Background: Warfarin reduces the risk for ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) but increases the risk for hemorrhage. Dabigatran is a fixed-dose, oral direct thrombin inhibitor with similar or reduced rates of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with AF compared with those of warfarin. Objective: To estimate the quality-adjusted survival, costs, and cost-effectiveness of dabigatran compared with adjusted-dose warfarin for preventing ischemic stroke in patients ...

Mark T. Bradshaw, Amy P. Hutton, Alan J. Marcus, Hassan Tehranian,

We investigate three facets of cross-sectional variation in the risk of stock price crashes: actual crash incidence, and two predictors of that risk, accounting opacity and the option smirk curve. We show that all three of these variables are related. Option smirks and accounting opacity each independently predict cross-sectional variation in crash risk and crash magnitude. The slope of the smirk curve and opacity are themselves correlated at extremely high levels of statistical significance, indicating ...

We investigate the relation between the transparency of financial statements and the distribution of stock returns. Using earnings management as a measure of opacity, we find that opacity is associated with higher R2s, indicating less revelation of firm-specific information. Moreover, opaque firms are more prone to stock price crashes, consistent with the prediction of the Jin and Myers [2006. R2 around the world: new theory and new tests. Journal of Financial Economics 79, 257–292] model. However, ...

Abstract Cryptosporidium and Giardia are common causes of waterborne disease. The currently used methods of detecting these organisms in water rely on filtration capture, immunofluorescence labelling, and epifluorescence microscopy. These methods are inefficient, labour intensive, and require a highly skilled microscopist. We describe an alternative technique using flocculation concentration, followed by flow cytometry with fluorescence activated cell sorting. Environmental samples were analysed, ...

The level of recC gene expression has been analysed using Mud.(bla lac) fusions to the recC promoter. The constitutive level of expression is very low and remains so even under SOS inducing conditions. The recC gene product has been amplified by harnessing the gene to the phage lambda leftward promoter in a plasmid. From cells harbouring this plasmid, RecC protein, which represented approximately 6% of the total cellular protein, was purified to eleotrophoretic homogeneity.

Adrian C. Hutton, Alan C. Cook,

Reflectance data for vitrinite occurring in torbanites indicate that the mean maximum reflectance and the range of reflectance values are significantly lowered by the presence of alginite. This is the probable cause of apparently anomalous rank gradients in some deep oil exploration wells. Intermaceral effects need to be considered in assessing rank or maturity from vitrinite reflectance, and by inference, in most other methods. The interpretation of the cause of the effect is open to further study ...

V.R.S. Hutton, Alan G. Jones,

A two-dimensional array of 20 Gough-Reitzel magnetometers was operated over S. Scotland in 1973 and in 1974-5 magnetotelluric and magnetovariational observations in the period range 10-10, 000s were made in the same region. In this paper, the analyses of the magnetic data from both studies are presented in the form of induction vectors and hypothetical event contours. They suggest that the lateral variations in electrical conductivity structure associated with the Eskdalemuir anomaly are more complex ...

Integrated management (IM) has been widely proposed, but difficult to achieve in practice, and there remains the need for evaluation of examples that illustrate the practical issues that contribute to IM success or failure. This paper synthesises experiences of academics and practitioners involved in seven Australian case studies in which there have been attempts to integrate or take a broader, holistic perspective of management. The evaluative framework of Stephenson et al. (2019a) was used as a ...

Ruidong Xiang, Victor Hutton Oddy, Alan Archibald, Philip E. Vercoe, Brian P. Dalrymple,

Background. Ruminants are successful herbivorous mammals, in part due to their specialized forestomachs, the rumen complex, which facilitates the conversion of feed to soluble nutrients by micro-organisms. Is the rumen complex a modified stomach expressing new epithelial (cornification) and metabolic programs, or a specialised stratified epithelium that has acquired new metabolic activities, potentially similar to those of the colon? How has the presence of the rumen affected other sections of the ...
