Inelastic scattering of 340 MeV and 480 MeV α-particles has been measured on 58Ni, 116Sn and 208Pb up to 60 MeV excitation energy. Consistent background subtraction and multipole analysis has provided the repartition of multipole strength for all three nuclei. The so-obtained response functions show the already known low-energy giant resonances in a detailed way, as well as new giant resonances at high energy.

The elastic-scattering angular distribution for the reaction of $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ on $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ has been measured at ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=1503$ MeV. Optical-model analysis shows that the data determine the nuclear potential between 4 and 6 fm, i.e., well inside the strong-absorption radius. Above ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}=3\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$, the main contribution to the cross section comes from negative-angle scattering; however, the measured angular distribution ...

Elastic scattering of 288,340,480 and 699 MeV Alpha-particles was measured on 208Pb, 116Sn and 58Ni. The data were analysed in terms of a phenomenological optical model. The optical potentials obtained were found to vary consistently with the target nucleus and the incident energy. The radial zone where the potentials are well determined was studied in detail. The data for 208Pb were also analysed with a folding model. The energy dependence of the strong-absorption radius and of the reaction cross ...

The excitation and electromagnetic decay of the giant resonance region (8--15 MeV) in $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ have been measured with the $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$${(}^{17}$O${,}^{17}$O') reaction at 84 MeV/nucleon. The study of coincidences between scattered $^{17}\mathrm{O}$ ions and photon decays to the $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ ground state, including angular correlations, serves to isolate the isovector giant dipole resonance and enable us to investigate the mechanisms of its excitation and decay in detail. The angular ...

The giant dipole resonance built on excited states was studied in $^{110}$,112Sn nuclei at excitation energies of 62, 80, 110, and 130 MeV, by measuring \ensuremath{\gamma} rays following heavy ion fusion reactions $^{16}$O${+\mathrm{}}^{94}$Mo and $^{19}$F${+\mathrm{}}^{93}$Nb. The energy of the dipole resonance was found to be 14.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4 MeV independent of excitation energy. This value is approximately 1 MeV below the extrapolated ground state value. The width increases almost quadratically ...

We report the observation of the giant dipole resonance in Pb nuclei near A\ensuremath{\sim}200 at excitation energies of 66, 88, and 103 MeV and with average angular momenta of 25\ensuremath{\Elzxh} to 44\ensuremath{\Elzxh}. The fits to the dipole strength distribution require two components indicating a strongly deformed nuclear shape. Using width parameters consistent with the ground-state systematics of heavy deformed nuclei gives ${E}_{1}$=11.9 MeV, ${E}_{2}$apeq215.6 MeV, and prolate deformation ...

High energy photons (20<Eγ<150 MeV) produced in inclusive 14N+Ni→γ+X reactions were unambiguously observed in a Pb-glass detector array. The measured angular distributions exhibit a predominant dipole pattern. This rules out statistical and/or nucleon-nucleon production mechanisms. The data indicate instead a more coherent production mechanism reflecting the direction of relative motion of target and projectile.

Elastic and inelastic angular distributions of 43 MeV/nucleon 86Kr on 208Pb have been measured. Coulomb excitation of the low-lying collective states has a much smaller effect on the elastic angular distribution than observed at low bombarding energy. The inelastic angular distributions to the first 2+ states in 86Kr and 208Pb are well reproduced by coupled-channel calculations using adopted B(E2) values. Above E∗ = 7MeV the inelastic spectra are dominated by Coulomb excitation of the isovector giant ...

The Charge exchange reaction 12C(12C,12N)12B has been studied at 30 and 70 MeV/u in order to investigate the energy dependence of the two reaction mechanisms involved: the direct charge exchange and the proton-neutron exchange. Microscopic calculations have been performed for both processes and an almost quantitative description of the data could be achieved. The p-n exchange is strong at low energies and has a maximum at about 30 MeV/u. The direct process dominates for all states only at energies ...

Elastic scattering of 94 MeV/nucleon 16O on 40Ca, 90Zr, and 208Pb was measured, completing similar measurements on 12C and 28Si. Optical model analysis of the whole set of data shows that the sensitive region where the nuclear potential is determined moves inwards as the mass of the target decreases. This determination is more precise for light systems which present a strong negative angle scattering contribution in the angular distribution. The data have also been analyzed in the framework of the ...

Inelastic scattering of 84 MeV/nucleon 17O on 208Pb has been measured between 1.5° ⩽θCM⩽5.0°. The giant resonance structure near 12 MeV is excited with a differential cross section of more than 2b/sr and exhibits a peak-to-continuum ratio as large as 6 to 1. The major part of the cross section can be ascribed to Coulomb excitation of the isovector giant dipole and the giant quadrupole resonance. From the Coulomb excitation of the GQR we deduce a B (E2) fx = 0.53 ±0.11 e2b2 which is that expected for ...
