In this paper, effect of annealing and O2 pressure on the structural and optical properties of pulsed laser deposited thin films of TiO2 is reported. XRD, FTIR spectra and SEM images confirm that at high annealing temperatures, the rutile phase and crystalline quality of thin films increases. Higher pressure of O2 during deposition improves the rutile phase and favors the rod like growth of TiO2 thin film. The red shift in photoluminescence (PL) spectra of TiO2 thin films with annealing temperature ...

In this paper, dependence of N2 pressure on the crystal structure and surface quality of AlN thin films deposited via pulsed laser ablation of Al target in the environment of N2 at room temperature is reported. The films were analyzed with AFM, SEM, XRD and FTIR for crystal structure and surface morphology. At higher N2 pressure, the orientation of AlN is (1 0 1) whereas at lower pressure (0 0 2) orientation was observed. The dependence of PL spectra of pulsed laser deposited AlN thin films on to ...

Abstract Background Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an invariably fatal central nervous system tumor despite treatment with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Further insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive GBM formation are required to improve patient outcome. MicroRNAs are emerging as important regulators of cellular differentiation and proliferation, and have been implicated in the etiology of a variety of cancers, yet the role of microRNAs in GBM remains poorly understood. ...

Pulsed laser induced breakdown at target-water interface is used to synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles. Ablation at defocused and tightly focused condition resulted in TiO2 nanoparticles in anatase and rutile phase respectively. In addition, insufficiently oxidized Ti2O3 nanoparticles are also observed due to transient quenching during laser induced breakdown process. The TiO2 nanoparticle phase and sizes are diagnosed using TEM. The optical properties are characterized using Raman and UV-Vis spectra. ...

Abstract: Epigenomes are comprised, in part, of all genome-wide chromatin modifications, including DNA methylation and histone modifications. Unlike the genome, epigenomes are dynamic during development and differentiation to establish and maintain cell type–specific gene expression states that underlie cellular identity and function. Chromatin modifications are particularly labile, providing a mechanism for organisms to respond and adapt to environmental cues. Results from studies in animal models ...

Abstract Pulsed laser induced plasma in water produces multiple bubbles with the passage of laser pulse. Shadowgraphy and beam deflection set-up is used to study the temporal and spatial evolution of these bubbles as a function of distance from the laser focus. The formation of multiple bubbles, bubble coalescence, and their effect onto cavity dynamics is reported. Bubble radius and the corresponding velocities from shadowgraphy is used to calculate the maximum gas pressure inside the bubble using ...

DNA methylation plays an important role in the maintenance of cell identity through its effect on gene expression. Methylation of 5′ promoters is known to suppress gene expression, while the role of intragenic DNA methylation — where methylation occurs within the body of a gene itself — has been less extensively studied and remains controversial. A map of DNA methylation from the human brain has now been constructed with unprecedented coverage using next-generation sequencing. Integration of this map ...

Abstract E-cadherin (E-cad) is a transmembrane adhesion glycoprotein, the expression of which is often reduced in invasive or metastatic tumors. To assess E-cad's distribution among different types of cancer cells, we used bisulfite-sequencing for detailed, base-by-base measurement of CpG methylation in E-cad's promoter region in the NCI-60 cell lines. The mean methylation levels of the cell lines were distributed bimodally, with values pushed toward either the high or low end of the methylation ...

The spatial and temporal evolution of laser-induced shock waves at a titanium-water interface was analyzed using a beam deflection setup. The focusing conditions of the source laser were varied, and its effect onto the dynamics of shock waves was elucidated. For a tightly focused condition, the speed of the shock wave was ~6.4 Km/s, whereas for a defocused condition the velocities reduced to <3 km/s at the vicinity of the titanium-water interface. When the laser is focused a few millimeters above ...
