The synthesis, structure-activity relationship (SAR), and evolution of a novel series of oxadiazole-containing 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) inhibitors are described. The use of structure-guided drug design techniques provided compounds that demonstrated excellent FLAP binding potency (IC50 < 10 nM) and potent inhibition of LTB4 synthesis in human whole blood (IC50 < 100 nM). Optimization of binding and functional potencies, as well as physicochemical properties resulted in the identification ...

Abstract The term phacomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) refers to the occurrence of vascular nevi with melanocytic or epidermal nevi. We report on monozygotic twins (MZTs) discordant for phacomatosis cesioflammea (PPV type II) providing evidence for the mechanism of twin spotting in the development of PPV. The affected twin had a nevus flammeus on the right arm and the right maxilla, and a pigmented area on the trunk in keeping with a persistent, aberrant Mongolian spot. The affected twin had bilateral ...

Alan G. Hull,

Abstract Abstract Excavations for drainage of Ahuriri Lagoon near Poraiti has exposed a sequence, up to 8 m thick, of peat containing remains of two separate human skeletons, overlying primary airfall Waimihia Lapilli, and overlain by estuarine sediments. Stratigraphy together with radiocarbon dating of peat, wood, human bone, and shell samples is interpreted to indicate tectonic subsidence of 8 m in the last 3500 years at the pre-A.D. 1931 western margin of Ahuriri Lagoon. Most of this subsidence ...

Summary The hormone auxin is transported in plants through the combined actions of diffusion and specific auxin influx and efflux carriers. In contrast to auxin efflux, for which there are well documented inhibitors, understanding the developmental roles of carrier‐mediated auxin influx has been hampered by the absence of specific competitive inhibitors. However, several molecules that inhibit auxin influx in cultured cells have been described recently. The physiological effects of two of these ...

Alan Walker,

The first Proconsul fossil was found in 1927, but it was not until 1942 that Louis Leakey was able to devote much time to studying the Miocene. An enormous wealth of plant and animal fossils was found by the British Kenya Miocene Expeditions between 1947–1950. Accounts of the fauna were published by the British Museum in a new series of monographs. The first, by Sir Wilfrid LeGros Clark and Louis Leakey (1951), was devoted to the hominoids and included an account of the famous 1948 skull. Not much ...

Impulsivity critically relates to many psychiatric disorders. Given the multifaceted construct that impulsivity represents, defining core aspects of impulsivity is vital for the assessment and understanding of clinical conditions. Choice impulsivity (CI), involving the preferential selection of smaller sooner rewards over larger later rewards, represents one important type of impulsivity. The International Society for Research on Impulsivity (InSRI) convened to discuss the definition and assessment ...

Conventional genetic testing of individuals with neurodevelopmental presentations and congenital anomalies (ND/CAs), i.e., the analysis of sequence and copy number variants, leaves a substantial proportion of them unexplained. Some of these cases have been shown to result from DNA methylation defects at a single locus (epi-variants), while others can exhibit syndrome-specific DNA methylation changes across multiple loci (epi-signatures). Here, we investigate the clinical diagnostic utility of genome- ...

Alan A. Monkewicz,

Using a modified Hubbard low-pressure acoustic interferometer, the velocity dispersion of methane-water-vapor mixtures was measured as a function of (f/p). The napier time of the mixture was determined from these measurements. From this it was possible to obtain values of the napier time of the mixtures as a function of the mole percent of water vapor present. These values show a nonlinear dependence on the percent mole fraction. The results were subjected to an analysis similar to that of Tuesday ...

Lead exposure is toxic even at low levels, resulting in impairments that can affect a child's lifelong success. In North Carolina, testing for lead is encouraged for all children at ages 1 and 2 years and required for children covered by Medicaid; investigations are performed to identify potential exposure sources for children with blood lead levels (BLLs) ≥5 μg/dL.During June-August 2023, routine lead testing identified four asymptomatic North Carolina children with BLLs ≥5 μg/dL.Home investigations ...

Persistent programming is concerned with the construction of large and long lived systems of data. In designing and building persistent object systems, we are attempting to regularise the activities that are performed on data by programming languages, operating systems, database management systems and file systems. We have identified the following areas of research which we are investigating in the context of persistent systems. They are: controlling complexity, protection of data, orthogonal persistence, ...
