beam power losses. Our attention is mostly focused on the case of mixtures close to critical (consolute) points, where the nonlinearities ...

The atomization of liquids into a spray is an important process in many industrial applications and particularly in the aero-engine sector. Conventional air-blast injectors in aircraft engines today use aerodynamic shearing effects to atomize the liquid fuel. However, at operating conditions where the air velocity is below 30 m/s (such as ground start and high altitude restart) the atomization quality is poor. Consequently combustion is less efficient with high pollutant emissions. The objective ...

Identifying new sources of disease resistance and the corresponding underlying resistance mechanisms remains very challenging, particularly in Monocots. Moreover, the modification of most disease resistance pathways made so far is detrimental to tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought.

Abstract Quantum‐chemical calculations are performed at the semiempirical Valence‐Bond/Hartree–Fock level on model 1D aggregates to assess the electronic structure at pentacene/C 60 heterojunctions. We show that the asymmetry of the electrostatic potential at the interface profoundly impacts the energy landscape explored by the charges, as they move away from the interface. Depending on the orientation of the pentacene molecules with respect to the interface, electrostatic effects may favor either ...
