Mass gathering events have been identified as high-risk environments for community transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Empirical estimates of their direct and spill-over effects however remain challenging to identify. In this study, we propose the use of a novel synthetic control framework to obtain causal estimates for direct and spill-over impacts of these events. The Sabah state elections in Malaysia were used as an example for our proposed methodology and we investigate the event’ ...

To identify how monetary incentives affect influenza vaccination uptake rate using a randomized control experiment and to subsequently design an optimal incentive program in Singapore, a high-income country with a market-based healthcare system.4000 people aged ≥65 were randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups (1000 each) and were offered a monetary incentive (in shopping vouchers) if they chose to participate. The baseline group was invited to complete a questionnaire with incentives of 10 Singapore ...

This paper shall review Metso Minerals’ current 3D Discrete Element Method (DEM) modeling techniques, developed to allow a detailed study of the interactions of crushing design variables with actual rock mechanics. A standard DEM approach cannot be applied to systems where size reduction is an important element in the flow of particles, such as industrial crushers. In these systems, it is necessary to physically decrease the particle sizes in a realistic way, as they are transported through the device. ...

In Brief The combined spinal-epidural technique (CSE) has been associated with prolonged motor recovery and more frequent arterial hypotension as compared with a single-shot spinal (SSS) technique. We determined the median effective dose (MED) of intrathecal hyperbaric bupivacaine for CSE and SSS by using the up-down sequential allocation technique. Sixty male patients were randomly allocated to receive intrathecal administration through an SSS or CSE technique. Needle insertion occurred at the L3- ...

Parents are integral in the treatment of pediatric eating disorders. The current study was conducted to further understand the barriers and facilitators that parents experience in accessing specialized, tertiary level eating disorder treatment for children and adolescents. The goals of the study were to understand the processes leading to diagnosis and treatment, perceived barriers and facilitators to accessing care, and parents' experiences over the course of their child's eating disorder treatment. ...

Responding to this, a weekly virtual coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) neurology multi-disciplinary meeting was established at the National Hospital, Queen Square, in early March 2020 in order to discuss and begin to understand neurological presentations in patients with suspected COVID-19-related neurological disorders. ...

This study reports on the controlled vapor-phase anion exchange conversion of three-dimensional (3D) platinum(II) sulfide (PtS) thin films to two-dimensional platinum ditelluride (2D PtTe2) van der Waals (vdW) layers. The low temperature (i.e., 400 °C) thermal tellurization of chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown PtS thin films leads to the formation of 2D PtTe2 vdW layers with a modulated crystallographic orientation, i.e., a mixture of horizontally and vertically oriented 2D layers. This chemical conversion ...

We see faces every day, and all of them leave us with different impressions. Our brains also respond emotionally to new and familiar faces we find in non-animated objects, paintings, and sculptures. To retain such memory of a face or express our feelings, we create portraits. Portraits have fascinated us for millennia. Abstract Background Pancreatic surgery remains associated with high morbidity rates. Although postoperative mortality appears to have improved with specialization, the outcomes reported in the literature reflect the activity of highly specialized centres. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes following pancreatic surgery worldwide. Methods This was an international, prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional snapshot study of consecutive patients undergoing pancreatic operations worldwide ...

Current practice following injury within the United Kingdom is to receive surgery, at the institution of first contact regardless of ability to provide timely intervention and inconsiderate of neighbouring hospital resource and capacity. This can lead to a mismatch of demand and capacity, delayed surgery and stress within hospital systems, particularly with regards to elective services. We demonstrate through a multicentre, multinational study, the impact of this at scale.ORTHOPOD data collection ...
