Prospective studies on the association between depression and telomere length have produced mixed results and have been largely limited to European ancestry populations. We examined the associations between depression and telomere length, and the modifying influence of religion and spirituality, in four cohorts participating in the Study on Stress, Spirituality and Health, each representing a different race/ethnic population. Relative leukocyte telomere length (RTL) was measured by a quantitative ...

Alexandra Kent,

Purpose – This chapter examines children's options for responding to parental attempts to get them to do something (directives).Methodology/approach – The data for the study are video recordings of everyday family mealtime interactions. The study uses conversation analysis and discursive psychology to conduct a microanalysis of sequences of everyday family mealtimes interactions in which a parent issues a directive and a child responds.Findings – It is very difficult for children to resist parental directives ...

Background Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a widespread method of transportation due to convenience and affordability. However, the financial impact of medical care for sustained injuries is currently unknown. The purpose of this study is to characterize total billing charges associated with medical care of e-scooter injuries. Methods A retrospective review of patients with e-scooter injuries presenting to the trauma bay, emergency department or outpatient clinics at an urban level 1 trauma ...

OBJECTIVES We evaluated the short- and long-term clinical outcomes after percutaneous revascularization of the internal mammary artery (IMA) graft. BACKGROUND Previous reports in a relatively small number of patients have indicated the safety of balloon angioplasty for the treatment of stenoses in the IMA graft. However, the use of alternative interventional techniques and their long-term results have not yet been evaluated. METHODS We analyzed the in-hospital and one-year clinical outcomes of 174 ...

To assess the financial outcomes and associated social and economic effects on cancer survivors and their families. We assessed the responses of 1656 cancer survivors to a survey with both closed- and open-ended questions about cancer-related financial sacrifices they and their family experienced and evaluated differences in financial sacrifice by reported levels of cancer-related debt. The most commonly reported financial sacrifices included cutbacks on household budgets, challenges with health ...

Bastnäsite is a fluoro-carbonate mineral that is the largest source of rare earth elements (REEs) such as Y, La, and Ce. With increasing demand for REE in many emerging technologies, there is an urgent need for improving the efficiency of ore beneficiation by froth flotation. To design improved flotation agents that can selectively bind to the mineral surface, a fundamental understanding of the bulk and surface properties of bastnäsite is essential. Unexpectedly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations ...

Patients at an urban Level 1 Trauma center sustaining e-scooter injuries between November 2017 through March 2020 were identified. Primary outcomes of interest were major trauma, as defined by an Injury Severity Score (ISS) >15, or hospital admission. A total of 442 patients sustained ...

With increasing cancer care costs and greater patient cost-sharing in the USA, understanding access to medical care among cancer survivors is imperative. This study aims to identify financial, psychosocial, and cancer-related barriers to the receipt of medical care, tests, or treatments deemed necessary by the doctor or patient for cancer among cancer survivors age < 65 years. We used data on 4321 cancer survivors aged 18–64 years who completed the 2012 LIVESTRONG Survey. Multivariable logistic regression ...

Objectives: Genetic susceptibility is known to play a large part in the predisposition to the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) known as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The IL2/IL21 locus on 4q27 is known to be a common risk locus for inflammatory disease (shown in coeliac disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriasis), while the roles that interleukin 2 (IL2) and IL21 play in the immune response also make them attractive candidates for IBD. The objective ...

Abstract Volcanic eruption source parameters may be estimated from acoustic pressure recordings dominant at infrasonic frequencies (< 20 Hz), yet uncertainties may be high due in part to poorly understood propagation dynamics. Linear acoustic propagation of volcano infrasound is commonly assumed, but nonlinear processes such as wave steepening may distort waveforms and obscure the sourcing process in recorded waveforms. Here we use a previously developed frequency-domain nonlinearity indicator to quantify ...

A novel dendritic cell (DC)-restricted molecule, Clec9A, was identified by gene expression profiling of mouse DC subtypes. Based on sequence similarity, a human ortholog was identified. Clec9A encodes a type II membrane protein with a single extracellular C-type lectin domain. Both the mouse Clec9A and human CLEC9A were cloned and expressed, and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against each were generated. Surface staining revealed that Clec9A was selective for mouse DCs and was restricted to the CD8(+) ...

Proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) is a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the first step of proline catabolism, the oxidation of l-proline to Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate. PRODH has emerged as a cancer therapy target because of its involvement in the metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells. Here, we report the discovery of a new class of PRODH inactivator, which covalently and irreversibly modifies the FAD in a light-dependent manner. Two examples, 1,3-dithiolane-2-carboxylate and tetrahydrothiophene-2-carboxylate, ...
