The channeling of microwave radiation is demonstrated experimentally in a double line in which a plasma filament produced in air by intense femtosecond laser pulses serves as one of the conductors. It is shown that during the propagation of microwave radiation in this line, ultrashort pulses are formed, their duration monotonically decreasing with increasing the propagation length (down to the value comparable with the microwave field period). These effects can be used for diagnostics of plasma in ...

Gliomas are invasive cancers that resist all forms of attempted therapy. Immunotherapy using Ag-pulsed dendritic cells has improved survival in some patients. We present evidence that another level of complexity may also contribute to lack of responses by the lymphocytes toward gliomas. Atomic force microscopy of four different glioma types-human U251 and rat T9 and F98 glioma cells, including freshly isolated human glioblastoma multiforme neurosphere cultures (containing "stem cell-like cells")-revealed ...

The yeast retrovirus-like element Ty3 GAG3 gene encodes a Gag3 polyprotein analogous to retroviral Gag. Gag3 lacks matrix, but contains capsid, spacer, and nucleocapsid domains. Expression of a Ty3 Gag3 or capsid domain optimized for expression in Escherichia coli was sufficient for Ty3 particle assembly. Virus-like ordered particles assembled from Gag3 were similar in size to immature particles from yeast and contained nucleic acid. However, particles assembled from the CA domain were variable ...

Blockchain technology has emerged as a revolutionary tool in ensuring data integrity and security in digital transactions. However, the current approaches to data verification in blockchain systems, particularly in Ethereum, face challenges in terms of efficiency and computational overhead. The traditional use of Merkle Trees and cryptographic hash functions, while effective, leads to significant resource consumption, especially for large datasets. This highlights a gap in existing research: the ...

Extraction was performed with 280 μl of butyl acetate added to 1.7 ml of the sample and placed into 2 ml gas chromatograph auto-injector vial. One microliter from the upper organic layer was analyzed. Natural constituents (i.e., phenylethyl alcohol, 4-hydroxybenzoate) found in beers and wines were profiled. Age markers for wines aged in contact with oak wood were studied. Artificial ...

Alex V. Kuznetsov,

We discuss two quantum effects that can influence the relaxation of carriers in a semiconductor excited by an ultrashort light pulse. Namely, the presence of nonzero interband optical polarization and the large energy uncertainty of carriers created by the short exciting pulse. The importance of both effects is investigated numerically for the case of electron--LO-phonon interaction assuming a model (exponential) pulse shape. Comparison of the results with the predictions based on the conventional ...

The use of an intense collimated beam of protons produced by a high-intensity laser pulse interacting with a plasma for the proton treatment of oncological diseases is discussed. The fast proton beam is produced at the target by direct laser acceleration. An appropriately designed double-layer target scheme is proposed in order to achieve high-quality proton beams. The generation of high quality proton beams is proved with particle in cell simulations.

Recent experimental observations of terahertz radiation produced by the ultrafast optical excitation of surface depletion layers of GaAs and InP have generated a lot of interest but its physical origins are still not fully understood. The source of the radiation is believed to be either the time-dependent transport current produced by the optically generated carriers in the depletion field, or the displacement current due to creation of polarized electron-hole pairs. We show that, in general, both ...

Coherent longitudinal-optical phonons are generated in semiconductor heterostructures. The coupling of the coherent, longitudinal-optic (LO) phonons to collective carrier excitations oscillating parallel to the growth direction of GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{0.36}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{0.64}$As quantum wells is investigated with femtosecond time-resolution. This coupling is found to be weak for small well widths and evolves towards the bulk plasmon phonon coupling at increased well widths. We present a theory ...

We study the very early processes of photogenerated carrier transport in GaAs and Si using THz nonlinear spectroscopy with 10 fs time resolution. This ultrahigh time resolution allows us to clearly separate the instantaneous creation of polarized electron-hole pairs and the subsequent carrier motion for the first time. In addition, our results give the first clear demonstration of the distinct phases of carrier transport; ballistic transport, electron velocity overshoot, and steady-state drift.

We present a microscopic theory of plasmon-phonon oscillations created by ultrafast optical excitation in polar semiconductors. Our analysis is based on the equations for the optical lattice displacement and the electronic polarization. For an idealized situation with homogeneous plasma density we find that plasmonlike oscillations dominate the transient behavior after the optical excitation. However, once the inhomogeneous density distribution is taken into account, only density-independent LO- ...

Nonlinear THz reflection by a superlattice is calculated using an effective dielectric function. Oscillations of the reflection coefficient with the electric field amplitude signifies dynamic electron localization. The nonlinear connection between the incident and internal fields leads to a reflection coefficient exhibiting hysteresis as a function of the incident field.

We present calculations of quantum control of wave packet motion and THz emission in an asymmetric double-quantum-well structure. A genetic algorithm is used to search for the laser pulse that best drives an electronic wave packet to a desired target, or goal. The targets considered in this work include maximizing the overlap of an electronic wave packet with a given distribution at a specific time, and maximizing the induced THz emission from the quantum well. We also show that, assuming a fixed ...

It has been recently recognized that in bulk semiconductors the displacement current caused by ultrafast optical generation of ``polarized pairs'' in the applied dc field is an important mechanism of charge transport in addition to the usual transport current. In quantum-well systems, this polarized pair creation is thought to be the only source of photocurrent at the early stages of photoexcitation since the bulklike transport current is inhibited by the barriers. In this work we perform a full quantum- ...

We present an analysis of several of the factors that contribute to experimentally measured pump-probe spectra. We point out that for a correct description of the carrier generation, a full quantum mechanical description is essential. In addition, we discuss the regimes where the quantum mechanical description based on the Bloch equations can be replaced by a simplified semiclassical approach. We also demonstrate that the detection of nonequilibrium carrier distributions with the probe pulse is ...
