To determine whether there is a relationship between the use of dental services and caries experience in adults and older adults from central Chile.A sample of 453 adults, 35-44 years of age, and 438 older adults, 65-74 years of age, was interviewed and examined using World Health Organisation (WHO) methods. Sociodemographic variables were also registered. Caries experience was assessed using the Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth (DMFT) index. Multiple linear regression models were used to determine ...

The covalent modification of protein substrates by ubiquitin regulates a diverse range of critical biological functions. Although it has been established that ubiquitin-like modifiers evolved from prokaryotic sulphur transfer proteins it is less clear how complex eukaryotic ubiquitylation system arose and diversified from these prokaryotic antecedents. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for existing dwellings has not been able to promote the renovation rate. The main reasons are associated with the low quality of the assessment and renovation recommendations provided. These are not able to provide the information or confidence needed to undertake a renovation project. So far, neither reports for the EPBD nor studies by researchers have proposed modifications to the model used to assess existing buildings under the EPBD. The present research ...

Abstract Tumour cell plasticity is a major barrier to the efficacy of targeted cancer therapies but the mechanisms that mediate it are poorly understood. Here, we identify dysregulated RNA splicing as a key driver of tumour cell dedifferentiation in colorectal cancer (CRC). We find that Apc -deficient CRC cells have dysregulated RNA splicing machinery and exhibit global rewiring of RNA splicing. We show that the splicing factor SRSF1 controls the plasticity of tumour cells by controlling Kras splicing ...

Considering the scarce research focusing on the recommendations list of measures, more information is needed in order to identify ...

Dwellings built between 1945 and 1980 have the largest energy demand in the EU, which by 2009 represented 70% of the final energy use in buildings. A great portion of these dwellings have not been retrofitted and most of them were not built with any energy efficiency measures, since most of the energy regulations were implemented after the oil crisis in the 70s. To face this issue several actions were taken in the EU, among these, the implementation of Energy Performance Certification, which includes ...

Abstract Retrofitting of existing buildings offers significant opportunities to reduce global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, it is considered as one of the main approaches to achieve sustainability in the built environment at a relatively low cost. Although there is a wide range of retrofitting technologies available, methods to identify the most cost-effective measures for each project remain a major technical challenge. Numerous projects have been developed worldwide to face ...

Energy simulation systems allow analyzing the environmental quality and demand of buildings, but they must have reliable and proper procedures. This paper identifies relevant conditions of energy simulation systems for the study of single-family homes, based on the analysis of a dozen programs and various experiences in south central Chile. A review of capabilities was conducted, simulating the same case in all systems and making interviews with expert users. Besides it studied the incidence of ...

This work proposes an automated workflow using digital twinning for multi-domain environmental performance analysis of urban developments. Digital twins can potentially provide a common basis for multi-domain simulations and help overcome data availability and interoperability issues. The proposed workflow consists of five steps: (1) creating a procedural urban 3D model, (2) generating design alternatives parametrically, (3) exporting the context and each design alternative to each simulation tool, ( ...

This work investigated the impact of an atmospheric pressure nitrogen plasma treatment on the surface homogeneity of a fluoropolymer film. The resulting surfaces were assessed using T-peel tests, surface energy measurements, and XPS analyses. The results showed that the treatment led to the defluorination of the fluoropolymer surface, therefore increasing its wettability. Consequently, the peel strength of the substrate drastically increased. This study also highlighted that surface energy alone ...

Two years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic no predictive algorithm has been generally adopted for clinical management and in most algorithms the contribution of laboratory variables is limited. To measure the predictive performance of currently used clinical laboratory tests alone or combined with clinical variables and explore the predictive power of immunological tests adequate for clinical laboratories. Methods: Data from 2,600 COVID-19 patients of the first wave of the pandemic in the ...

Granulins are a family of protein growth factors that are involved in cell proliferation. An orthologue of granulin from the human parasitic liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, known as Ov-GRN-1, induces angiogenesis and accelerates wound repair. Recombinant Ov-GRN-1 production is complex and poses an obstacle for clinical development. To identify the bioactive region(s) of Ov-GRN-1, four truncated N-terminal analogues were synthesized and characterized structurally using NMR spectroscopy. Peptides ...
