Summary Plants that express resistance to herbivores emit volatile organic compounds ( VOC s) that can trigger resistance responses in undamaged neighbours. Recent reports indicate that VOC s can also trigger the resistance to pathogens, an effect that might be due to different mechanisms: the priming of an induced expression of resistance genes in the receiver or direct inhibitory effects on microbial pathogens that cause a passive ‘associational’ resistance in the VOC ‐exposed plant. We investigated ...

Food and waterborne illnesses are still a major concern in health and food safety areas. Every year, almost 0.42 million and 2.2 million deaths related to food and waterborne illness are reported worldwide, respectively. In foodborne pathogens, bacteria such as Salmonella, Shiga-toxin producer Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, and Listeria monocytogenes are considered to be high-concern pathogens. High-concern waterborne pathogens are Vibrio cholerae, leptospirosis, Schistosoma mansoni, and Schistosima ...

Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a leguminous in high demand for human nutrition and a very important agricultural product. Production of common bean is constrained by environmental stresses such as drought. Although conventional plant selection has been used to increase production yield and stress tolerance, drought tolerance selection based on phenotype is complicated by associated physiological, anatomical, cellular, biochemical and molecular changes. These changes are modulated by differential ...

An organogenic regeneration protocol in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) using embryo-axes derived from mature seeds from commercial cultivars Flor de Junio Marcela (FJM) and Flor de Mayo Anita (FMA) is reported. Embryonic axes were excised from surface sterilized seeds and established in MS medium containing different benzylaminopurine (BAP) and adenine (A) concentrations. Efficient regeneration was achieved when 5 or 10 mg/l BAP was added to the medium regardless of the A concentration, inducing ...

Macrophomina phaseolina infects a wide range of plant species. In the case of Phaseolus vulgaris(the common bean), the fungus causes charcoal rot which can lead to severe losses especially under arid conditions. In order to combat the disease, it is necessary to have information on the population structure of the pathogen in terms of pathogenesis on different species which may be grown simultaneously or successively within a region. Previous reports have demonstrated the heterogeneity of the pathogen ...

BackgroundTyphoid fever is endemic in many parts of the world. In the United States, nearly three quarters of all cases are contracted by persons who traveled to regions with endemic disease. Typhim Vi, a vaccine containing the purified cell surface Vi polysaccharide of the Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, was developed to provide protection against typhoid fever. We present the results of the largest safety study of this Vi vaccine to date.

Palladium allylic systems containing modular chiral dithioether ligands were chosen as catalysts for a systematic study of homodonor ligands in allylic alkylation reactions. For this purpose, new type-DMPS (4−6) and -DEGUS (8, 9) ligands were synthesized. Dithioethers 4−6 afforded high activities and excellent selectivities in all Pd-catalyzed allylic reactions. Particularly the Pd/6 catalytic system provided b-VIII with an ee > 99% and a regioselectivity l/b (VIII) = 1/1.6. A family of intermediate complexes ...

This paper applies different analytical frameworks to explore processes of family bargaining about providing care for dependent older people in Mexico and Peru. These frameworks include cultural norms, life course effects and material exchange. The paper is based on 19 in-depth qualitative family case studies, which are linked to a wider set of quantitative survey data. Care arrangements and bargaining processes are revealed to be highly gendered, and largely conform to prevailing cultural norms. ...
