Alaine Low,

A century of constitutional government in the United States has served to emphasize the wisdom of Hamilton's warning of “the tendency of the legislative authority to absorb every other.” He clearly foresaw and attempted to guard against, dangers that today are only too apparent. “In governments purely republican,” he wrote, “this tendency is almost irresistible. The representatives of the people, in a popular assembly, seem sometimes to fancy that they are the people themselves, and betray strong symptoms ...

Abstract The psychological and intellectual sequelae of childhood leukemia and its treatment were examined in 48 children with acute leukemia in long remission. Verbal and performance IQ values were determined in addition to full scale IQ. Performance was worse than the verbal IQ in children who were less than six years old at the time of diagnosis. Cranial irradiation even in repeated doses of 2,400 rads had no effect on these children's intellects. Most of the patients, however, showed severe ...

Light chain isotype suppression in multiple myeloma has been reported in the plasma cells of the lamina propria of the gut (Leonard et al, 1979). In this paper we present further evidence of systemic suppression of the light chain isotype of the paraprotein expressed on normal peripheral blood lymphocytes in myeloma. Twenty patients with myeloma in plateau phase were monitored over 6 months for the expression of either kappa or lambda light chains on the surface of peripheral blood lymphocytes using ...

Eighty-one children with malignancies and their families were investigated for the psychosocial changes that take place during the course of the disease. Seventeen patients were in the initial phase of treatment, 24 were in first remission, 14 were long-term survivors already off therapy, 11 were in relapse, and 15 children died 1-5 years before this study. Detailed personal interviews with the parents showed profound changes in the families' life and severe problems in adapting to the new situation. ...

This study analyses the process of urban class formation among Muslim workers in Kano, Northern Nigeria. it examines the interaction between Islamic nationalism and new forms of class consciousness and culture generated by industrialisation and the petroleum boom during the seventies. Paul Lubeck argues that, when industralisation is introduced from the West, Islamic nationalism supports class consciousness. The book begins with a review of the theoretical orientation and the historical background ...

S ummary . This study describes the presence of small numbers of common acute lymphocytic leukaemia antigen (CALLA, CD10)‐positive lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of patients with multiple myeloma. A significant correlation (0.001 < P <0.01) was found between the lack of light chain isotype suppression (LCIS), which is characteristic of progressive myeloma, and the presence of CALLA‐positive lymphocytes. Sixty patients with multiple myeloma, four with benign monoclonal gammopathy (BMG) and seven with ...

ABSTRACT Although Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) have been well studied across their North American range, few data are available for populations that breed in high-elevation habitats. We collected data over six years on the demography of a population of Savannah Sparrows (P. s. anthinus) breeding in alpine tundra and sub-alpine meadows in northern British Columbia, Canada. The mean duration of the breeding season at our site was 45.5 d, and pairs produced a maximum of one brood per ...

The evolutionary demand for rapid nerve impulse conduction led to the process of myelination-dependent organization of axons into distinct molecular domains. These domains include the node of Ranvier flanked by highly specialized paranodal domains where myelin loops and axolemma orchestrate the axoglial septate junctions. These junctions are formed by interactions between a glial isoform of neurofascin (Nfasc(NF155)) and axonal Caspr and Cont. Here we report the generation of myelinating glia-specific ...

Incubation is an energetically costly activity for birds, and may be particularly challenging in alpine environments where ambient temperatures are typically low but can fluctuate widely. Little is known about how incubating birds respond to cold temperatures such as those that occur in alpine environments. We measured incubation rhythms in horned larks (Eremophila alpestris) breeding in alpine tundra in British Columbia and found quadratic relationships between ambient temperature and the total ...

An integrated forecasting and data assimilation system has been and is continuing to be developed by the Meteorological Research Branch (MRB) in partnership with the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) of Environment Canada. Part III of this series of papers presents the nonhydrostatic formulation and some sample results. The nonhydrostatic formulation uses Laprise's hydrostatic pressure as the basis for its vertical coordinate. This allows the departure from the hydrostatic formulation to be incorporated ...

Nineteen olfactory receptor (OR) genes were isolated from three OR subfamilies in two species of marmoset (Callithrix). Olfactory receptor 912-93 has high sequence similarity among marmosets and between marmosets and humans, suggesting strong conservation of function. All of the remaining seventeen OR genes identified from subfamilies 3A and 1E were pseudogenes. Following pseudogene formation, marmoset OR genes in both 1E and 3A subfamilies underwent duplications, indel events and a high rate of nucleotide ...

The association of tumor differentiation and estrogen receptor expression with the prognosis of breast cancer has been well established. Nevertheless, little is yet reported about the association of morphological characteristics of the tumor, estrogen receptor status and polymorphisms in low penetrance genes. The aim of the present study was to investigate a possible association between DNA repair gene polymorphisms (XRCC1, XPD, XRCC3, and RAD51) with histological type, grade and hormone receptor ...

Environmental variation along elevational gradients can strongly influence life history strategies in vertebrates. We investigated variation in life history patterns between a horned lark subspecies nesting in high elevation alpine habitat Eremophila alpestris articola and a second subspecies in lower elevation grassland and sandy shoreline habitats E. a. strigata . Gene loss has been proposed to play a major role in adaptive evolution, and recent studies are beginning to reveal its importance in human evolution. However, the potential consequence of a single gene-loss event upon the fates of functionally interrelated genes is poorly understood. Here, we use the purine metabolic pathway as a model system in which to explore this important question. The loss of urate oxidase (UOX) activity, a necessary step in this pathway, has occurred independently in the hominoid ...

The formation of paranodal axo-glial junctions is critical for the rapid and efficient propagation of nerve impulses. Genetic ablation of genes encoding the critical paranodal proteins Caspr, contactin (Cont), and the myelinating glia-specific isoform of Neurofascin (Nfasc NF155 ) results in the disruption of the paranodal axo-glial junctions, loss of ion channel segregation, and impaired nerve conduction, but the mechanisms regulating their interactions remain elusive. Here, we report that loss of ...

The Oleriina is one of the most speciose subtribes of the neotropical nymphalid butterfly tribe Ithomiini. They are widely distributed across the Andes and Amazonian lowlands and like other ithomiines they are involved in complex mimicry rings. This subtribe is of particular interest because it contains the most diverse ithomiine genus, Oleria, as well as two genera, Megoleria and Hyposcada, that feed on hostplants not utilized elsewhere in the tribe. Here we present the first comprehensive species- ...
