Leaves from six important olive cultivars grown under the same agronomic conditions were collected at four different times from June to December and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-TOF-MS). Twenty-eight phenolic compounds were identified and quantified. No qualitative differences were detected among leaves. However, for all cultivars, total concentrations of phenolic compounds decreased from June to August, then increased ...

In the present study, olive fruits from six cultivars grown under similar agronomical and environmental conditions were collected at four different times during fruit ripening. Some agronomical traits were determined, and general increases in the size of the fruit and oil contents were recorded for all cultivars. The phenolic fraction in fruits was also identified and quantified during the same period using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry. ...

Phenolic compounds are responsible of the nutritional and sensory quality of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). The composition of phenolic compounds in EVOO is related to the initial content of phenolic compounds in the olive-fruit tissues and the activity of enzymes acting on these compounds during the industrial process to produce the oil. In this work, the phenolic composition was studied in six major cultivars grown in the same orchard under the same agronomical and environmental conditions in an ...

'Sikitita' is a new olive cultivar developed in Spain by crossing the cultivars 'Picual' and 'Arbequina'. The phenolic fraction of olive leaves (Olea europaea L.), is purported to have good anti-oxidative properties which help to prevent several health problems. To our knowledge, no studies are available on the phenolic fraction of 'Sikitita' olive leaves or any other new cultivar developed from breeding. Thus, the identification and quantification of the phenolic fraction of 'Sikitita' olive leaves ...

Questionnaires can provide unique information regarding the status of a condition from the perspective of the patient. Contact lens (CL) discomfort (CLD) is a condition subjectively reported by CL users; thus, updated and reliable questionnaires are needed. The objective of this study was to design a new questionnaire for identifying CLD, based on the currently established CLD definition considered in the Tear Film and Ocular Surface CLD Workshop.A survey to characterise CL wearers was created and ...

The high risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes mellitus, particularly in those with nephropathy, is not completely explained by classical risk factors. A high plasma homocysteine concentration is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease but information on its association with diabetes is limited. Fasting homocysteine concentrations were measured in the plasma of 165 diabetic patients (75 with insulin-dependent [IDDM]; 90 with non-insulin-dependent diabetes [NIDDM]) and ...

We conducted a prospective study that included non-small-cell lung cancer patients staged as N0/N1 by endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial ...

Abstract. In the western Mediterranean Sea, the RADMED monitoring programme is already conducting several of the evaluations required under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MFSD) along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The different aspects of the ecosystem that are regularly sampled under this monitoring programme are the physical environment and the chemical and biological variables of the water column, together with the planktonic communities, biomass and structure. This paper presents a portable optimization for MPI communications, called PRAcTICaL-MPI (Portable Adaptive Compression Library- MPI). PRAcTICaL-MPI reduces the data volume exchanged among processes by using lossless compression and offers two main advantages. Firstly, it is independent of the MPI implementation and the application used. Secondly, it allows for turning the compression on and off and selecting the most appropriate compression algorithm at run-time, depending on the characteristics ...

Some of these sources only affect human beings. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of lead and cadmium in bone samples of 16 prehispanic inhabitants of Gran Canaria, 24 prehispanic domestic animals (sheep, goat and pigs) from this island, 8 modern individuals, and 13 modern domestic animals. Previous findings indicate that reducing brain insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR) activity promotes ample neuroprotection. We now examined a possible action of IGF-IR on brain glucose transport to explain its wide protective activity, as energy availability is crucial for healthy tissue function. Using (18) FGlucose PET we found that shRNA interference of IGF-IR in mouse somatosensory cortex significantly increased glucose uptake upon sensory stimulation. Significance Coexposure to airborne pollen enhances susceptibility to respiratory viral infections, regardless of the allergy status. We hypothesized this could be also true for SARS-CoV-2 infections. To investigate this, we tested for relationships between SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and pollen concentrations, along with humidity, temperature, population density, and lockdown effects. Our unique dataset derives from 130 sites in 31 countries and across five continents. We found that pollen, sometimes ...

The SRY gene is a single-copy, male-specific gene, located on the Y chromosome in most mammals. However, recently we have described the presence of multiple polymorphic copies of this gene in both males and females of the vole species Microtus cabrerae. Here, we present the chromosomal localization of SRY gene copies in this species by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). This technique localized these gene copies in the short arm, and hence in the euchromatic region, of the Y chromosome. Furthermore, ...
