It is well-known, both theoretically and experimentally, that alloying MgH(2) with transition elements can significantly improve the thermodynamic and kinetic properties for H(2) desorption, as well as the H(2) intake by Mg bulk. Here, we present a density functional theory investigation of hydrogen dissociation and surface diffusion over a Ni-doped surface and compare the findings to previously investigated Ti-doped Mg(0001) and pure Mg(0001) surfaces. Our results show that the energy barrier for ...

The structure of the cubic polymorph of magnesium tetrahydroborate (γ-Mg(BH4)2) has been determined in space group Iad from a structural database of the isoelectronic compound SiO2; this has been corroborated by DFT calculations. The structure is found to concur with that recently determined by Filinchuk et al. (Y. Filinchuk, B. Richter, T. R. Jensen, V. Dmitriev, D. Chernyshov and H. Hagemann, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2011, DOI: 10.1002/anie.201100675). The phase transformations and subsequent decomposition ...

Using the assessment of the mitochondrial metabolic activity of freshly isolated blood mononuclear cells, the flow cytometric detection of apoptosis and of the proliferative responses to PWM, SIV-infected macaques were classified in: stage 0, which included all animals with unaffected parameters, and stages 1, 2, and 3, which included animals having one, two, or all three parameters affected, respectively. This novel three-parametric staging system (ISS) provides a new prognostic tool in the longitudinal ...

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the nature of the active form of gold in oxide-supported gold catalysts for the water gas shift reaction has been performed. In situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments have shown that in the fresh catalysts the gold is in the form of highly dispersed gold ions. However, under water gas shift reaction conditions, even at temperatures as low as 100 °C, the evidence from ...

Mixed matrix membranes were synthesized from poly(amide-b-ethylene oxide) (PEBAX MH1657) and zeolite 13X by a solvent casting method for CO2/N2 separation. The gas permeation properties of neat PEBAX membranes and 5, 10 and 15%(wt.) 13X loadings were determined for pure CO2 and N2 via constant volume – variable pressure method. An increase in CO2 permeability was observed with increasing loading of 13X. The greatest CO2/N2 selectivity of 47 was observed at the maximum loading. Results possibly suggest ...

A Round Robin Test exercise on magnesium hydride (MgH2) was performed by 14 laboratories with the aim to compare experimental isothermal data such PCI curves, kinetics curves and formation enthalpies together with a basic statistical evaluation of the results. The full hydrogen capacity was found to vary in the range 5.1–6.4 wt.% at 280 °C (553 K) and in the range 5.3–6.6 wt.% at 320 °C (593 K) (value for 1 MPa hydrogen pressure). The relative standard deviations of 6.9% and 7.2%, respectively, were measured ...

The aim of this study was to analyze the structural validity of a new assessment tool of self-regulated learning (Assessment Inventory of Self-Regulated Learning from Texts −ARATEX), developed based on this theory. The results from confirmatory factor analysis supported a smaller version of that ...

The main aim of this study is to analyze how training in self-regulated learning strategies is related to improvements in knowledge of those strategies, self-efficacy in using those strategies, their perceived usefulness, and their effective use in academic learning tasks. Chemical looping reforming (CLR) is a promising technology for syngas production combining autothermal operation with integrated CO2 capture. At large scale, reformer outlet pressure during syngas production is an important factor for the overall plant's process efficiency and defines the energy requirements for downstream processing. Packed bed reactors are widely used and established in industry for high pressure operating conditions due to their robust and, compared to other reactor types, simpler ...

HyStorM is a multidisciplinary hydrogen-storage project aiming to synthesise and tune materials hydrogen storage properties for automotive applications. Firstly, unique high-throughput combinatorial thin-film technologies are used to screen materials' hydrogen storage properties. Then promising thin-film candidate compositions are synthesised and examined in the bulk. In this paper, we report on our results within the ternary compositions Mg–Ti–B and Ca–Ti–B. Primary screening of the Mg–Ti–B ternary ...

Ce(IV) pyrochlore oxides have been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the parent material, a sodium cerium titanate, has been studied using total neutron scattering. While analysis of Bragg diffraction is consistent with an average cubic pyroclore structure, the profile is broadened because of the crystal size of <10 nm. Analysis of the pair distribution function (PDF) produced by Fourier transformation of the total scattering yields a structural model consistent with formulation of the parent ...

Carbon-negative and neutral methods to produce H2 and other syngas-derived chemicals are tested and demonstrated in this study through chemical looping reforming of methane or glycerol. A chemical looping reactor provides the heat required to reform the glycerol or methane while having inherent CO2 capture. This is achieved using dynamically operated packed beds. If the glycerol or methane is from a biological source this gives the system the potential for negative emissions. To evaluate the potential ...

The reactor was packed with 355 g of Cu-based oxygen carrier (OC) supported on Al2O3 and natural Ca-based sorbent. The three main reaction stages; namely (i) Calcium Assisted Steel-mill Off-gas Hydrogen (CASOH), (ii) Cu oxidation and (iii) Regeneration of ...

In recent years there has been an increase in interest in the study of model Ziegler-Natta catalysts used for the polymerisation of ethene and propene. Particular attention has focused on catalysts consisting of TiCl4 on activated MgCl2 accompanied by a co-catalyst, usually triethylaluminium (AlEt3). As part of a wider project on the characterisation of model Ziegler-Natta catalysts we have investigated the interaction of TiCl4 with metallic Mg films grown on a An surface using X-ray photoelectron ...

The three main reaction stages of the process (i.e. H2 production via calcium-assisted water-gas-shift of BFG, Cu oxidation and CO2 sorbent regeneration) have been investigated in a lab-scale fixed bed reactor, using readily available functional materials (i.e. a commercial Cu-based catalyst ...
