In an ideal experimental setting, 2 randomized controlled trials recently showed the efficacy of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSEs) for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Now large observational studies are needed to check the generalizability of these results to everyday clinical life. To explore the effectiveness of PSSEs for avoiding bracing or progression of AIS in everyday clinics. This was a longitudinal comparative observational multicenter study, nested in a prospective ...

Abstract The engagement of CD8 on NK cell surface by either surface or soluble HLA class I (sHLA‐I) molecules induces synthesis and secretion of IFN‐γ. HLA‐I‐mediated effects were inhibited by the covering of CD8 with specific anti‐CD8 monoclonal antibodies, indicating a direct interaction of HLA‐I and CD8. That CD8 ligation induces IFN‐γ production was further supported by the finding that cross‐linking of CD8 led to release of IFN‐γ at similar levels to those obtained with HLA‐I. The sHLA‐I‐induced ...

Exercises are frequently performed in order to improve the efficacy of bracing and avoid its collateral effects. Very frequently there is a loss of correction during brace weaning in AIS treatment. To verify the efficacy of exercises in reducing correction loss during brace weaning.Retrospective controlled study.Sixty-eight consecutive patients (eight males), age 15 +/- 1 and Cobb angle 22 +/- 8 degrees at start of brace weaning. The start of brace weaning was defined as the first visit in which the wearing ...

SEAS is the acronym for "Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis", a name related to the continuous changes of the approach based on results published in the literature.SEAS is an individualized exercise program adapted to all situations of conservative treatment of scoliosis: stand-alone in low-medium degree curves during growth to reduce the risk of bracing; complimentary to bracing in medium-high degree curves during growth, with the aim to increase correction, prepare weaning, and avoid/reduce ...

Scoliosis fusion surgery is generally considered the only means to stop the progression of adult idiopathic scoliosis (ADIS), but for patients refusing surgery there is lack of evidence in favour of conservative treatment. The aim of the present study was to verify the possible effectiveness of scoliosis-specific exercises when facing ADIS progression. We designed a retrospective cohort study. We included 34 ADIS patients in treatment at our Institute (5 males and 29 females, mean age was 38.0 ± 11.0), ...

Two years ago we published an update of another of our previous systematic reviews about the effectiveness of physical exercises (PEs), and we found that the evidence on exercises for AIS was of level 1b. Now we have updated these results in the field of exercises for AIS with the final aim to find the strongest evidence as possible about PEs. Our goal was to verify if treatment with specific exercises for AIS has changed in these years. The study design was a systematic review. A bibliographic search ...

It has been known since many years that scoliosis can continue to progress after skeletal maturity: the rate of progression has shown to be linear, and it can be used to establish an individual prognosis. Once there is progression there is an indication for treatment: usually it is proposed a surgical one. There are very few papers on an alternative rehabilitation approach; since many years we propose specific SEAS exercises and the aim of this study is to present one case report on this approach. ...

Soluble HLA class I (sHLA-I) molecules can regulate survival of NK cells and their anti-tumor killing activity. Herein, we have analysed whether interaction of sHLA-I with CD8 and/or different isoforms of killer Ig-like receptors (KIR) induced secretion of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1. CD8+KIR- NK cell clones secreted TGF-beta1 upon the interaction of sHLA-I with CD8 molecule. sHLA-Cw4 or sHLA-Cw3 alleles engaging inhibitory isoforms of KIR, namely KIR2DL1 or KIR2DL2, strongly downregulated ...

The abnormal expression of several microRNAs has a causal role in tumorigenesis with either antineoplastic or oncogenic functions. Here we demonstrated that miR-126 and miR-126* play a tumor suppressor role in human melanoma through the direct or indirect repression of several key oncogenic molecules. The expression levels of miR-126&126* were elevated in normal melanocytes and primary melanoma cell lines, whereas they markedly declined in metastatic cells. Indeed, the restored expression of miR- ...

A number of methods are available to scan a genome for selection signatures by evaluating patterns of diversity within and between breeds. Among these, "extended haplotype homozygosity" (EHH) is a reliable approach to detect genome regions under recent selective pressure. The objective of this study was to use this approach to identify regions that are under recent positive selection and shared by the most representative Italian dairy and beef cattle breeds. A total of 3220 animals from Italian Holstein ( ...

Recent studies suggested that colorectal cancer influences the types and quantity of nucleic acids - especially microRNAs – detected in the bloodstream. Concentration of circulating (cell-free) microRNAs, and possibly of other non-coding RNAs, could therefore serve as valuable colorectal cancer biomarker and could deliver insight into the disease process. This chapter addresses the recent discoveries on circulating microRNA and long non-coding RNA as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers in colorectal ...

In this paper we developed a numerical methodology to study some incompressible fluid flows without free surface, using the curvilinear coordinate system and whose edge geometry is constructed via parametrized spline. First, we discussed the representation of the Navier-Stokes and continuity equations on the curvilinear coordinate system, along with the auxiliary conditions. Then, we presented the numerical method – a simplified version of MAC (Marker and Cell) method – along with the discretization ...
