Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) affects approximately a third of hospitalized patients and is associated with an increased risk of morbimortality. However, DRM is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Our aim is to evaluate the prognostic value of morphofunctional tools and tests for nutritional assessment in clinical practice. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify studies relating to the morphofunctional assessment of nutritional status and mortality or complications. Evidence ...

Today, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and skeletal muscle atrophy (SMA) have become increasingly common occurrences. Whether the onset of T2DM increases the risk of SMA or vice versa has long been under investigation. Both conditions are associated with negative changes in skeletal muscle health, which can, in turn, lead to impaired physical function, a lowered quality of life, and an increased risk of mortality. Poor nutrition can exacerbate both T2DM and SMA. T2DM and SMA are linked by a vicious ...

Malnutrition has been related to prolonged hospital stays, and to increases in readmission and mortality rates. In the NOURISH (Nutrition effect On Unplanned Readmissions and Survival in Hospitalized patients) study, administering a high protein oral nutritional supplement (ONS) containing beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HP-HMB) to hospitalised older adult patients led to a significant improvement in survival compared with a placebo treatment. The aim of this study was to determine whether HP-HMB ...

Background and aims The case-mix of patients with intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF) can differ among centres and may also be affected by the timeframe of data collection. Therefore, the ESPEN international multicenter cross-sectional survey was analyzed to compare the characteristics of SBS-IF cohorts collected within the same timeframe in different countries. Methods The study included 1880 adult SBS-IF patients collected in 2015 by 65 centres from 22 countries. The demographic, ...

Abstract Objectives To assess the effectiveness and tolerability of dolutegravir (DTG)/lamivudine (3TC) among treatment-naive and virologically suppressed treatment-experienced individuals in the multicentre cohort of the Spanish HIV/AIDS Research Network (CoRIS) during the years 2018–2021. Methods We used multivariable regression models to compare viral suppression (VS) [HIV RNA viral load (VL) <50 copies/mL] and the change in CD4 cell counts at 24 and 48 (±12) weeks after initiation with dolutegravir/ ...

Carpal canal pressures were measured in 103 patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, before and after open release, with a postoperative follow-up of 1 year. Twenty-five normal subjects were used as controls. Pressures were measured with the wrists in three positions: neutral, full passive flexion and full passive extension. At each wrist position, the mean pre-operative pressures in the study group were significantly higher than in the control group. In both groups, the pressures were maximal ...

The efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis for the release of different biocompounds such as total phenolic compounds (TPC), sugars and proteins from the industrial solid residue of G. sesquipedale after agar extraction has been evaluated. Cellulase (0.25–8%, w/w, enzyme: solid residue, pH = 5) has been proved to be an efficient enzyme to degrade the algae cell wall improving the release of the bound TPC with values up to 7.5 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry macroalgae residue. BCS (Body Condition Score) is a method to estimate body fat reserves and accumulated energy balance of cows, placing estimations (or BCS values) in a scale of 1 to 5. Periodically rating BCS of dairy cows is very important since BCS values are associated with milk production, reproduction, and health of cows. However, in practice, obtaining BCS values is a time-consuming and subjective task performed visually by expert scorers. There have been several efforts to automate BCS of dairy cows by using ...

BCS ("Body Condition Score") is a method used to estimate body fat reserves and accumulated energy balance of cows. BCS heavily influences milk production, reproduction, and health of cows. Therefore, it is important to monitor BCS to achieve better animal response, but this is a time-consuming and subjective task performed visually by expert scorers. Several studies have tried to automate BCS of dairy cows by applying image analysis and machine learning techniques. This work analyzes these studies ...

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) such as poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) have attracted significant interest for the development of flexible light-emitting diodes, electrochromic devices and solar cells, as well as for a variety of biosensing and regenerative medicine applications. Herein, we disclose the use of water-soluble self-folded metal-containing single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) as robust enzyme-mimic nanoreactors for the synthesis of ICPs via step-growth polymerization. ...

Significance Angiogenesis, the development of blood vessels within a solid tumor, is not only essential for primary tumor growth but also vital for tumor invasion and metastasis. The TP73 gene, a p53-family gene, encodes for both a tumor suppressor, TAp73, and an oncogene, ΔNp73. Here we report that TAp73 and ΔNp73 have opposing roles in tumor angiogenesis. Loss of TAp73 or upregulation of ΔNp73 leads to highly vascularized tumors and is found to correlate with increased angiogenesis in patients ...

Plants have developed versatile strategies to deal with the great variety of challenging conditions they are exposed to. Among them, the regulation of translation is a common target to finely modulate gene expression both under biotic and abiotic stress situations. Upon environmental challenges, translation is regulated to reduce the consumption of energy and to selectively synthesize proteins involved in the proper establishment of the tolerance response. In the case of viral infections, the situation ...

Chemoenzymatic strategies for the preparation of enantiopure β-hydroxytriazoles were designed. These and other related compounds are particularly relevant because of their antitubercular bioactivities and as β-adrenergic receptor blockers. The ability of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa LSL to stereoselectively reduce prochiral ketones coupled to copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition was exploited. The reactions were performed in aqueous medium and at room temperature. R. mucilaginosa LSL offered ...
