The 1.5 μm fluorescence shape and lifetime of Er3 + -activated tellurite glasses have been investigated. The measures on bulk system have been compared with those obtained on powders, showing that the self-absorption effect broadens the emission spectrum and lengthens the lifetime. It has been demonstrated that the bandwidth and lifetime measurements depend on the absorption coefficient α(λ) and on the distance d between the focused exciting laser beam and the exit face of a bulk glass sample. The ...

70SiO2–30HfO2 mol% planar waveguides, doped with Er3+ with concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 2 mol% were prepared by sol–gel route, using dip-coating deposition on vitreous-SiO2 substrates. Infrared-to-visible upconversion emission, upon excitation at 980 nm, has been observed for all the samples. The upconversion results in green, red and blue emissions. The investigation of the upconversion dynamic as a function of the Er3+ concentration and excitation power, show that processes such as excited ...

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), known as Kennedy disease (KD), is a slowly progressive adult-onset X-linked neuromuscular disorder with no effective treatment. It is characterised by progressive limb and bulbar muscle weakness, associated with metabolic and endocrine alterations.1 2 SBMA is caused by the expansion of a CAG repeat in exon 1 of the androgen receptor ( AR ) gene; more than 37 repeats are pathogenic.1 While the genetic test is diagnostic, biomarkers would aid the initial differential ...

Timed Failure Propagation Graphs (TFPGs) are used in the design of safety-critical systems as a way of modeling failure propagation, and to evaluate and implement diagnostic systems. TFPGs are a very rich formalism: they allow to model Boolean combinations of faults and events, also dependent on the operational modes of the system and quantitative delays between them. TFPGs are often produced manually, from a given dynamic system of greater complexity, as abstract representations of the system behavior ...

Er3+-doped glasses have been a subject of great interest in the recent years for their application in the areas of guided wave optical amplifiers and lasers. Oxide–glass matrices, in particular, offer the advantage of relatively simple fabrication processes—both for bulk glasses and optical fibers—and have demonstrated quite good properties in the 1.5 μm wavelength band. Here we present some results we have obtained in the development of different silica-based glasses and in their application to ...
