A new, hot cathode, three electrode vacuum tube, the dynatron, is described. A constant, positive voltage is applied between the hot cathode and the perforated rugged anode. A supplementary anode is placed beyond the main anode, and is maintained at a lower positive potential than the main anode. Because of secondary electronic emission from the supplementary anode, thru a certain range of applied voltages, the supplementary anode-to-filament circuit acts as a true negative resistance. Consequently ...

When a narrow beam of X-rays passes through a fine powder of any crystalline material, it produces on a photographic plate placed just behind the powder a pattern of concentric circles. These circles are produced by the reflection of the X-rays from the planes of atoms in the crystal, and their diameters are a measure of the distances between these planes of atoms. By measuring the diameters of the circles the exact positions of the atoms can be determined. The results of this analysis are given ...

I ^HE following is a report of experiments on the reflection by a rough -*• copper surface-electrons having velocities from 0.4 volt to 50 volts. The copper was originally polished, but when taken out at the end of the experiment had a dull, smooth gray appearance, due probably to a deposit on it of copper distilled from hotter parts of the apparatus during the prolonged heating. This condition of the surface is to be especially borne in mind in interpreting the results. The most striking result of the ...

Equations of motion for electrons are developed starting from a cylindrical cathode and moving toward a co-axial cylindrical anode, in a uniform magnetic field parallel to the common axis. The electrons will reach the anode if the ratio of potential difference to magnetic field is greater than a critical value, and will fail to reach it if the ratio is less than this value. In the case of a small cathode in the axis of an anode of radius $R$ at potential $V$, the critical magnetic field is $H=\sqrt{\ ...

Crystal Structure of Calcium.---The X-ray pattern obtained with powdered calcium shows that the atoms are arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice. The side of the elementary cube is 5.56 \AA{}. The Ca atoms in Ca have therefore the same arrangement as in CaO and Ca${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$; but in the fluoride and oxide the atoms are respectively 2 and 14 per cent. closer together than without the fluorine and oxygen.

In presenting to you this youngest member of the electron tube family, I am both aided and embarrassed by its family history. I am aided by the fact that you are already acquainted with electrons, so that I need waste no time in explanation or argument regarding their existence. You believe in these little cannon balls which jump out of the hot filament, fly across the vacuum, and plunge into the anode. You have seen them heat the tungsten anode of an X-ray tube to its melting-point in a fraction ...

Graphic Method for Interpreting X-Ray Patterns of Powders.---For each type of lattice the logarithms of the theoretical spacings of the different planes are plotted as functions of the axial ratio. Six such plots are reproduced, three for the hexagonal and three for the tetragonal system. By plotting the logarithms of the observed spacings on the edge of a strip of paper, this may be fitted by trial to the theoretical plot; the axial ratio and type of lattice being thus found in a few minutes.Crystal ...

The energetics of annealing twins in pure aluminium were investigated by thin film transmission electron microscopy techniques. Coherent {111} twin boundaries were rigorously analyzed, and found to have a frequency of less than 10−3/grain as compared with approximately 1–10/grain for other f.c.c. metals and alloys at 0.8Tm. The formation of grain-corner twins was observed for the first time, indicating that corner twin formation is energetically favorable in pure aluminium. While twin bands (two parallel ...
