Summary 1. Emerging diseases pose significant ecological and economic threats in fresh waters. Both risk assessment and mathematical modelling have potential to improve our understanding of the uncertainties associated with emerging disease events and make informed predictions about their likely impact. 2. We review the different methodologies that may be used to estimate the likely geographic spread and potential impact of new and emerging diseases in fresh waters. We also highlight the limitations ...

The two painted vases reproduced on Pl. LXII. are part of a collection of antiquities found in some twenty tombs, which were excavated in 1879 in the island of Lipara, not far from the present town of that name. The precise locality is known as the Contrada Diana and is the property of Signor Scolarici. A road leading to it is called the Via Diana, and this name seems to have originated in the ruins of three small shrines which popular opinion has attributed to that goddess. The presence of these ...

When Mr. Wood in his patient and successful excavation of the temple of Artemis at Ephesus had got down to the natural soil, he observed a number of massive piers underneath the walls of the cella, or rather where the cella walls ought to have been. On the plan in his book he indicates these piers by dotted lines, supposing them to have been made to support the walls of a church built in late times after the temple had been destroyed. It may have been so. But there appears to be no other indication ...

Two new network solids containing mercury ions are reported. The structure of HgCl4·H2tpt·H2O (tpt = 1,3,5-tri(4-pyridyl)-2,4,6-triazine) contains H2tpt2+ cations connected into 1D zigzag chains via hydrogen bonding between protonated and unprotonated pyridyl groups of adjacent cations. The third pyridyl group of each H2tpt2+ cation is also protonated and hydrogen-bonds to tetrahedral HgCl42- anions that lie as appendages to the main hydrogen-bonded chain. Systemic enzyme replacement for Gaucher's disease has not prevented premature death or severe morbidity in patients with a neuronopathic phenotype, because the enzyme does not cross the blood-brain barrier. We used convection-enhanced delivery for regional distribution of glucocerebrosidase in rat and primate brains and examined its safety and feasibility for neuronopathic Gaucher's disease. Rats underwent intrastriatal infusion and were observed and then sacrificed at 14 hours, 4 days, or 6 weeks. ...

The structures of six new derivatives of copper(I) dicyanamide (dicyanamide = N(CN)2−, dca) have been determined. Those of Cu(dca)(MeCN) 1 and Cu(dca)(Me4pyz)1/22, Me4pyz = tetramethylpyrazine, both contain (6,3) sheets. Cu2(dca)2(bipy)(MeCN)2·0.5bipy 3, bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, consists of 1-D ladder-like polymers with intercalated bipy guests. Cu4(dca)4(bipy)3(MeCN)24 is composed of 2-D layers which each interpenetrate with four others in a parallel fashion, resulting in a novel 3-D interlocking of layers. ...

The rhyton here published was found in a tomb at Capua in 1872, as described briefly in the Bullettino of that year (p. 42); it was acquired in the following year by the British Museum, and was soon thereafter included, but only in one view, among the ‘Photographs of the Castellani Collection,’ pl. 12. Always much admired for its beauty, both in the modelling of the Sphinx and in the drawing of the figures which encircle the cup above her head or occupy the spaces under her body, this vase has been ...
