The microbiological quality of beef and meat products is strongly influenced by the conditions of hygiene prevailing during their production and handling. Without proper hygienic control, the environment in slaughterhouses and butcher shops can act as an important source of microbiological contamination. To identify the main points of microbiological contamination in the beef processing chain, 443 samples of equipment, installations and products were collected from 11 establishments (1 slaughterhouse ...

This study aimed to develop an optimal set and size model of bioenergy facilities using a GIS framework. Data from sugarcane plantations were used to create case scenarios. Spatial analysis was accomplished by applying a two-phase approach: identification of suitable zones to locate bioenergy facilities and identification of ideal areas. These analyses led to a location-allocation model, using Maximize Capacitated Coverage option, in order to assign sugarcane supply areas to potential bioenergy ...

Wood production from native tree species in Brazil is primarily limited to exploitation of natural forests. The identification of potential habitats for tree planting may provide new opportunities for natural forest conservation and management and increase the viability of native species plantations for highly valuable wood production. This study aimed to identify potential habitats for native tree planting using a crop-zoning model that combines environmental variables and wood demand modeling. ...

The foremost objective of this study was to analyze the performance of a Markov chain/cellular automata model for predicting land use/land cover changes in environments predisposed to desertification. The study area is the Vieira river basin, located in Montes Claros (MG, Brazil). Land use/land cover prognosis was performed for the year 2005 so that this result could be compared with the ranked image for the same year, taken as ground truth. Kappa indices were used to evaluate the change level that ...

Modern society is dependent on energy use in several ways. Due to environmental and strategic issues, biomass is emerging as an alternative for the diversification of energy sources worldwide. Forest biomass is abundant at Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil, but its usage for power generation remains a niche pathway yet to be exploited. The geographical planning of biomass energy production is of the utmost importance to guarantee the distribution of cheap and clean energy. This study presents a ...

Brazil is one of the leading timber producers in the world. However, in South Brazil, frost events frequently cause damage and reduce yield in forest plantations, a situation predicted to become more common under global change scenarios. This raises the need for low cost and efficient tools, such as machine learning algorithms to improve forecasting of frost risk. This study used machine learning algorithms to create zoning classifications forecasting frost risk for forest plantations located in ...

Many countries have environmental legislation to protecting natural resources on private property. In Brazil, the Brazilian Forestry Code determines specific areas to maintain with natural vegetation cover, known as areas of permanent preservation (APP). Currently, there are few studies that relate topographic variables on APP. Abstract In this study we show for the first time how quantitative stress estimates can be derived by combining calcite twinning and stylolite roughness stress fingerprinting techniques in a fold‐and‐thrust belt. First, we present a new method that gives access to stress inversion using tectonic stylolites without access to the stylolite surface and compare results with calcite twin inversion. Second, we use our new approach to present a high‐resolution deformation and stress history that affected ...

For that evaluation, time-frequency analysis techniques were employed for two didactic signals and a experimental signal from velocity fluctuation. Thye velocity signal was acquired by a single hot wire probe. In all cases, the wavelet transform was able to identify periods with low energy levels, showing to be efficient in the identification of intermittency or anomalies ...
