Altered levels of cytokines and chemokines may play a role in cancer- and cancer treatment-related cognitive difficulties. In many neurodegenerative diseases, abnormal concentrations of cytokines and chemokines affect neuronal integrity leading to cognitive impairments, but the role of cytokines in chemotherapy-related cognitive difficulties in cancer patients is not well understood. Patients receiving doxorubicin-based (with cyclophosphamide, or cyclophosphamide plus fluorouracil; AC/CAF) chemotherapy ...

The leading region of a plasmid is the first sector to enter the recipient cell in bacterial conjugation. This sector of IncI1 plasmid ColIb-P9 includes genes that are transcribed in a transient pulse early in the conjugatively infected cell to promote establishment of the immigrant plasmid. Evidence is presented that the burst of gene expression is regulated by a process which is independent of a repressor but dependent on the orientation of the genes on the unique plasmid strand transferred in ...

The CD34+ cell fraction of bone marrow and blood contains the hematopoietic stem cells required for marrow reconstitution following myeloablative therapy. Because they are present in small numbers, accurate quantification is often difficult. We have developed a reproducible and sensitive flow cytometric method for CD34+ enumeration of both bone marrow harvests and peripheral blood stem cell collections. The total numbers of harvested cells are enumerated by particle counting. A measured aliquot ...

The need to assess pilot workload during flight has become of increasing importance over the past decade—both in combat aircraft where workload can be excessive, and in civil transport aircraft where underload may occur. Subjective reporting in some form has been the long and well established method for assessing workload in the 'real world', but because subjective opinions are vulnerable to bias and to preconceived notions, an additional measure can be of considerable value on occasions. The application of heart rate and respiratory measures to the human factors of flight is discussed. The concept of pilot workload is related to the concept of arousal and distinguished from physical workload. Finds from studies of pilot workload using heart rate measures are reviewed for flight, simulated flight and related real-life challenges. Measurement techniques and transducers are discussed from the perspective of field measurement. Recommended procedures are presented as are directions for ...

Several studies have highlighted the increase in physiological activity which occurs in pilots during flight and especially during takeoffs and landings. For example, it has been clearly demonstrated that pilots' heart rates increase during the landing approach to reach a peak at or just before touchdown. These changes have been attributed to workload and to psychological or emotional stress. This paper examines a number of test pilots' heart rate responses recorded during various flight trials ...

Human umbilical cord blood (CB) is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells for both research and stem cell transplantation. In clinical studies, it appears that recovery from myeloablative therapy using CB requires significantly fewer cells than a typical allogeneic marrow transplant. This suggests that CB may be enriched for early hematopoietic progenitors. The present studies were undertaken to determine the presence of CD34+ cells in CB with the phenotypic characteristics of multipotential stem ...

Arylsulfatase A and B have been demonstrated in preparations of human leukocytes. The level of activity of arylsulfatase A is markedly decreased in the preparations from patients with metachromatic leukodystrophy. Acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase B activities were normal. The assay of arylsulfatase A in leukocyte preparations can be useful in the diagnosis of metachromatic leukodystrophy while obviating the difficulties of current methods.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a common surgical procedure with over 19 000 cases carried out in the UK in 2006/07. Persistent chest wall pain following cardiac surgery was termed Post-CABG Pain Syndrome (PCPS) in 1989 [1]. It has a reported incidence of up to 56% and is recognised as an important postoperative complication [2]. Currently PCPS is not considered in our patients' consent procedure. Long-term sequelae of COVID-19 are unknown, but evidence from previous CoV outbreaks demonstrates impaired pulmonary and physical function, reduced quality of life and emotional distress. Many ...
