We present the results of beam tests with high-energy (8–375 GeV) electrons, pions, protons and muons of a sampling calorimeter based on the detection of Cherenkov light produced by shower particles. The detector, a prototype for the very forward calorimeters in the CMS experiment, consists of thin quartz fibers embedded in a copper matrix. Results are given on the light yield of this device, on its energy resolution for electron and hadron detection, and on the signal uniformity and linearity. The ...

Experimental and theoretical investigations were made of the active-medium gain and of the parameters of the radiation emitted by an rf-pumped slab CO2 laser. The average output power was 160 W and the efficiency was 10%. Near-diffraction-limited divergence was achieved. In the pulse-periodic regime, the pulse power was twice the average power in the cw regime. When external correcting optics was used, the total divergence of the laser radiation was 2–3 mrad at 0.8 of the total power. A suite of ...

For the various pumping rates and for the various heights of the gap were calculated the average value of the small- signal gain and its profile across the gap. For the high power slab CO 2 -lasers, RF-excited at 40.68 MHz, were analyzed the ranges of their geometry parameters vibration, providing for the possibility of diffraction limited performance. In theory and in experiment was shown the possibility to select the basic waveguide mode of radiation.

CMS very forward calorimeter is based on a quartz fibre technology. The calorimeter prototype composed of two longitudinal segments was tested at CERN in 1996. We present the test beam data analysis of this prototype. It was shown that the mean values of responses for pions and electrons of the same energy could be equalised using the appropriate ratio of calibration constants for longitudinal segments. The beam test data were used to simulate the calorimeter response to hadron jets.

Abstract The standard model of particle physics 1–4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles 5–9 . The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs ...

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for high-mass resonances decaying to dielectron or dimuon final states. Results are presented from an analysis of proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 in the dielectron channel and 20.5 fb-1 in the dimuon channel. A narrow resonance with Standard Model Z couplings to fermions is excluded at 95% confidence level for masses less than 2.79 TeV in the dielectron ...

Differential and double-differential distributions of kinematic variables of leptons from decays of top-quark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) are measured using the full LHC Run 2 data sample collected with the ATLAS detector. The data were collected at a $pp$ collision energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$. The measurements use events containing an oppositely charged $e\mu$ pair and $b$-tagged jets. The results are compared with predictions from several Monte Carlo ...

A search for the Higgs boson decaying into a photon and a pair of electrons or muons with an invariant mass mℓℓ<30 GeV is presented. The analysis is performed using 139 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data, produced by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and collected by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for the H→ℓℓγ process is found with a significance of 3.2 over the background-only hypothesis, compared to an expected significance of 2.1 for the Standard Model prediction. The best-fit value ...

The azimuthal variation of jet yields in heavy-ion collisions provides information about the path-length dependence of the energy loss experienced by partons passing through the hot, dense nuclear matter known as the quark--gluon plasma. This paper presents the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients ${v}_{2}, {v}_{3}$, and ${v}_{4}$ measured for jets in $\text{Pb}+\text{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement uses data collected in 2015 and 2018, ...

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give ...

Abstract The jet energy scale, jet energy resolution, and their systematic uncertainties are measured for jets reconstructed with the ATLAS detector in 2012 using proton–proton data produced at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of $$20 \, \hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ 20 fb - 1 . Jets are reconstructed from clusters of energy depositions in the ATLAS calorimeters using the anti- $$k_t$$ k t algorithm. A jet calibration scheme is applied in multiple steps, each addressing specific effects including ...

This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search A→BC, for m_{A}∼O(TeV), ...

In this paper, a new technique for reconstructing and identifying hadronically decaying $\tau^+\tau^-$ pairs with a large Lorentz boost, referred to as the di-$\tau$ tagger, is developed and used for the first time in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A benchmark di-$\tau$ tagging selection is employed in the search for resonant Higgs boson pair production, where one Higgs boson decays into a boosted $b\bar{b}$ pair and the other into a boosted $\tau^+\tau^-$ pair, with two hadronically ...
