The aim was to assess regional influences on food consumption in infants less than six months of age. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 18,929 infants participating in the Second Survey on Breastfeeding Prevalence in Brazilian State Capitals and the Federal District in 2008. Consumption rates for tea, fruit juices, formula milk, and porridge were calculated for the State capitals from the five geographic regions of the country. Food consumption was estimated by logit analyses ...

Aim: To assess KIT and PDGFRA mutations frequencies in a Portuguese series of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs). Methods: 78 GISTs were evaluated for CD117 expression and screened for mutations in KIT (exons 9, 11, 13, 14 and 17) and PDGFRA (exons 12, 14 and 18) genes. Results: KIT activating mutations were identified in 44 (56%) of the 78 GISTs. Forty cases (91%) presented a mutation in KIT exon 11, and 4 (9%) in exon 9. One case showed a 4 bp deletion in intron 14. PDGFRA mutations were observed ...

Cocaine use disorders (CUDs) represent a major public health problem in many countries. To better understand the interaction between the environmental modulations and phenotype, the aim of the present study was to investigate the DNA methylation pattern of CUD patients, who had concomitant cocaine and crack dependence, and healthy controls.

NPY is present in the retina of different species but its role is not elucidated yet. In this work, using different rat retina in vitro models (whole retina, retinal cells in culture, microglial cell cultures, rat Müller cell line and retina endothelial cell line), we demonstrated that NPY staining is present in the retina in different cell types: neurons, macroglial, microglial and endothelial cells. Retinal cells in culture express NPY Y1, Y2, Y4 and Y5 receptors. Retina endothelial cells express ...

The reconstruction of facial surgical defects is usually challenging for the dermatologic surgeon. Three different cases of facial defects in which tunneled island flaps were used are reported. In 2 cases, wide defects involving the nasal dorsum and ala were repaired using a nasolabial island flap tunneled through the lateral side of the nose. A tunneled island glabellar flap was used for medial canthus reconstruction in the third case. Despite complex pedicle dissection and frequent trapdoor deformation, ...

Many cats that are rendered to a shelter fail to find a new home. Older and other less desirable cats may face a significant amount of time in the shelter prior to adoption. Therefore, the present study compared the behaviour of domestic cats subjected to different lengths of time, room density (RD) and sex ratio in a shelter. Forty-six cats from a local shelter (Porto, Portugal) were included in the study. All subjects lived in group housing enclosures. Each cat's behaviour was recorded during 5 ...

To describe the use of different types of tobacco (manufactured and hand-rolled cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco) in the adult Mozambican population, across regions. A representative sample of 12,902 Mozambicans aged 25–64 years was evaluated in a national household survey conducted in 2003 using a structured questionnaire. The patterns of tobacco consumption were described to highlight the sex-specific differences by age and between urban and rural settings, and between the north, where most of ...

In this paper we discuss models and methods for solving the rooted distance constrained minimum spanning tree problem which is defined as follows: given a graph G=(V,E) with node set V={0,1,…,n} and edge set E, two integer weights, a cost ce and a delay we associated with each edge e of E, and a natural (time limit) number H, we wish to find a spanning tree T of the graph with minimum total cost and such that the unique path from a specified root node, node 0, to any other node has total delay not ...

In this paper, a dynamic linear approach was used over QT and RR series measured by an automatic delineator, to explore the interactions between QT interval variability (QTV) and heart rate variability (HRV). A low-order linear autoregressive model allowed to separate and quantify the QTV fractions correlated and not correlated with HRV, estimating their power spectral density measures. Simulated series and artificial ECG signals were used to assess the performance of the methods, considering a respiratory- ...

ABSTRACT The development of analytical techniques that enable the use of hair as an alternative matrix for the analysis of drugs of abuse is useful for confirming the exposure in a larger time window (weeks to months, depending on the length of the hair shaft). In the present study a methodology aimed at the simultaneous quantification of cocaine and morphine in human hair was developed and validated. After decontamination, hair samples (20 mg) were incubated with a mixture of methanol/hydrochloric ...

The aim of the current study was to explore how these emotion regulation processes are related to depression and to the sense of self-efficacy to deal with infertility in infertile patients. Gender differences were also considered. One hundred couples without known fertility problems and ...

We evaluated the response of vegetation’s photosynthetic activity to drought conditions from 1998 to 2014 over Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The connection between vegetation stress and drought events was assessed by means of a correlation analysis between the monthly Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI), at several time scales, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), as well as an assessment of the simultaneous occurrence of extremes in both indices. We aimed to describe management practices and outcomes after PDPH treated by epidural blood patch (EBP) or no EBP. Methods Following ethics committee approval, patients who developed PDPH after accidental dural puncture were recruited from participating countries and divided into two groups, those receiving EBP or no EBP. Non-contact vital signs monitoring has a wide range of applications, such as in safe drive and in health care. In mental health care, the use of non-invasive signs holds a great potential, as it would likely enhance the patient's adherence to the use of objective measures to assess their emotional experiences, hence allowing for more individualized and efficient diagnoses and treatment. In order to evaluate the possibility of emotion recognition using a non-contact system for vital signs monitoring, ...

The sequences technique is frequently used for time domain assessment of the arterial-cardiac baroreceptor reflex sensitivity (BRS). The BRS is estimated by the slope between systolic blood pressure and RR interval values in baroreflex sequences (BSs) and an overall estimate is obtained by slope averaging. However, only 25% of all beats are in BSs with 60% of those located in 3-beat length segments. Also, in cases of BSs absence (usually associated with poor BRS function), the BRS cannot be quantified. ...

Artemisinin is a polycyclic sesquiterpene lactone that is highly effective against multidrug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, the etiological agent of the most severe form of malaria. The physiology of B. subtilis R14 was investigated in minimal medium under excess-oxygen and oxygen-limited conditions. Growth and efficient sporulation could be achieved in excess-oxygen culture on medium with readily metabolizable carbon and nitrogen sources, which allowed high growth rate and high biomass yield. A short transition phase between the exponential growth and sporulation could be attained by formulating a medium with a well-balanced C/N ratio. Under oxygen-limitation, but in the presence ...
