These observations then show that in one way or the other the heart was affected in 35 of 37 cases of rheumatic fever. The evidence was of three sorts; first, the duration of auriculoventricular conduction was increased, though not always, and usually not to the degree of causing heart block; second, alteration in the ventricular complex of the electrocardiogram affecting in certain instances the Q R S complex and in others either the interval between R wave and T wave, or the T wave itself; and ...

Elevated levels of cholesterol synthesis are reported for several young children with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HFH) and are considered to contribute directly to their hypercholesterolemia. In contrast, increased cholesterol production has not previously been found in adult patients with HFH. Using the fecal steroid balance technique, we studied rates of cholesterol and bile acid synthesis in a 24-yr-old man who had severe hypercholesterolemia typical of HFH and who lacked skin fibroblast ...

Background Depression affects women nearly twice as often as men, but the neurobiological underpinnings of this discrepancy are unclear. Preclinical studies in male mice suggest that activity of ventral hippocampus (vHPC) neurons projecting to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) regulates mood-related behavioral responses to stress. We sought to characterize this circuit in both sexes and to investigate its role in potential sex differences in models of depression. Methods We used male and female adult C57BL/ ...

Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is refractory to standard dietary or drug therapy. Recent studies, however, suggest that a high-carbohydrate/low-fat diet may reduce circulating cholesterol levels in normal or hyperlipidemic subjects. In this regard, we treated a nine year old boy with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with a liquid formula diet containing 82 to 90 percent of total calories as glucose. The diet was given as a constant nasogastric infusion or as intermittent daytime ...

IN the poem entitled Andreas by modern editors, we learn that Matthew had come to Mermedonia (line 42) in order to preach the Gospel to the man-eaters. The wild Mermedonians took him captive and intended to kill him. In prison, Matthew prayed fervently for his rescue, and a divine voice promised him delivery. The task of rescuing Matthew fell to Andrew in Achaia (line 169a), who, on being summoned to help Matthew, hesitated and indicated that he did not even know how he could get to Mermedonia. God ...
