Objectives: To use intravenous adenosine as a rescue therapy for neonatal refractory pulmonary hypertension in a low-weight premature infant. Study Line: We report the successful use of a continuous intravenous adenosine infusion in a 1150-g premature baby with severe persistent pulmonary hypertension, refractory to classic management with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, oxygen therapy and inhaled nitric oxide. Results: Adenosine infusion had a dramatic effect allowing for a rapid weaning ...

Abstract As an initial step in more extensive research into the links between biological and cultural diversity in present-day Italy, we reviewed Biocultural Diversity studies that explore the relationship between biological and cultural patterns of diversity to determine whether any direct causal relationships or common drivers could be inferred. We found no significant attempts to quantitatively measure biocultural diversity in the country as a whole. Italy shows a high number of mutual interactions, ...

Sixteen Parma hams were manufactured following regular standard procedures up to the 13th month of processing and then divided into two groups according to established levels of cathepsin B activity in fresh hams. Each group was selected in order to include the same number of hams with low or high cathepsin B activity. The two groups were further split to be kept for an additional month at two different temperatures (18 and 26 °C) and then analysed for proximate composition, free amino acids and oligopeptides ( ...

Transmissible stages of Toxoplasma gondii store energy in the form of the carbohydrate amylopectin. Here, we show that the Ca(2+)-dependent protein kinase CDPK2 is a critical regulator of amylopectin metabolism. Increased synthesis and loss of degradation of amylopectin in CDPK2 deficient parasites results in the hyperaccumulation of this sugar polymer. A carbohydrate-binding module 20 (CBM20) targets CDPK2 to amylopectin stores, while the EF-hands regulate CDPK2 kinase activity in response to Ca( ...

We investigated the relationship between ferromagnetism and metallicity in strained La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 films grown on lattice-mismatched NdGaO3 (001) by means of spectroscopic techniques directly sensitive to the ferromagnetic state, to the band structure, and to the chemical state of the atoms. In this system, the ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) phase spatially coexists with an insulating one in most of the phase diagram. First, the observation of an almost 100% spin polarization of the photoelectrons ...

Systems based on the combination of ferromagnetic (FM) thin films and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides are currently of high interest in the context of spintronic devices. Here, we report on the fabrication of MoS2/(Fe3O4, Fe) heterojunctions by using chemical-based methods. FM thin films have been initially synthesized on top of Si/SiO2 substrates by chemical vapour deposition. The 2D-MoS2 nanosheets have been grown on top of the FM layers by following the sulfurization of a ...

Apoptosis is a form of regulated cell death (RCD) that involves proteases of the caspase family. Pharmacological and genetic strategies that experimentally inhibit or delay apoptosis in mammalian systems have elucidated the key contribution of this process not only to (post-)embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis, but also to the etiology of multiple human disorders. Consistent with this notion, while defects in the molecular machinery for apoptotic cell death impair organismal development ...

The prediction of neurologic outcome in comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA) has been investigated and the findings were summarized in a practice parameter of the American Academy of Neurology (1). These guidelines did not include the EEG as a reliable outcome indicator but recent studies on continuous EEG recorded during TH have re-evaluated the role of EEG (2–4).
