The virulent lactococcal phage P087 was isolated from a dairy environment in 1978. This phage was then recognized as the reference member for one of the ten phage groups currently known to infect Lactococcus lactis strains. The double-stranded DNA genome of this Siphoviridae phage is composed of 60,074 bp and is circularly permuted. Five tRNA and 88 orfs were found within an uncommon genome architecture. Eleven structural proteins were also identified through SDS-PAGE and LC-MS/MS analyses. Of note, ...

Mining practices, chiefly froth flotation, are being critically reassessed to replace their use of biohazardous chemical reagents in favor of biofriendly alternatives as a path toward green processes. In this regard, this study aimed at evaluating the interactions of peptides, as potential floatation collectors, with quartz using phage display and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Quartz-selective peptide sequences were initially identified by phage display at pH = 9 and further modeled by a robust ...

In the arms race against bacteria, bacteriophages have evolved diverse anti-CRISPR proteins (Acrs) that block CRISPR-Cas immunity. Acrs play key roles in the molecular coevolution of bacteria with their predators, use a variety of mechanisms of action, and provide tools to regulate Cas-based genome manipulation. Here, we present structural and functional analyses of AcrIIA6, an Acr from virulent phages, exploring its unique anti-CRISPR action. Our cryo-EM structures and functional data of AcrIIA6 ...

The virulent lactococcal phage KSY1 possesses a large elongated capsid (223 nm long, 45 nm wide) and a short tail (32 nm). This phage of the Podoviridae group (C3 morphotype) has a linear 79,232-bp double-stranded DNA genome, which encodes 131 putative proteins and 3 tRNAs. This is the first description of the genome of a phage of this morphotype. KSY1 possesses a T7-like transcription system, including an RNA polymerase and a series of specific promoters, showing sequence homology to other known T7- ...

Proximal humerus fractures (PHF) are osteoporotic fractures that affect women over 70 years of age. Like fractures of the femoral neck they have become a public health concern. As the population ages there is an increase in the number of people in poor general condition with an increased risk of falls on fragile bones. The incidence of these fractures has increased by 15% per year. All patients managed for PHF in our center in the past year were included in this prospective study (prospective cohort ...

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a Gam-negative bacterium responsible for furunculosis in fish. Because this aquatic bacterial pathogen has a rich reservoir of antibiotic-resistant genes, it is essential to investigate antibacterial alternatives, including the use of phages. Yet, we have previously demonstrated the inefficiency of a phage cocktail designed against A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains due to a phage resistance phenotype associated to a prophage, namely Prophage 3. ...
