Allen Osman, Lianggang Lou, Hiltraut Müller‐Gethmann, Gerhard Rinkenauer, Stefan Mattes, Rolf Ulrich,
Speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT) refers to the inverse relation between speed and accuracy found in many tasks. The present study employed reaction times (RTs) and movement-related brain potentials arising during the RT interval (lateralized readiness potentials; LRPs) to examine the mechanisms by which people control their position along an SAT continuum. Many models of SAT postulate that changes in position across conditions (macro-tradeoffs) and trial-by-trial variations within conditions (micro-tradeoffs) ...

Onset of a movement-related brain potential (lateralized readiness potential, LRP) was used to divide reaction time (RT) into two intervals: (1) stimulus onset to LRP onset, and (2) LRP onset to onset of the overt response. Effects on these intervals of advance information about the to-be-signaled response and of the mapping between fingers and response buttons were examined. These effects were used to reach conclusions about the organization of response preparation and about the identity of the processes ...

Any mentally competent adult has the right to give or refuse consent to treatment or nursing intervention. The ethical principle underpinning this free choice is respect for autonomy, and the nurse’s professional duty to respect the decision of the patient is enshrined within the NMC’s Code of Conduct (NMC, 2008). Capacity is paramount to consent and problems arise in practice when the patient is deemed to lack capacity. In this instance, the provisions of the code of practice of the Mental Capacity ...

Two commercially available biochemical test systems were evaluated for their ability to accurately identify species of the genus Escherichia . Three laboratories participated in the study. The test kits did not always correctly identify species of Escherichia , but only once was an isolate misidentified as Escherichia coli . These results and the reactions of the isolates on media normally used for drinking water analysis are discussed.

Total daily caloric intake was measured in 10 obese subjects when sucrose polyester (SPE), a nonabsorbable synthetic fat, covertly replaced conventional fats in a single crossover study consisting of three periods: a period of 7 to 14 days to determine baseline caloric intake and two 20-day study periods. An average of 60 g SPE/day replaced conventional fat in one of the two study periods. During both study periods, 60% of the base line caloric intake was "required intake" at mealtime; an additional ...

It is very convenient for staff at care homes to conceal drugs in the food and drink of residents, not for therapeutic ...
