SUMMARY In human hosts and in murine models, the immune response to Strongyloides spp. is Th2 type. In addition, the profile of the host immune response follows various symptoms induced by Strongyloides spp. In the present study, we demonstrated that the L2 and L49 strains of Strongyloides venezuelensis obtained from Bolomys lasiurus and Nectomys squamipes induced significant and similar increases in eosinophil/mononuclear cell counts in the blood, peritoneal cavity fluid and bronchoalveolar lavage ...

Abstract It is clear that leukotrienes mediate inflammatory response; new aspects of leukotriene function have recently been described. In this study, we demonstrate that leukotrienes are key chemical mediators in the control of parasite burdens in mice infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis. High leukotriene levels were detected in the lungs and small intestines of Swiss mice. In infected Swiss mice treated with MK886, a leukotriene synthesis inhibitor, numbers of adult worms, and eggs/g/feces ...

The present research investigated the influence of temperature and time of larvae culture on the infectivity of Strongyloides venezuelensis. Mice were infected s.c. with 1500 larvae of S. venezuelensis maintained at 28 °C for three days of culture (dc), 28 °C for seven dc or 18 °C for seven dc. On days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 post-infection the animals were sacrificed and cell numbers in the blood, peritoneal cavity fluid (PCF), broncoalveolar fluid (BALF), cytokines, immunoglobulins, number of parasites ...

Importance Patient empowerment through pharmacologic self-management is a common strategy for some chronic diseases such as diabetes, but it is rarely used for controlling blood pressure (BP). Several trials have shown its potential for reducing BP in the short term, but evidence in the longer term is scarce. Objective To evaluate the longer-term effectiveness of BP self-monitoring plus self-titration of antihypertensive medication vs usual care for patients with poorly controlled hypertension, with ...

Abstract: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) is the lead effector of atherosclerosis and main treatment target. Bempedoic acid is a novel oral drug in the therapeutic armamentarium which is able to reduce LDLc. The objectives of this study were (1) to select the potential patients for administering bempedoic acid such as those with a very high cardiovascular risk in which objectives of LDLc were not achieved despite conventional treatment with PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) and/or statins and ezetimibe ...

Aníbal Barreira,

A search for information was put in practise in several schools in Oporto and its sur- roundings, in order to compare what students of the 9th form think over History, its contents, resources, classroom performing, evaluation and tools for learning. Though it deals with a sample (175 students) their answers make possible to come to some conclusions, which, combined with some other recent studies about Portuguese and European students, can help us to understand their interests and to adapt the method ...

Despite the increased use of blood pressure (BP) monitoring devices at home, the hypertension of more than 50% of European patients remains uncontrolled. Nevertheless, the self-management of BP, through the combination of home monitoring of BP with self-titration, could be anaccessible and effective tool for improving hypertension control in the primary care setting. The ADAMPA study is a trial with participants randomised to BP self-management (BPSM) with self-titration of antihypertensive medication ...

Lack of control of hypertension is one of the most prevalent problems encountered by general practitioners (GPs). Self-measured blood pressure monitoring at home (SMBP) and self-titration of medication could be a good strategy to improve hypertension management, however, evidence is limited and not conclusive. We aimed to assess the effectiveness, in the primary care setting, of an intervention that includes educational components, SMBP and self-titration of antihypertensive medication to decrease ...

Abstract Background Extended totally extraperitoneal ventral hernia repair (eTEP-VHR) is gaining increasing popularity due to its improved postoperative outcomes. Recent evidence suggests that minimally invasive retromuscular dissection and mesh placement has better outcomes than other mesh positions, lowering the rates of hernia recurrence and surgical site occurrences. We present the initial results from eTEP-VHR implementation at two non-robotic surgical departments. Method Retrospective analysis ...

Abstract Introduction Surgical repair of recurrent abdominal incisional hernia can be challenging. The aim should be a tension-free, mesh reinforced midline fascial closure. Different methods have been described to achieve this primary fascial closure. Botulinum toxin (BT) is a neurotoxin that when injected into muscle tissue, causes a temporary flaccid muscle paralysis. This effect can be applied to the lateral abdominal wall muscles, thereby facilitating midline rectus muscles re-approximation ...
