Within Atrichornis the two species A. clamosus and A. rujescens are very similar overall, differing only in characters related to flightlessness, with A. clamosus appearing more volant than A. rujescens. Similarly, the two species within Menura are very similar overall, although M. novaehollandiae may be a stronger flyer than M. alberti. There are many differences between the genera Atrichornis and Menura, but the distribution of these character states across the order Passeriformes remains unstudied. ...

Although the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of primary pulmonary hypertension have not yet been delineated, thrombosis has been implicated. This study was designed to determine whether thrombin activity as reflected by plasma concentrations of fibrinopeptide A (FPA), a marker of the action of thrombin on fibrinogen, is increased in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension. To evaluate fibrinolytic activity, we measured plasma concentrations of tissue-type plasminogen activator, plasminogen ...

Major depression (MD) is common in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Some of these patients have a history of prior depressive episodes, whereas others experience their first episode around the same time that their CAD is diagnosed. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are systematic differences between these two subgroups of depressed patients. Of 39 patients with recently diagnosed CAD who met DSM-III-R criteria for MD, 17 (44%) had a prior history of MD. This subgroup ...

Inorganic arsenic (In-As) is an established human carcinogen. Methylation to monomethylarsonate (MMA) and dimethylarsinate (DMA) is believed to be the detoxification mechanism for In-As. Urinary measurement of In-As, MMA, and DMA is considered a good biological marker of internal dose to In-As, since it excludes other ingested forms of arsenic which are much less toxic, and because urinary excretion is the main form of elimination of In-As. A methylation threshold hypothesis for In-As has been proposed, ...

We conducted a two-phase clinical trial in patients with progressive malignant glioma (MG). The first phase of this trial was designed to determine the dose of O6-BG effective in producing complete depletion of tumor AGT activity for 48 hours. The second phase of the trial was designed to define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a single dose of temozolomide when combined with O6-BG. In addition, plasma concentrations of O6-BG and O6-benzyl-8-oxoguanine were evaluated after O6-BG.For our first phase ...

Abstract Purpose: We have reported previously that tumors expressing wild-type epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in a murine model are sensitive to the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor gefitinib, whereas tumors expressing mutant EGFR variant III (EGFRvIII) are resistant. Determination of how this differential inhibition occurs may be important to patient selection and treatment criteria, as well as the design of future therapeutics for glioblastoma multiforme. Experimental Design: We have determined ...

Depression is highly prevalent in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and is associated with excess medical morbidity and mortality. This article reviews the mechanisms which may mediate the relationship between depression and cardiac events in these patients. Research in this area is at an early stage of development. However, there is evidence that altered autonomic tone, smoking, hypertension, and, at least in older patients, poor adherence to the cardiac treatment regimen may be responsible ...

A fundamental premise of river management is that practitioners understand the resource they are working with. In river management this requires that baseline information is available on the structure, function, health and trajectory of rivers. Such information provides the basis to contextualise, to plan, to be proactive, to prioritise, to set visions, to set goals and to undertake objective, pragmatic, transparent and evidence-based decision making. In this paper we present the State-wide NSW ...
