The aim of this study was to clarify the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor (VEGFR) pathways in thyroid tumourigenesis. We examined VEGF, VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 expression on 34 papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs), 18 follicular thyroid carcinomas (FTCs), eight poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTCs) and on a thyroid tumour-derived cell line (NPA'87) by immunohistochemistry, reverse transcriptase PCR, immunofluorescence and Western blotting. We have demonstrated that ...

BackgroundLeukaemias comprise a heterogenous group of haematological malignancies. In CONCORD-3, we analysed data for children (aged 0–14 years) and adults (aged 15–99 years) diagnosed with a haematological malignancy during 2000–14 in 61 countries. Here, we aimed to examine worldwide trends in survival from leukaemia, by age and morphology, in young patients (aged 0–24 years).MethodsWe analysed data from 258 population-based cancer registries in 61 countries participating in CONCORD-3 that submitted ...

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermosonication (TS) on tangerine juice using an ultrasonic bath (US, 35 kHz, 750 W) at 50°C/5 min, 50°C/10 min, 60°C/5 min, and 60°C/10 min, besides juice pasteurized at 85°C/5 min as control. The TS increased the titratable acidity, total soluble solids, and improved the juice homogeneity (p ≤ .05), with discreet changes in the color parameters (L*, chroma, and hue). The treatment at 60°C was more effective against microbial growth, regardless of the processing ...

Design/methodology/approach The consumer usage frequency pattern concerning the main bank delivery channels and its determinants are modelled and analysed with a questionnaire sent to 24,000 bank customers. This stage was preceded by ...

Oral drug delivery is the most common route of drug administration. Nevertheless, there are some important limitations that reinforce the need for developing new drug delivery systems. Mucoadhesive oral films (MOF) are promising dosage forms that adhere to the oral mucosa and deliver the drug through it, which present several advantages. These include: bypassing the hepatic first pass effect, fast onset of action, ease of transportation and handling. The use of such dosage form is beneficial for ...

A study has been carried out in the centre-east area of Corsica (altitude 850 m a. s. l.) in three goat herds (Corsican local breed) browsing a Mediterranean shrubland without any additional feed supply. The practical usefulness of BCS and metabolic profile in order to assess the nutritional conditions of goats during the milking period (80 to 120 days of lactation) was investigated on a sample of 18 goats selected in each herd. BCS, metabolic profile, and milk yield/quality were individually measured. ...

Despite the existing vast literature on corporate social responsibility (CSR), there is a lack of research on the determinants of CSR categories – environment, employees, community, and governance. Why do some firms dedicate more effort to community, while others focus on environment or employees? We address these issues with special attention to the roles of market structure and firm size, controlling for industry, geography, regulatory and macroeconomic variables. Answers are relevant for firms' ...

The phenolic compounds present in 29 samples of olive fruits were analysed by reversed-phase HPLC/DAD and/or HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS/MS. All samples were collected during the normal picking period for olive oil production, in north and central Portugal, and were obtained from 18 different olive cultivars. Two different extraction methods were necessary for the complete quantification of phenolic compounds, a methanolic extraction and an extraction which included a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleaning step. ...

Successful management of HIV infection as a chronic condition has resulted in a demographic shift where the proportion of people living with HIV (PLWH) older than 50 years is steadily increasing. A dedicated clinic to PLWH older than 50 years was established at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in January 2009 and then extended to HIV services across the directorate. We report the results of a service evaluation reviewing 10 years of activities of this clinic between January 2009 and 2019. We aimed ...

Abstract This paper focuses on the quality level choice, emphasising and formally showing the complete role of market structure and strategic interaction between firms on this choice. Historically, the most used model supporting the quality decision is the prevention-appraisal-failure model, which is based solely on the minimisation of the cost of quality. However, as is well known, the quality decision should follow from profit maximisation, thus leading to a higher quality level than the one derived ...

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTC) represent a heterogeneous, aggressive entity, presenting features that suggest a progression from well-differentiated carcinomas. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying such progression and identify novel therapeutic targets, we assessed the genome-wide expression in normal and tumour thyroid tissues.Microarray analyses of 24 thyroid carcinomas - 7 classic papillary, 8 follicular variants of papillary (fvPTC), 4 follicular (FTC) and 5 PDTC - were performed ...

The diagnosis of parathyroid carcinomas is often difficult. HRPT2 mutations have been identified in familial [hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome] and sporadic parathyroid carcinomas, supporting that HRPT2 mutations may confer a malignant potential to parathyroid tumors. In this study, we report the clinical, histopathological, and genetic investigation of two unrelated cases, whom had apparently sporadic malignant parathyroid tumors, initially diagnosed as adenomas. In one case, the differential ...

: As a consequence of ageing, the number of prescribed medications for people living with HIV is increasing. Concomitant use of different drugs and their potential interactions may increase anticholinergic exposure and escalate the risk for side effects. We conducted an analysis in our cohort of people living with HIV over 50 years of age to evaluate the overall anticholinergic risk, as it is useful to identify, prevent, and manage increased side effect risks.

The phenolic profiles were determined by HPLC/UV and antioxidant properties were studied for their ability to quench the stable free radical 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and to inhibit the 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative ...
