Objective Altered composition of the B cell compartment in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterized by expanded plasmablast and IgD–CD27– double‐negative B cell populations. Previous studies showed that double‐negative B cells represent a heterogeneous subset, and further characterization is needed. Methods We analyzed 2 independent cohorts of healthy donors and SLE patients, using a combined approach of flow cytometry (for 16 healthy donors and 28 SLE patients) and ...

Most attempts to predict early kidney allograft loss are based on the patient and donor characteristics at baseline. We investigated how the early posttransplant creatinine course compares to baseline information in the prediction of kidney graft failure within the first 4 years after transplantation. Two approaches to create a prediction rule for early graft failure were evaluated. First, the whole data set was analysed using a decision-tree building software. The software, rpart, builds classification ...

It is generally assumed that the production of plant fibre textiles in ancient Europe, especially woven textiles for clothing, was closely linked to the development of agriculture through the use of cultivated textile plants (flax, hemp). Here we present a new investigation of the 2800 year old Lusehøj Bronze Age Textile from Voldtofte, Denmark, which challenges this assumption. We show that the textile is made of imported nettle, most probably from the Kärnten-Steiermark region, an area which at ...

Generating electricity via electrochemical conversion of chemical energy within a fuel cell is a very promising approach, which is investigated in many laboratories worldwide. Although the fuel cell principle has been known since many years, dedicated studies are needed to make this technology competing and cost efficient. Especially, low-temperature fuel cells have gained interest as high-efficiency converters for mobile and portable applications. These polymer electrolyte fuel cells and direct ...

Because of increasing bacterial resistance worldwide, the search for new antibacterial agents is more pressing than ever. Advances achieved with the extended broad-spectrum β-lactams and the quinolones against a large number of pathogens have been compromised over the last few years by bacteria carrying novel β-lactamases and/or chromosomal mutations of penicillin-binding proteins and/or the DNA gyrase A and/or other forms of resistance affecting these agents. However, researchers from Korea (LG ...

For thousands of years the Eurasian steppes have been a centre of human migrations and cultural change. Here we sequence the genomes of 137 ancient humans (about 1× average coverage), covering a period of 4,000 years, to understand the population history of the Eurasian steppes after the Bronze Age migrations. We find that the genetics of the Scythian groups that dominated the Eurasian steppes throughout the Iron Age were highly structured, with diverse origins comprising Late Bronze Age herders, ...

NY-BR-1 was recently identified by autologous serological typing of the recombinant expression library in a breast cancer patient. Extensive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed the presence of NY-BR-1 in normal breast tissue and tumors derived thereof. Except normal testis, no other normal tissue or tumors showed NY-BR-1 expression. However, nothing is known about the expression of its actual antigen. In the present study, we describe the generation of 2 new monoclonal ...

Catheter-associated bacteriuria (CAB) with transurethral catheters is almost inevitable. Suprapubic catheters (SPCs) are widely considered to decrease the risk of CAB. However, SPCs are implants similarly prone to microbial biofilm formation. The spectrum of colonising pathogens has not been investigated. The aim of this prospective study was: (1) to assess the diversity of microbial suprapubic catheter colonisation (MSPCC), (2) to identify risk factors and (3) to investigate its association with CAB ...

Storage LUTS are commonly attributed to the irritation of the trigone, smooth muscle spasm or a combination of factors. The relationship between microbial ureteral stent colonization (MUSC) and de novo or worsening storage LUTS has not been investigated yet.Five hundred ninety-one polyurethane ureteral stents from 275 male and 153 female patients were prospectively evaluated. ...

One of the many contributions the old EPOS 1.0 facility made to spaceflight rendezvous is the verification of the Jena-Optronik laser-based sensors used by the Automated Transfer Vehicle. While EPOS 2.0 builds upon its heritage, it is a completely new design aiming at considerably more complex rendezvous scenarios. During the last ten years, GSOC’s On-Orbit- ...

This liberal education is commonly alluded to with the phrase "the art and science of nursing." Yet how do we as nursing educators integrate these two concepts? This article describes a method of integrating the humanities as part of an innovative clinical experience. A defined visual art experience was used to improve professional nursing students' observational and communication ...

The water distribution across the membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA) of a working polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) was observed in situ using neutron radiography. In order to resolve the distribution between the different layers of the MEA, in plane imaging (cell membrane parallel to the beam) was used. Unprecedented spatial resolution for neutron radiography was obtained using a new detector system available at PSI combined with specific anisotropic resolution enhancement methods. Improvements in the spatial resolution of neutron imaging were specifically developed for application in fuel cell imaging, where the resolution requirement in different directions may vary by 1 order of magnitude, thus making anisotropic setups attractive. A maximal spatial resolution of could be reached. For the transient studies, the combination of a high resolution of with exposure times of 10 s proved to resolve the water evolution, both temporally and spatially.

A simplified, miniaturized polymer electrolyte fuel cell without gas diffusion layers was investigated under operation by neutron radiography. By visualizing liquid water, it was possible to identify limiting effects, which are directly related to the simplified construction principle. Depending on the operation conditions, undesired water accumulation either in particular micro-channels or on the cathode catalyst layer as well as drying of the anode catalyst layer was observed. The small GTPase DiRas1 has tumor-suppressive activities, unlike the oncogenic properties more common to small GTPases such as K-Ras and RhoA. Although DiRas1 has been found to be a tumor suppressor in gliomas and esophageal squamous cell carcinomas, the mechanisms by which it inhibits malignant phenotypes have not been fully determined. In this study, we demonstrate that DiRas1 binds to SmgGDS, a protein that promotes the activation of several oncogenic GTPases. In silico docking studies predict ...
