A biosensor was developed for spectrophotometric determination of glucose concentrations in real samples of orange juice energetic drinks, and sport drinks. The biosensor consisted of glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) immobilized onto polyaniline activated with glutaraldehyde (PANIG). Immobilization parameters were optimized for GOD, and maximum immobilization yield was 16% when 5.0 mg of PANIG and 8.9 U prepared in 0.1 mol.L-1 sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) reacted for 60 minutes ...

In this work a polyphenol oxidase (PPO) from Solanum lycocarpum ripe and unripe fruits was studied. The unripe fruits presented higher activity than ripe for both fresh fruits and dried pulp flours. The purification procedure was based on freezing precipitation and a sixfold purification factor was obtained. The SDS-PAGE of the partially purified PPO showed two bands around 47 and 68 kDa. Optimal conditions for enzymatic studies were determined to be pH 6.0–6.5 and 28 °C. The partially purified PPO ...

Mangroves are sensitive ecosystems of prominent ecological value that lamentably have lost much of their areas across the world. The vulnerability of mangroves grown in proximity to cities requires the development of new technologies for the remediation of acute oil spills and chronic contaminations. Studies on oil remediation are usually performed with in vitro microcosms whereas in situ experiments are rare. The aim of this work was to evaluate oil degradation on mangrove ecosystems using in situ ...

The biochemical and functional properties of 2 hard-to-cook common bean cultivars (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) were investigated after the extrusion process. Beans of BRS pontal and BRS grafite cultivars were milled and extruded at 150 degrees C, with a compression ratio screw of 3 : 1, 5-mm die, and screw speed of 150 rpm. Extrudate flours were evaluated for water solubility (WS), water absorption index (WAI), oil absorption capacity (OAC), foaming capacity (FC), emulsifying activity (EA), antinutritional ...

Summary Changes in the biochemical and functional properties of the hard‐to‐cook cowpea bean after treatment by the extrusion process are reported. The extrusion was carried out at 150 °C, with a compression ratio screw of 3:1, a 5‐mm die, and a screw speed of 150 r.p.m. The extrusion caused the complete inactivation of the α‐amylase and lectin and it also reduced the trypsin inhibitor activity (38.2%) and phytic acid content (33.2%). The functional properties were also modified by the process, an ...

In this work Solanum lycocarpum fruits were used as a source of pectin. The parameters of pectin extraction were examined using a 23 factorial design, with temperature, pH and extraction time as independent variables. The extracted S. lycocarpum pectin and dried pulp were analyzed for the presence of antinutritional compounds, such as amylase and trypsin inhibitors, hemagglutinin, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and phytate. Pectin was characterized by measuring its methoxylation degree, intrinsic ...

The use of cell wall degrading enzymes from Trichoderma asperellum immobilized on biodegradable support is an alternative for food packaging. In this study, hydrolytic enzymes produced by T. asperellum were tested as a fungal growth inhibitor, in free form or immobilized on a biodegradable film composed of cassava starch and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephtalate) (PBAT). The inhibitory activity was tested against Aspergillus niger , Penicillium sp., and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , microorganisms that ...

In this study, chitinolytic enzymes produced by Trichoderma asperellum were immobilized on a biodegradable film manufactured with a blend of cashew gum polysaccharide (CGP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and tested as a fungal growth inhibitor. The film was produced by casting a blend of CGP and PVA solution on glass molds. The CGP/PVA film showed 68% water solubility, tensile strength of 23.7 MPa, 187.2% elongation and 52% of mass loss after 90 days in soil. The presence of T-CWD enzymes immobilized ...

Summary Response surface methodology was used to investigate the effects of extrusion conditions – namely moisture content (12.3–23.7 g 100 g −1 ) and temperature (150–178 °C) – on physicochemical, antinutritional compounds, functional and pasting properties of extruded bean cotyledons. Results indicated that extrusion cooking did not change the chemical composition of bean flours, but completely eliminated the activity of the trypsin and α‐amylase inhibitors and haemagglutinins. The extrusion significantly ...

This study was conducted to evaluate the rheological and physicochemical properties of Solanum lycocarpum starch. The thermogravimetric analysis of S. lycocarpum starch showed a typical three-step weight loss pattern. Microscopy revealed significant changes in the granule morphology after hydrothermal treatment. Samples hydrothermally treated at 50 °C for 10 min lost 52% of their crystallinity, which was recovered after storage for 7 days at 4 °C. However, samples hydrothermally treated at 65 °C were ...

Blends of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and angico gum (AG) and/or cashew gum (CG) were used to produce films by casting method. Morphological and mechanical properties of these films were studied and compared to the properties of a commercial collagen membrane of bovine origin (MBO). The films presented thickness varying from 70 to 140 μ m (PVA/AG) and 140 to 200 μ m (PVA/CG). Macroscopic analysis showed that a PVA/CG film was very similar to MBO regarding the color and transparency. The higher values of tensile ...

In this study the pulp from Solanum lycocarpum fruits was used as raw material for extraction of starch, resulting in a yield of 51%. The starch granules were heterogeneous in size, presenting a conical appearance, very similar to a high-amylose cassava starch. The elemental analysis (CHNS) revealed 64.33% carbon, 7.16% hydrogen and 0.80% nitrogen. FT-IR spectroscopy showed characteristic peaks of polysaccharides and NMR analysis confirmed the presence of the α-anomer of d-glucose. The S. lycocarpum ...

Cities in developing countries across Asia-Pacific are struggling to effectively manage municipal solid waste (MSW). This is especially the case in secondary cities and small towns, which often face a lack of resources and know-how. Because the waste stream in these cities is usually high in organic content (50–80%) and recyclable materials (10–20%), waste-to-resource initiatives are viable options for sustainable MSW management. Waste-to-resource initiatives that are low-cost, low-tech, decentralised ...
