Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with the occurrence of white matter plaques in the central nervous system. These are frequently located in areas interconnecting areas associated with the processing of emotions. Although recent behavioral studies indicated social and affective disturbances in many of these patients, functional studies investigating specific emotional recognition in MS are lacking. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and lesion mapping in MS-patients to investigate ...

Combined geodetic, geophysical and glaciological in situ measurements are interpreted regarding surface height changes over subglacial Lake Vostok and the local mass balance of the ice sheet at Vostok station. Repeated GPS observations spanning 5 years and long‐term surface accumulation data show that the height of the lake surface has not changed over the observation period. The application of the mass conservation equation to purely observational data yields an ice mass balance for Vostok station ...

Studies using facial emotional expressions as stimuli partially support the assumption of biased processing of social signals in social phobia. This pilot study explored for the first time whether individuals with social phobia display a processing bias towards emotional prosody. Fifteen individuals with generalized social phobia and fifteen healthy controls (HC) matched for gender, age, and education completed a recognition test consisting of meaningless utterances spoken in a neutral, angry, sad, ...

In the austral summer seasons 2001/02 and 2002/03, Global Positioning System (GPS) data were collected in the vicinity of Vostok Station to determine ice flow velocities over Lake Vostok. Ten GPS sites are located within a radius of 30 km around Vostok Station on floating ice as well as on grounded ice to the east and to the west of the lake. Additionally, a local deformation network around the ice core drilling site 5G-1 was installed. The derived ice flow velocity for Vostok Station is 2.00 m a− ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of polymorphisms in the genes for β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) and in uncoupling proteins 1 and 2 (UCP-1, UCP-2) in obesity. DESIGN: Association study with three polymorphisms and obesity. SUBJECTS: Two hundred and thirty-six morbidly obese patients who underwent gastric banding surgery, 381 patients from the medical clinic and 198 healthy blood donors. MEASUREMENTS: The frequencies of the W64R in β3-AR, the −3826A→G in UCP-1 and the 45 bp insertion in the 3′ untranslated ...

Variation in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) gene may play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore we investigated the association between the P12A and c1431t polymorphisms in the PPARγ gene and type 2 diabetes. The incidence of the P12A polymorphism was determined by PCR-RFLP and the c1431t by single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis in 219 patients with, and 429 without type 2 diabetes. The frequency of the A allele of P12A polymorphism ...

The membrane-associated protein squalene-hopene cyclase from Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and purified by ion exchange and gel permeation chromatography. Crystals of three interrelated forms were grown by vapor diffusion under identical conditions. The crystals diffract to about 2.3 A resolution, but they are unstable in the X-ray beam. An interpretable heavy-atom derivative was obtained.

Mass spectrometric peptide mapping, particularly by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization (MALDI-MS), has recently been shown to be an efficient tool for the primary structure characterization of proteins. In combination with in situ proteolytic digestion of proteins separated by one- and two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), mass spectrometric peptide mapping permits identification of proteins from complex mixtures such as cell lysates. In this ...
