Tannins are well-known food polyphenols that interact with proteins, namely, salivary proteins. This interaction is an important factor in relation to their bioavailability and is considered the basis of several important properties of tannins, namely, the development of astringency. It has been generally accepted that astringency is due to the tannin-induced complexation and/or precipitation of salivary proline-rich proteins (PRPs) in the oral cavity. However, this complexation is thought to provide ...

The mechanical pretreatments intensities on characteristics of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) prior to acid hydrolysis was evaluated. The cellulose was submitted to mechanical pretreatment as: magnetic stirring (CNCst), blending (CNCbl) or grinding by 20 (CNC20x) and 40 (CNC40x) passages in a super mass colloid mill. Then, all samples were submitted to H2SO4 hydrolysis and the CNC were evaluated by total mass yield (TMY%), rheological behavior, size distribution for width/length (WD), crystallinity index ( ...

Mucilage extracted from leaves of Pereskia aculeata, popularly called Barbados gooseberry (or ora-pro-nobis in Brazil), was investigated in terms of structural, chemical and physical-chemical properties. The mucilage was obtained with a new method using water at room temperature. Analysis of polysaccharide by GC-MS and NMR techniques showed the presence of galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, fucose and partially esterified galacturonic acid, whose main chain consisted of β-d-galactose linked (1 → 4), partially ...

Antioxidant enzymes, total antioxidant capacity (TOSC) and concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured in anterior (A), middle (M) and posterior (P) body regions of Laeonereis acuta after copper (Cu; 62.5 μg/l) exposure. A catalase (CAT) activity gradient observed in control group (lowest in A, highest in P) was not observed in Cu exposed group. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in A region of Cu group was higher than in A region of the control group. DNA damage (comet assay) was augmented ...

Bacterial cellulose (BC) derived materials represents major advances to the current regenerative and diagnostic medicine. BC is a highly pure, biocompatible and versatile material that can be utilized in several applications - individually or in the combination with different components (e.g. biopolymers and nanoparticles) - to provide structural organization and flexible matrixes to distinct finalities. The wide application and importance of BC is described by its common utilization as skin repair treatments ...

Methylmercury (MeHg) is an important toxicant that causes cognitive dysfunctions in humans. This study aimed to investigate the proteomic and biochemical alterations of the hippocampus associated with behavioural consequences of low doses of MeHg in a long-term exposure model, and to realistically mimic in vivo the result of human exposure to this toxicant. Adult Wistar male rats were exposed to a dose of MeHg at 0.04 mg kg-1 day-1 by gavage for 60 days. Total mercury (Hg) content was significantly ...

Trace metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr and Cu) were determined in some benthic algae from Sepetiba Bay, Brazil. This region has been modified by the increase of industrial activities during the last 30 years. Among species sampled the brown algae Padina gymnospora contained the greatest amount of Zn. The Bioconcentration Factor for Zn in P. gymnospora was found to be 10(4) under laboratory conditions. The absorption of (65)Zn depended on exposure time and increased with Zn concentrations in the ...

The II Brazilian Consensus Conference on Mechanical Ventilation was published in 2000. Knowledge on the field of mechanical ventilation evolved rapidly since then, with the publication of numerous clinical studies with potential impact on the ventilatory management of critically ill patients. Moreover, the evolving concept of evidence - based medicine determined the grading of clinical recommendations according to the methodological value of the studies on which they are based. This explicit approach ...

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic metal, which can be found in its inorganic form in the environment. This form presents lower liposolubility and lower absorption in the body. In order to elucidate the possible toxicity of inorganic Hg in the hippocampus, we investigated the potential of low doses of mercury chloride (HgCl2) to promote hippocampal dysfunction by employing a chronic exposure model. For this, 56 rats were exposed to HgCl2 (0.375 mg/kg/day) via the oral route for 45 days. After the exposure ...

Curcumin, along with its derivatives, form a large class of natural and synthetic compounds with notable biological activity. However, their highly reactive β-diketone moiety renders this type of compounds unstable at pH above 6.5. The substitution of this group for a mono-carbonyl solves this problem, while improving antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. A thiophene curcuminoid, (1E,4E)-1,5-Di(thiophen-2-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DB Thiophene), has been synthesised and its molecular and ...

Resumo Este trabalho discute elementos conformadores de instabilidade financeira em países em desenvolvimento, buscando evidenciar mecanismos de incentivo que condicionam o comportamento dos diferentes setores presentes nas economias ao longo dos ciclos. PURPOSE: To analyze mortality (7 days) or graft loss in liver transplantation (Tx) performed within the Awakening Protocol (AP) compared to sequential Tx. METHODS: Analysis of 243 liver tx (230 patients), divided into sequential tx or PD (early morning) to compare graft loss or death (7 days). Significant differences at p <0.05 RESULTS: The PD was adopted in 32.5% of tx. The cold ischemia time (p <0.01) and the interval until transplantation (p <0.01) were significantly different. Age of the donor and recipient, ...

Several vegetation indices (VIs) have been proposed in the literature with the objective of exploring the spectral properties of the vegetation as they are usually related to biophysical parameters of the plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between VIs, obtained in two different RPAS platforms (Remotely-piloted spacecraft system) and proximity system at different corm growth stages with the nitrogen (N) nutritional status in the plant. Five treatments with different ...

Francielly Freitas,
