Flight in insects can be long-range migratory flights, intermediate-range dispersal flights, or short-range host-seeking flights. Previous studies have shown that flight mills are valuable tools for the experimental study of insect flight behavior, allowing researchers to examine how factors such as age, host plants, or population source can influence an insects' propensity to disperse. Flight mills allow researchers to measure components of flight such as speed and distance flown. Lack of detailed ...

Abstract A positive surgical margin (PSM) following cancer resection oftentimes necessitates adjuvant treatments and carries significant financial and prognostic implications. We sought to compare PSM rates for the ten most common solid cancers in the United States, and to assess trends over time. Over 10 million patients were identified in the National Cancer Data Base from 1998–2012, and 6.5 million had surgical margin data. PSM rates were compared between two time periods, 1998–2002 and 2008–2012. ...

Abstract We report ALMA detections of [C ii ] and a dust continuum in Az9, a multiply imaged galaxy behind the Frontier Field cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The bright [C ii ] emission line provides a spectroscopic redshift of z = 4.274. This strongly lensed ( μ = 7 ± 1) galaxy has an intrinsic stellar mass of only 2 × 10 9 M ⊙ and a total star formation rate of 26 M ⊙ yr −1 (∼80% of which is dust-obscured). Using public magnification maps, we reconstruct the [C ii ] emission in the source plane to reveal a stable, rotation- ...

PreviewPeople born without a sense of smell may not miss it, but those who have enjoyed and lost the sense certainly do. For some reason, however, the problem is often dismissed or not even sought during evaluation. The authors compile from their experience at a nasal dysfunction clinic information pertinent to primary care physicians and suggestions for management. They describe reversible and nonreversible causes of olfactory impairment and provide simplified algorithms to use in patient evaluation.

Suspension‐cultured rose ( Rosa damascena Mill. cv. Gloire de Guilan) cells irradiated with UV‐C (254 nm. 558 J m −2 ) showed a transient production of H 2 O 2 as measured by chemiluminescence of luminol in the presence of peroxidase (EC 1.1 1.1.7). The peak concentration of H 2 O 2 , which occurred at about 60–90 min after irradiation, was 8–9 μ M . The time course for the appearance of H 2 O 2 matched that for UV–induced K + efflux. Treatments that inhibited the UV‐induced efflux of K + , including heat and overnight ...

Chemokines regulate the trafficking of leukocytes in immunity and inflammation and have been implicated in mouse models in acute cardiac and renal allograft rejection; however, their significance to human transplantation is not yet defined. The association of human chemokine receptor genetic variants, CCR5-Delta32, CCR5-59029-A/G, CCR2-V64I, CX3CR1-V249I, and CX3CR1-T280M, with outcome in 163 renal transplant recipients was examined here. Significant reductions were found in risk of acute renal ...

Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder associated with bradyarrhythmias. We sought to examine the nature of conduction system abnormalities and the indications and determinants of anti-bradycardia pacing in patients with AFD. We studied 204 patients with AFD (49% male, mean age 42 years) in an observational, longitudinal, retrospective cohort study. At baseline, 5 (2.5%) patients had pacemakers for the treatment of bradycardias [4/5 (80%) for atrioventricular disease; ...

Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (IR) drives oxidative stress and injurious metabolic processes that lead to redox imbalance, inflammation, and tissue damage. However, the key mediators of reperfusion injury remain unclear, and therefore, there is considerable interest in therapeutically targeting metabolism and the cellular response to oxidative stress. The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular, metabolic, and physiological impact of itaconate treatment to mitigate reperfusion injuries ...

Given the enormous health, economic and societal consequences of the obesity pandemic, identifying effective primary prevention strategies represents a global priority. The aim of this study was to provide evidence on the association between adherence to a food-based score reflecting a set of targeted, well-informed, simple dietary recommendations and the incidence of overweight/obesity.A total of 11,349 initially free of overweight/obesity young adults (mean [SD] age: 34.7 y [10.7]), were followed ...

The p-T phase diagrams of two ternary systems (CO2 + Ar + N2 and CO2 + Ar + H2) have been measured at temperatures between 268 and 303 K using a fibre-optic phase equilibrium analyser. CO2, which is the major component, has a mole fraction ranging from 0.90 to 0.98 in both systems. The molar ratio of the two minor components is Ar:N2 = 1:1 and Ar:H2 = 2:3, respectively for the two ternary systems. In addition, the density of a ternary mixture with xAr = 0.050 and xN2 = 0.050 is reported at 293.15 K, 303.15 K, 313. ...

Ultraviolet (UV) light causes a specific leakage of K(+) from cultured rose cells (Rosa damascena). During K(+) efflux, there is also an increase in extracellular HCO(3) (-) and acidification of the cell interior. We hypothesized that the HCO(3) (-) originated from intracellular hydration of respiratory CO(2) and served as a charge balancing mechanism during K(+) efflux, the K(+) and HCO(3) (-) being cotransported out of the cell through specific channels. An alternative hypothesis which would yield similar results ...
