Recent HIV/AIDS trends in the United States suggest a relative increase in HIV infections among women attributed to injection drug use or heterosexual contact.1 Although the biological risk of female-to-female sexually transmitted HIV is unknown, it is thought to be much lower than the risk of transmission between men and women, including instances in which a condom is used.2 However, studies focusing on women who have sex with women (WSW) have shown that some subgroups of WSW exhibit high levels ...

The present study investigated anticipation processes in L2 speech comprehension. French–Spanish late bilinguals were presented with high-constrained Spanish sentences. ERPs were time-locked on the article preceding the critical noun, which was muted to avoid overlapping effects. Articles that mis-matched the gender of the expected nouns triggered a negativity. A subsequent lexical recognition task revealed that words expected from the context were (falsely) recognised significantly more often than ...

Dengue is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease in the world. In this article we present results on the development, characterization and immunogenic evaluation of an alternative vaccine candidate against Dengue. The MWNT-DENV3E nanoconjugate was developed by covalent functionalization of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) with recombinant dengue envelope (DENV3E) proteins. The recombinant antigens were bound to the MWNT using a diimide-activated amidation process and the ...

We present a unique, extensive, and open synaptic physiology analysis platform and dataset. Through its application, we reveal principles that relate cell type to synaptic properties and intralaminar circuit organization in the mouse and human cortex. The dynamics of excitatory synapses align with the postsynaptic cell subclass, whereas inhibitory synapse dynamics partly align with presynaptic cell subclass but with considerable overlap. Synaptic properties are heterogeneous in most subclass-to- ...

Peach (Prunus persica var. laevis Gray) was chosen to unravel the molecular basis underlying the ability of spermidine (Sd) to influence fruit development and ripening. Field applications of 1 mM Sd on peach fruit at an early developmental stage, 41 days after full bloom (dAFB), i.e. at late stage S1, led to a slowing down of fruit ripening. At commercial harvest (125 dAFB, S4II) Sd-treated fruits showed a reduced ethylene production and flesh softening. The endogenous concentration of free and insoluble ...

The gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) is the causative agent of a wide variety of suppurative infections of cutaneous tissues. Previous analyses have demonstrated that the M protein of S. pyogenes is an adhesin that directs the attachment of the streptococcus to keratinocytes in the skin. In this study, we have examined keratinocyte function in response to S. pyogenes and found that adherent versus nonadherent streptococci promote distinct patterns of expression ...

Autoimmune diseases are an important field for the development of bone marrow transplantation, or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In Europe alone, almost 3000 procedures have been registered so far. The Brazilian Society for Bone Marrow Transplantation (Sociedade Brasileira de Transplantes de Medula Óssea) organized consensus meetings for the Autoimmune Diseases Group, to review the available literature on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for autoimmune diseases, aiming to gather ...

ntroductionTo cause disease, many fungal pathogens develop specialised structures to rupture the tough outer layers of their plant or animal hosts. These infection cells, called appressoria, have been extensively studied in many fungal species [1].However, once inside host tissue, pathogens must also invade new cells and traverse host cell junctions. How they do this has received much less attention, but recent evidence from the rice blast fungus suggests that cell invasion within a host plant may ...

To establish the identity of a prominent protein, approximately 70 kDa, that is markedly increased in the retina of monkeys with experimental glaucoma compared with the fellow control retina, the relationship to glaucoma severity, and its localization in the retina.Retinal extracts were subjected to 2-D gel electrophoresis to identify differentially expressed proteins. Purified peptides from the abundant 70 kDa protein were analyzed and identified by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass ...

Methanol synthesis from CO2 + H2 was studied at mild reaction conditions (140–250 °C and 7 bar) over Cu/ZnO catalysts prepared by citrate method. The copper content and calcination temperatures were varied so as to obtain a wide range in copper particle size (2–12 nm). Methanol formation rates vary between 0.84 and 2.98 × 10−3 s−1 at 180 °C. Methanol selectivity can attain 100% at temperatures lower than 160 °C. At higher temperatures, CO formation by reverse water gas shift reaction is highly favored. The ...
