In this paper we tackle the problem of hair analysis in unconstrained images. We propose a fully convolutional, multi-task neural network to segment the image pixels into hair, face and background classes. The network also decides if the person is bald or not. The detected hair pixels are analyzed by a color recognition module which uses color features extracted at super-pixel level and a Random Forest Classifier to determine the hair tone (black, blond, brown, red or white grey). To train and test ...

Knowledge distillation is a widely-used and effective technique to boost the performance of a lightweight student network, by having it mimic the behavior of a more powerful teacher network. This paper presents an end-to-end online knowledge distillation strategy, in which several peer students are trained together and their predictions are aggregated into a powerful teacher ensemble via an effective ensembling technique that uses an online supervisor network to determine the optimal way of combining ...

In recent years, the worldwide epidemic of metabolic diseases, namely obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been strongly associated with constant exposure to endocrine-disruptive chemicals (EDCs), in particular, the ones able to disrupt various metabolic pathways. EDCs have a negative impact on several human tissues/systems, including metabolically active organs, such as the liver and pancreas. Among their deleterious effects, EDCs induce mitochondrial ...

Introduction: Bone mass density (BMD) is still the gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, but bone turnover markers (BTMs) can provide helpful information regarding the bone remodeling process. The aim of this study was to determine the correlations between BMD and serum levels of BTMs (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b [TRAP-5b]), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP), estradiol (E 2 ), and magnesium (Mg [2+] ) ion concentrations in postmenopausal osteoporotic women as compared to healthy ...

Large-scale deep learning models have achieved impressive results on a variety of tasks; however, their deployment on edge or mobile devices is still a challenge due to the limited available memory and computational capability. Knowledge distillation is an effective model compression technique, which can boost the performance of a lightweight student network by transferring the knowledge from a more complex model or an ensemble of models. Due to its reduced size, this lightweight model is more suitable ...

Abstract Accessibility on edge devices and the trade-off between latency and accuracy is an area of interest in deploying deep learning models. This paper explores a Mixture of Experts system, namely, DynK-Hydra, which allows training of an ensemble formed of multiple similar branches on data sets with a high number of classes, but uses, during the inference, only a subset of necessary branches. We achieve this by training a cohort of specialized branches (deep network of reduced size) and a gater/ ...

Inherited thrombophilia represents a prothrombotic disorder that predisposes to thrombosis. We present a case of a 67-year-old female with a personal and family history of iterative thrombotic events. She was admitted in the Surgical Clinic at the age of 59, presenting the classical symptoms and signs for left lower limb deep vein thrombosis, confirmed by a venous Duplex Ultrasonography. This was the third episode of a venous thrombosis. Under anticoagulant treatment the evolution was good. The patient ...

Background and Objectives: The rate of head and neck cancer (HNC) is expected to increase by 30% by 2030. However, there are many similarities between the symptomatology of a benign and a malign diagnosis; thus, a protocol for conducting a full head and neck examination is of high importance since the absence of adenopathy does not exclude a malignant diagnosis and also a favorable prognosis. Material and methods: The current study presents a retrospective study on 515 adult patients who underwent ...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifaceted autoimmune disorder characterized by significant autoantibodies, particularly targeting nuclear antigens. SLE pathogenesis involves genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. The disease course includes flares and remission and involves various organs. Recent therapeutic progresses, including biologics, have improved management and prognosis, though the long-term impact of novel therapies remains to be determined. Biologics in SLE: Rituximab, ...
