Alcohol consumption among young adults is widely accepted in modern society and may be the starting point for abusive use of alcohol at later stages of life. Chronic alcohol exposure can lead to visual function impairment. In the present study, we investigated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity, colour arrangement ability, and colour discrimination thresholds on young adults that weekly consume alcoholic beverages without clinical concerns. Twenty-four young adults were evaluated by an ophthalmologist ...

The São Francisco River Basin (SFRB) is one of the largest basins in Brazil and hosts several economic activities. However, it is under socioeconomic and environmental vulnerabilities. The SFRB includes part of the biomes Caatinga, Atlantic Forest, and Cerrado in Brazil, which are undergoing strong economic pressures. Changes in land use land cover (LULC) affect carbon stocks at different intensities; thus, the valuation of carbon stocks can assist in decision-making, mainly in the context of ecosystem ...

The semiarid region in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, approximately 11,000 km2, has experienced high deforestation rates in the last decades, which ultimately contribute to global climatic changes. The valuation of ecosystem services of CO2 sequestration can support definition of environmental policies to decrease deforestation in that region. This study aimed to assess land use and land cover changes in the Sergipe semiarid region between 1992 and 2017 by applying remotely sensed data and technics; ...

This paper describes the major environmental aspects related to the cultivation of rice. Rice is one of the most important agricultural products and it is cultivated in almost all countries in the world. Its production requires usually large flooded areas. Under these conditions, many greenhouse gases are generated, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides and its derivatives. Cultivation of rice is responsible by the release of relevant amounts of these gases and contributes decisively ...

From August 2001 to July 2002, sand flies were collected from the bases of trees and, using CDC and Disney traps, from areas surrounding homes and forested areas in the São João community, on the urban periphery of Manaus, State of Amazonas. 4,104 specimens belonging to four subtribes, 13 genera and 49 species of the Phlebotominae subfamily were collected. The subtribe Psychodopygina predominated, with 3,403 (83%) specimens, especially of Nyssomyia umbratilis, Nyssomyia anduzei, Trichophoromyia eurypyga, ...

In this work, we report evidences that the association of phosphofructokinase and F-actin can be affected by insulin stimulation in rabbit skeletal muscle homogenates and that this association can be a mechanism of phos-phofructokinase regulation. Through co-sedimentation techniques, we observed that on insulin-stimulated tissues, approximately 70% of phosphofructokinase activity is co-located in an actin-enriched fraction, against 28% in control. This phenomenon is accompanied by a 100% increase ...

The rate of activation of tension development by free Ca2+ was examined in skinned rat ventricular myocytes. Pulse photolysis of the photosensitive Ca2+ chelator, Nitr-7, was used to rapidly elevate Ca2+ in the vicinity of the myofilaments. Tension increased exponentially with a first-order rate constant (kCa) that depended on the level of Ca2+ activation. kCa increased approximately linearly from 0.9 +/- 0.2 s-1 at 20% maximal Ca(2+)-activated tension (Po) to 4.0 +/- 0.9 s-1 at 85% Po, representing a fourfold ...

Binding of two Ca 2+ to the regulatory sites I and II of troponin C (TnC) induces a conformational transition believed to be responsible for the activation of muscle contraction. Based on the known crystal structure (2Ca 2+ state), a model for the transition to the 4Ca 2+ state has been proposed [Herzberg, O., Moult, J. & James, M. N. G. (1986) J. Biol. Chem. 261 , 2638–2644]. The proposed conformational transition predicts that during Ca 2+ binding a number of nonpolar residues become exposed to the solvent, ...

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) are highly specialized, and exhibit a contractile phenotype when mature and fully differentiated, being responsible for vessel homeostasis and blood pressure control. In response to pro-atherogenic stimuli VSMC alter their state of differentiation, increase proliferation and migration, resulting in SMC phenotypes ranging from contractile to synthetic. This variability is observed in cell morphology and expression level of marker genes for differentiation status. ...
