NPY is present in the retina of different species but its role is not elucidated yet. In this work, using different rat retina in vitro models (whole retina, retinal cells in culture, microglial cell cultures, rat Müller cell line and retina endothelial cell line), we demonstrated that NPY staining is present in the retina in different cell types: neurons, macroglial, microglial and endothelial cells. Retinal cells in culture express NPY Y1, Y2, Y4 and Y5 receptors. Retina endothelial cells express ...

The reconstruction of facial surgical defects is usually challenging for the dermatologic surgeon. Three different cases of facial defects in which tunneled island flaps were used are reported. In 2 cases, wide defects involving the nasal dorsum and ala were repaired using a nasolabial island flap tunneled through the lateral side of the nose. A tunneled island glabellar flap was used for medial canthus reconstruction in the third case. Despite complex pedicle dissection and frequent trapdoor deformation, ...

Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs, followed by antibiotics, are the main causes of fixed drug eruption. They provoke one or several round erythematous or bullous lesions that recur in the same place after taking the causative medication. A positive patch test on residual, lesional skin can replace satisfactorily oral reintroduction. We describe the case of a 74-year-old woman with numerous, rounded, erythematous lesions on the trunk and recurrent blistering on the fifth right-hand finger, which ...

We report on highly efficient organic phototransistors (OPTs) based on thin-film/single-crystal planar bilayer junctions between 5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene (rubrene) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). The OPTs show good field-effect characteristics in the dark, with high hole-mobility (4–5 cm2 V−1 s−1), low-contact resistance (20 kΩ cm), and low-operating voltage (≤5 V). Excellent sensing capabilities allow for light detection in the 400–750 nm range, with photocurrent/dark current ...

Abstract. The study of spatial presence is currently receiving increased attention in both media psychology and communication research. The present paper introduces the Spatial Presence Experience Scale (SPES), a short eight-item self-report measure. The SPES is derived from a process model of spatial presence ( Wirth et al., 2007 , Media Psychology, 9, 493–525), and assesses spatial presence as a two-dimensional construct that comprises a user’s self-location and perceived possible actions in a media ...

Hierarchical structures, constituted by polymeric nano and microfibers, have been considered promising scaffolds for tissue engineering strategies, mainly because they mimic, in some way, the complexity and nanoscale detail observed in real organs. The chondrogenic potential of these scaffolds has been previously demonstrated, but their osteogenic potential is not yet corroborated. In order to assess if a hierarchical structure, with nanoscale details incorporated, is an improved scaffold for bone ...

The traveling purchaser problem (TPP) is the problem of determining a tour of a purchaser that needs to buy several items in different shops such that the total amount of travel and purchase costs is minimized. Motivated by an application in machine scheduling, we study a variant of the problem with additional constraints, namely, a limit on the maximum number of markets to be visited, a limit on the number of items bought per market and where only one copy per item needs to be bought. We present ...

The physiology of B. subtilis R14 was investigated in minimal medium under excess-oxygen and oxygen-limited conditions. Growth and efficient sporulation could be achieved in excess-oxygen culture on medium with readily metabolizable carbon and nitrogen sources, which allowed high growth rate and high biomass yield. A short transition phase between the exponential growth and sporulation could be attained by formulating a medium with a well-balanced C/N ratio. Under oxygen-limitation, but in the presence ...

The sequences technique is frequently used for time domain assessment of the arterial-cardiac baroreceptor reflex sensitivity (BRS). The BRS is estimated by the slope between systolic blood pressure and RR interval values in baroreflex sequences (BSs) and an overall estimate is obtained by slope averaging. However, only 25% of all beats are in BSs with 60% of those located in 3-beat length segments. Also, in cases of BSs absence (usually associated with poor BRS function), the BRS cannot be quantified. ...

Low-flow vascular malformations are congenital overgrowths composed of abnormal blood vessels potentially causing pain, bleeding and obstruction of different organs. These diseases are caused by oncogenic mutations in the endothelium, which result in overactivation of the PI3K/AKT pathway. Lack of robust in vivo preclinical data has prevented the development and translation into clinical trials of specific molecular therapies for these diseases. Here, we demonstrate that the Pik3caH1047R activating ...
