Objectives. To characterize community health worker (CHW) performance using an algorithm for managing common childhood illnesses in Siaya District, Kenya, we conducted CHW evaluations in 1998, 1999, and 2001. Methods. Randomly selected CHWs were observed managing sick outpatient and inpatient children at a hospital, and their management was compared with that of an expert clinician who used the algorithm. Results. One hundred, 108, and 114 CHWs participated in the evaluations in 1998, 1999, and 2001, ...

Many studies adduce evidence of ethnic or racial dissimilarities in developmental outcomes (e.g., delinguency and achievement). Many researchers fail to distinguish between group average levels and developmental processes (correlations). Evidence is reviewed that developmental processes are nearly identical for U.S. Black, Hispanic, White, and Asian ethnic and racial groups. Using diverse and representative data sources, covariance matrices were computed for these ethnic groups and then compared by ...

Abstract Attentional impairment in depression is a cardinal feature of depression and has been proposed as a candidate endophenotype for major depressive disorder. Event‐related potentials (ERPs) elicited by oddball signal detection tasks provide objective markers of selective stimulus processing, and are pertinent endophenotypic markers for depression. While previous studies have sought to determine objective markers for attentional impairment in depression, evidence is inconsistent and may involve ...

is more complex. We have identified 200 to 500 nucleotide CNS from -20kb of the transcription start site throughout the transcription unit and in the 20kb 3’ flanking region. Therefore, we are building a DMP1 BAC construct that will have all of these CNS and potential enhancer modules of the DMP1 gene driving a GFP reporter. In parallel, we have constructed a database of all transcription factors that bind within the DMP1 CNS and cross-indexed this set of binding sites with osteocyte selective transcription ...

Elevated stump skin temperatures and the accompanying thermal discomfort are side effects of prosthesis use that may reduce amputee quality of life, particularly in hot or humid surroundings. Lower skin temperatures might be achieved through more effective heat transfer in the prosthesis, a process governed in part by the thermal conductivity of the sock, liner, and socket layers. To assess the thermodynamic properties of currently available components, an instrument capable of measuring the heat ...

Cerebellopontine angle arachnoid cysts are usually asymptomatic, but are frequently found incidentally because of increased use of neuroimaging. Nevertheless, as these cysts enlarge, they may compress surrounding structures and cause neurological symptoms. Patients may present with vague, nonspecific symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and vertigo. Cranial nerve palsies, including sensorineural hearing loss and facial weakness, although rare, have also been reported in association with ...

Our previous studies have shown that the 49-base pair region of promoter DNA between −1719 and −1670 base pairs is necessary for transcription of the rat COL1A1 gene in transgenic mouse calvariae. In this study, we further define this element to the 13-base pair region between −1683 and −1670. This element contains a TAAT motif that binds homeodomain-containing proteins. Site-directed mutagenesis of this element in the context of a COL1A1-chloramphenicol acetyltransferase construct extending to −3518 ...

Classification of power-quality (PQ)-related voltage and current waveform disturbances is a key task for power system monitoring. A new method based on the optimized time-frequency representation (TFR) has been proposed in the first paper of this two-paper series. This paper (the second paper) presents a case study of PQ event classification with the proposed method. The classification algorithm has been successfully tested with 860 real world PQ events that cover five classes, achieving a recognition ...

The use of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for study and treatment of bone diseases or traumatic bone injuries requires efficient protocols to differentiate hESCs/iPSCs into cells with osteogenic potential and the ability to isolate differentiated osteoblasts for analysis. The in vivo osteogenesis potential of mesenchymal-like cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESC-MCs) was evaluated in vivo by implantation on collagen/hydroxyapatite scaffolds into calvarial defects in immunodeficient mice. This study is novel because no osteogenic or chondrogenic differentiation protocols were applied to the cells prior to implantation. After 6 weeks, X-ray, microCT, and histological analysis showed that the hESC-MCs had consistently formed a highly vascularized new bone ...

This study examines frictional heating and the associated temperature rise for a sliding circular contact using an in situ thermal micro-tribometer. Observation of the contact temperature used a radiometric approach to measure local temperature at the sliding interface with an emphasis on full field imaging and thermal accuracy. Filled natural rubber samples were slid against optically smooth CaF2 counter-samples. Temperature rise was measured for externally applied normal forces ranging from∼100 ...
