Angiotensin-(1–7) and resveratrol have been described as new potential therapeutic tools on treating and preventing metabolic disorders. In the present study we aimed to evaluate the effect of an oral formulation of angiotensin-(1–7) [Ang-(1–7)] included in HPB-cyclodextrin and resveratrol (RSV), in modulation of sirtuin and renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in adipose tissue of mice treated with a high-fat diet (HFD). We observed that HFD + Ang-(1–7) and HFD + RSV groups presented marked decrease in the adipose ...

Angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7) has been described as an important tool on treating and preventing metabolic disorders. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of an oral formulation of Ang-(1-7) included in hydroxypropylβ-cyclodextrin (HPβCD/Ang-[1-7]) on hepatic function, steatosis, and on liver inflammatory markers expression in mice treated with a high-fat diet. Male FVB/N mice were divided into 4 groups and fed for 60 days, with each group receiving 1 of the following diets: standard diet+HPβCD, ...

The menisci are fibroelastic structures interposed between the articular surfaces of the femur and tibia. They absorb impact and transmit load. Meniscal injury may compromise function and cause rapid joint degeneration, leading to the development of secondary osteoarthritis. Surgical treatment of meniscal injury is usually performed by arthroscopy, and meniscectomy or meniscal suture may be associated with such treatment. Meniscal suture should be considered when the injury compromises the proper ...

Mechanical properties studies of wood usually involve destructive wood assessments, with time-consuming tests that use large amounts of resource (wood). Although this is not a limiting factor, it could be attenuated by the use of a nondestructive technique known as near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This technique has been applied to evaluate compounds containing C-H, N-H, S-H or O-H bonds, and involves quick analyses and can be applied to process control tasks. The objective of this work is to use ...

Composting has been suggested as an efficient method for tannery sludge recycling before its application to the soil. However, the application of composted tannery sludge (CTS) should be monitored to evaluate its effect on the chemical and microbial properties of soil. This study evaluated the time-dependent effect of CTS on the chemical and microbial properties of soil. CTS was applied at 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 and the soil chemical and microbial properties were evaluated at 0, 45, 75, 150, ...

Granulometry represents the relative proportions of the fractions that compose the soil, being an important agronomic tool to infer mean values of density, water availability and cation exchange capacity, besides being useful in soil classification. Among the methods employed to determine the fractions composing the soil, those which consider the separation by sedimentation for the clay fraction still have problems in the analytical protocol, which are directly responsible of errors in the results ...

Chromium (Cr) accumulation in soil and plants has been reported after successive applications of tannery sludge, which is a matter of concern because Cr can promote environmental contamination and affect the food chain. In this study, we evaluated the growth of and Cr accumulation in maize and cowpea after seven years of consecutive applications of composted tannery sludge (CTS) under field conditions. The experiment consisted of application of CTS at five levels: 0 (control), 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ...

Molecular mechanisms of lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and actinic cheilitis (AC) are unclear. We aimed at assessing loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and TP53 and BRAF V600E mutations in these lesions. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples of 17 LSCC and 16 AC were included, with additional 5 fresh LSCC genotyped for TP53 mutations. LOH was assessed by six polymorphic markers located at 9p22, 9q22, and 17p13 and correlated with cell proliferation (Ki-67) and P53 immunostaining. Direct sequencing ...

Abstract: Seaweeds have attracted special interest as good sources of sulphated polysaccharides (SP) for use in pharmaceutical industries and biotechnology. In this study, we evaluated the effects of SP from the red seaweed Gracilaria cornea (Gc‐TSP) in nociceptive and inflammatory models. In mice, Gc‐TSP (3, 9 or 27 mg/kg) significantly reduced nociceptive responses, as measured by the number of writhes, at all tested doses.
