In this work, we study the rheology of hydrate slurries in a mixture of water and THF (tetrahydrofuran, C4H8O). This hydrocarbon is miscible in water, and forms hydrates at ambient pressure and temperatures above 0 °C. Rheological tests, constant shear rate, flow curve, creep, and oscillatory, are carried out for different concentrations. Transient and steady-state results are obtained, suggesting that the rheology is strongly affected by agglomeration and breakage of hydrate crystals that seem to ...

In the oil industry, gas hydrates formed during oil and gas production are one of the main issues in flow assurance. In extreme conditions of high pressure and low temperature found in ultradeep oil wells, hydrates crystals can form, agglomerate, and accumulate in the flowlines. Moreover, hydrates can be used for energy storage and chemical separation, such as seawater desalination. As such, understanding the onset of hydrate formation, its growth, and its behavior under shear are of great interest. ...

Abstract Introduction Contemporary information on mechanical ventilation (MV) use in emerging countries is limited. Moreover, most epidemiological studies on ventilatory support were carried out before significant developments, such as lung protective ventilation or broader application of non-invasive ventilation (NIV). We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for hospital mortality and failure of NIV in patients requiring ventilatory support in Brazilian intensive ...

Fibrosis is the main cause of irreversible nerve damage in leprosy. Phenotypic changes in Mycobacterium leprae (ML)-infected Schwann cells (SCs) have been suggested to mediate this process. We found that SC line cultures stimulated with ML upregulated transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and that TGF-β1 or ML induced increased numbers of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA)-positive cells with characteristic stress fibers. Mycobacterium leprae and TGF-β1 also induced increased type I collagen and fibronectin ...

Background Heart transplantation is a valuable therapeutic option for Chagas disease patients with severe cardiomyopathy. During patient follow-up, the differential diagnosis between cardiac transplant rejection and Chagas disease infection reactivation remains a challenging task, which hinders rapid implementation of the appropriate treatment. Herein we investigate whether polymerase chain reaction (PCR) strategies could facilitate early detection of Trypanosoma cruzi (T cruzi) in transplanted endomyocardial ...

The current study assessed the biochemical alterations induced in the clam species Ruditapes philippinarum after exposure to salinity shifts (14, 28 and 42) and arsenic (As) contamination (0 and 2 mg/L). The capacity of this species to recover (96 h and 28 days) after exposure (96 h) to both stressors, acting alone and in combination, was also evaluated. After exposure, regardless of the salinity tested, clams contaminated with As showed higher concentrations than non-contaminated specimens. After recovery, ...

One of the most common and critical inorganic deposition inside flowlines in the oil and gas industry is related to gas hydrates, which are crystalline water-based solids, formed in conditions of high pressure and low temperatures. In this work, experiments are carried out to analyze ethane gas hydrate formation in water-in-model oil emulsions, through a rheological analysis based on the variation of pressure, shear rate and water cut, using the vane and concentric cylinder geometries. High pressure ...

Transient operations in oil and gas production can result in conditions with a high potential for the formation of hydrate plugs. In restart operations, the shear flow and the increased pressure can induce rapid hydrate formation possibly leading to a plug or severe flow reduction. In order to study favorable and unfavorable restart conditions, experiments were performed in a high pressure cell coupled to a rheometer. Hydrate slurry behavior was investigated under transient conditions. Experiments ...

Ultraviolet (UV) filters are widely used in personal care products and due to their lipophilicity these chemicals tend to bioaccumulate in the aquatic biota. 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) is one of the most used UV-filters, and it is commonly detected in freshwater fish tissues. This substance is suspected to be an endocrine disruptor due to its interaction with Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) and HP-Thyroid (HPT)-axis. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 4-MBC ...

In offshore oil production, scheduled or emergency shutdowns of the production system may occur due to maintenance, equipment failure, production issues, and weather-related events. During the shut-in, the fluids may enter into the hydrate zone because of the thermal energy transfer to the cold ocean waters, increasing the risk of hydrate formation during the shut-in period and upon the restart of the production system. This work is focused on identifying some parameters that influence the hydrate ...

The application of nano-structured compounds has been increasing rapidly in recent years, in several fields. The use of engineered nano-materials as carriers of antifouling compounds is just beginning and already reveals clear advantages compared to bulk active compounds, such as slowed and controlled release, novel functionality, and high loading capacity. This present study assesses the antifouling efficacy of two nanostructured materials, spherical mesoporous silica nanocapsules (SiNC) and Zn- ...

Recently, new technologies have been combined to improve quality and sensorial diversity of wine. Several fining agents were developed to induce flocculation and sedimentation of particulate matter in wine, enhancing its clarification and stabilization. The fining agents most commonly used are animal proteins, such as milk casein or egg albumin. However, its use is being related to food intolerance. To overcome this issue, alternative sources should be explored for use in industrial processes. In ...
