The Swampland Distance Conjecture (SDC) states that, as we move towards an infinite distance point in moduli space, a tower of states becomes exponentially light with the geodesic distance in any consistent theory of Quantum Gravity. Although this fact has been tested in large sets of examples, it is fair to say that a bottom-up justification that explains both the geodesic requirement and the exponential behavior has been missing so far. In the present paper we address this issue by making use of ...

Quantum gravitational effects become significant at a cutoff that can be much lower than the Planck scale whenever there is a large number of light fields. This is expected to occur at any perturbative limit of an effective field theory coupled to gravity, or equivalently, at infinite distance in the field space of the UV completion. In this note, we present a universal pattern that links the asymptotic variation in field space of the quantum gravity cutoff Λ_{sp} and the characteristic mass of ...

A bstract Infinite distance limits in the moduli space of a quantum gravity theory are characterized by having infinite towers of states becoming light, as dictated by the Distance Conjecture in the Swampland program. These towers imply a drastic breakdown in the perturbative regimes of the effective field theory at a quantum gravity cut-off scale known as the species scale. In this work, we find a universal pattern satisfied in all known infinite distance limits of string theory compactifications, ...

Sharing healthcare data is increasingly essential for developing data-driven improvements in patient care at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, it is also very challenging under the strict privacy legislation of the European Union (EU). Therefore, we explored four successful open ICU healthcare databases to determine how open healthcare data can be shared appropriately in the EU. A questionnaire was constructed based on the Delphi method. Then, follow-up questions were discussed with experts ...

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the possible association between Covid-19 infection and subacute thyroiditis. Methods We reviewed the medical and imaging records of patients referred to our Department’s outpatient setting dedicated to ‘thyroid emergency’ (records with a ‘ bollino verde ’—green sticker, classifed as urgent) from April 2020 to October 2020. This outpatient clinic is devoted to patients requiring evaluation for severe hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis and neck discomfort or pain. All patients ...

To date, there is no standard treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness and safety of 8% pirfenidone gel in patients with localized scleroderma. This was an open phase II clinical trial that included 12 patients. Treatment with pirfenidone was indicated, three times daily for 6 months. Patients were evaluated ...

Background: Sustained vascular smooth muscle contraction is mediated by extracellular Ca 2+ influx through L-type voltage-gated Ca 2+ channels (VGCC) and RhoA/Rho-associated kinase (ROCK)-dependent Ca 2+ sensitization of the contractile machinery. VGCC activation can also trigger an ion-independent metabotropic pathway that involves G-protein/phospholipase C activation, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate synthesis, and Ca 2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (calcium channel-induced Ca 2+ release). ...

To investigate the tumor fraction with cancer stem/tumor initiating cell (CSC/TIC) characteristics, we tested the human cervical carcinoma cell lines A431, Caski and SiHa, by growth as non-adherent spheres in specific media and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymatic activity. A431 parental cells already displayed characteristics ...

Recent evidence demonstrated that dopamine within the nucleus accumbens mediates consolidation of both associative and nonassociative memories. However, the specific contribution of the nucleus accumbens subregions, core and shell, and of D1 and D2 receptors subtypes has not been yet clarified. The aim of this study was, therefore, to directly compare the effect of D1 and D2 dopamine receptor blockade within the core and the shell subregions of the nucleus accumbens on memory consolidation. Vanin-1 is an epithelial ectoenzyme with pantetheinase activity and generating the amino-thiol cysteamine through the metabolism of pantothenic acid (vitamin B(5)). Here we show that Vanin-1(-/-) mice, which lack cysteamine in tissues, exhibit resistance to oxidative injury induced by whole-body gamma-irradiation or paraquat. This protection is correlated with reduced apoptosis and inflammation and is reversed by treating mutant animals with cystamine. The better tolerance of the Vanin-1(-/-) mice ...

Abstract In this paper we investigate the influence of different boundary conditions on the final breakdown of a lattice model for the fracture of heterogeneous media. Experimental evidence shows that disordered media subject to stress display some features that are characteristic of critical systems, therefore suggesting an interpretation of the global breakdown of the system as a kind of critical transition. Many of the observed features are well reproduced at least at a qualitative level by lattice ...

It has been recently noticed that heterogeneous media undergoing a fracturing process display a set of properties characteristic of systems at the critical state. In the present work we focus on the way in which the critical regime is reached. It is possible to define a branching ratio, for the breaking processses in the material, that represents the probability to trigger future breakdowns given an initial failure. This probability takes the value 1 when the system is critical thereby representing ...

Alternating Wenckebach periods (AWPs) are episodes of 2:1 block during which the PR, AH, or AV intervals of the conducted beats gradually increase until a greater degree of block ensues. Most episodes occur at the AV node, but some have also been reported in other structures. AWPs are usually attributed to multilevel block due to transverse (horizontal) dissociation. This assumption was initially based on a method in which the solutions to difficult electrocardiographic rhythms were arrived at by ...

The effects of early undernutrition were studied by rearing mice in small, intermediate or large litters (respectively 4, 8 or 16 pups).
