The objective of this work was to characterize the viability, production and morphology of pollen for different species in the genus Manihot. Floral buds from Manihot accessions were collected from two germplasm banks at Embrapa Cassava & Fruits. The viability of the pollen was assessed via colorimetric, in vitro and in vivo assays. The diameter of the pollen grains was determined by measuring the transversal length of the grain. The experimental design was entirely randomized. Studies on pollen ultrastructure ...

The main focus of several studies concerned with cancer progression and metastasis is to analyze the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to interact and quickly adapt with their environment. Integrins, a family of transmembrane glycoproteins, play a major role in invasive and metastatic processes. Integrins are involved in cell adhesion in both cell-extracellular matrix and cell-cell interactions, and particularly, β1 integrin is involved in proliferation and differentiation of cells in the development ...

In populations that have a high degree of admixture, such as in Brazil, the sole use of ethnicity self-declaration information is not a good method for classifying individuals regarding their ethnicity. Here, we evaluate the relationship of self-declared ethnicities with genomic ancestry and mitochondrial haplogroups in 492 individuals from southeastern Brazil. Mitochondrial haplogroups were obtained by analyzing the hypervariable regions of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and the genomic ancestry ...

Y haplogroups, defined by Y-SNPs, allow the reconstruction of the human Y chromosome genealogy, which is important for population, evolutionary and forensic genetics. In this study, Y-SNPs were typed and haplogroups inferred with the MPS Ion AmpliSeq™ HID Y-SNP Research Panel v1, as a high-throughput approach. Firstly, the performance of the panel was evaluated with different DNA input amounts, reagent volumes and cycle numbers. DNA-inputs from 0.5 to 1 ng generated the most balanced read depth. ...

Abstract Chemotherapy is a common treatment for leukemia. Ruthenium complexes have shown potential utility in chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. The identification of new chemotherapeutics agents is critical for further progress in the treatment of leukemia. Ruthenium complexes generally have lower toxicities compared to cisplatin attributed to their specific accumulation in cancer tissues. Based on these evidences, in the present work we studied the cytotoxic activity of the ruthenium(III) ...

Hepcidin plays a crucial role in iron metabolism, preventing its absorption at the basolateral enterocyte membrane. Hepcidin regulation is complex and regulated at the transcriptional level. The relation between iron overload and alcoholic liver disease is well known, but its mechanism is not clear. We present an observational, case-control study, aimed at evaluating the effects of alcohol on the expression of hepcidin in human participants. We intended to assess whether iron overload related to ...

Ruthenium(III) complexes are increasingly attracting the interest of researchers due to their promising pharmacological properties. In the present study, we investigated the ability of cis-(dichloro)tetrammineruthenium(III) chloride to produce lethal effects in human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cells. The MTT tetrazolium reduction test and the trypan blue exclusion assay revealed that the IC50 for the compound after 48 h of incubation with K562 cells was approximately 10.74 and 73.45 μM, respectively. ...

The emergence of resistance to antibiotics has become a global challenge as far as the control and treatment of nosocomial infections are concerned. Compared to the planktonic state, biofilms generally confer more resistance to antibiotics and may become a potential source of infection. Researchers are thus focused on developing novel drugs not as vulnerable as the current ones to bacterial resistance mechanisms and also able to target bacteria in biofilms. Natural products, especially those derived ...

Abstract Natural ecosystems are under severe threat worldwide and environmental policies are essential to minimize present and future impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate change. The New Forest Act in Brazil is the main policy to protect native vegetation in private lands, which comprise 54% of the remaining Brazilian native vegetation. However, conflicts between environmental and agricultural concerns in its implementation demand for balanced solutions based on scientific evidence. ...

Native vegetation in private lands plays an important role in providing ecosystem services and safeguarding biodiversity worldwide. Legal protection rules of this vegetation are thus crucial. In Brazil, since 1934, there has been a requirement for landowners to preserve a percentage of their land covered with native vegetation, the Legal Reserve. However, the 1934 legislation applies only to arboreal vegetation, while the protection of savannahs and grasslands begins after 1965 and 1989. The reference ...

Abstract Investigating non‐random assemblages emerging in response to environmental gradients is relevant to understand mechanisms and processes affecting biodiversity. Species may be filtered from fractions of environmental gradients that limit dispersal, survival or ontogenetic development, which ultimately leads to biotic complementarities among sites. Non‐random assemblages as a response to environmental filtering have been widely demonstrated in Amazonian forests, but are rarely assessed in ...
