Concrete properties can be improved by various additives. Nowadays there is a strong interest concerning the use of spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst (SFCC) as an admixture to improve mechanical properties of concrete. This work aims at studying the corrosion resistance of steel rebars in SFCC modified mortar specimens. Results of physicochemical characterization indicate the acceleration of cement hydration due to pozzolanic activity of SFCC. Electrochemical measurements show that the addition ...

This article examines the combustion regimes occurring in a small-scale laboratory cylindrical combustor, in which the burner and the exhaust port are mounted at the top end of the combustion chamber. Flue-gas composition data and hydroxyl radical chemiluminescence (OH*) imaging are presented as a function of the air inlet preheat temperature and excess air coefficient, which in the present configuration implies also changes in the air inlet velocity. For three of these combustor operating conditions, ...

The proton electrochemical gradient generated by respiratory chain activity accounts for over 90% of all available ATP and, as such, its evaluation and accurate measurements regarding its total values and fluctuations is an invaluable component in the understanding of mitochondrial functions. Consequently, alterations in electric potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane generated by differential protonic accumulations and transport are known as the mitochondrial membrane potential, or Δψ, ...

Metformin is the most used biguanide drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Despite being mostly known for its hepatic anti-gluconeogenic effect, it is also known to modulate microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) associated with metabolic diseases. The latter mechanism could be relevant for better understanding metformin’s mechanisms underlying its biological effects. In the current work, we found that metformin increases miR-378a-3p expression (p < 0.002) in C2C12 myoblasts previously exposed to hyperglycemic ...

This study analyzes uses of social networks by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at the Algarve region in Portugal. Results suggest that some firms have integrated their business strategies with social networks, and have groups of professionals responsible for these platforms. Most managers perceive that social networks enhance business performance, but few measure the results. Firms that most frequently use social networks have managers with higher qualifications. This study identified two ...

Bile acids (BA) have shown promising effects in animal models of obesity. However, the said effects are thought to rely on a thermogenic effect, which is questionably present in humans. A previous work has shown that the BA chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) can revert obesity and accelerate metabolism in animal and cell culture models. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand if this obesity reduction is indeed thermogenically-dependent. A CRISPR/Cas9 model of TGR5 (BA receptor) knockdown in 3T3-L1 ...

Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a leading cause of organ dysfunction and failure in numerous pathological and surgical settings. At the core of this issue lies mitochondrial dysfunction. Hence, strategies that prime mitochondria towards damage resilience might prove applicable in a clinical setting. A promising approach has been to induce a mitohormetic response, removing less capable organelles, and replacing them with more competent ones, in preparation for an insult. Recently, a soluble ...

The iatrogenic risk of HIV vertical transmission, calculated in initial epidemiologic studies, seemed to counterindicate invasive prenatal diagnosis (PND) procedures. The implementation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) represented a turning point in PND management, owing to a rapid and effective reduction of maternal viral load (VL). In the present study, we identified cases of vertical transmission in HIV-infected pregnant women who did amniocentesis in the second trimester of pregnancy (), ...

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy. Its incidence has been reported to be 1 case in from 15 000 to 18 000 live births, or approximately 12, 6, or 4 cases per 1 million children younger than 5, 10, or 15 years, respectively.1,2 The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of retinoblastoma across European countries within a 1-year time frame. Data were collected through an international, multicenter, 1-year cross-sectional analysis that has been described in detail previously.

We also explored the dependence of local shredder diversity on the regional species pool across latitudes, and examined the influence of environmental factors on shredder diversity. Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common ocular neoplasm in children, whose development depends on two mutational events that occur in both alleles of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene (RB1). Regarding the nature of these mutational events, RB can be classified as hereditary if the first event is a germline mutation and the second one is a somatic mutation in retina cells or nonhereditary if both mutational events occur in somatic cells. Although the rate of survival of RB is significantly elevated, ...
