The first results of a long-term study on the role of riparian ecotones on the population and community dynamics of Iberian stream fish are presented and discussed. Riparian and macrophyte cover, bank slope and depth were among the most important variables affecting fish distribution. In general small fish favoured shallow areas with high macrophyte cover, whereas large fish dominated in deep areas with a high riparian cover. Slight spatial changes in terrestrial prey use were found suggesting a ...

The biological characterization of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (c-AML) is an important outcome predictor. In Brazil, very little is known about the frequency of AML subgroups, although c-AML accounts for about 18% of leukemias. We carried out this study to investigate the contribution of type I and II gene mutations in the probability of overall survival (pOS) of c-AML in Brazil. Seven hundred and three de novo pediatric AML cases (2000–2015) were assessed throughout a multicentric network study. ...

Among the technologies used to recuperate cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils, phytoextraction are particularly important, where the selection of suitable plants is critical to the success of the soil remediation. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the responses of jack-bean and sorghum to Cd supply and to quantify Cd accumulation by these species grown in hydroponic culture. The plants were subjected to 0, 15, 30, or 60 μmol Cd L(-1) in the nutrient solution, and gas exchange, plant ...

Three new dibenzoylmethane derivatives were isolated from petrol extracts of the roots of Lonchocarpus latifolius and L. muehlbergianus. Molecular structures were determined from spectroscopic data, especially NMR techniques. An alkyl group bonded to the central carbon (C-8) of a natural dibenzoylmethane, had not been found before. Spectral data analysis suggested a preponderance of the respective diketotautomers.

Summary T‐cell differentiation and induction of tolerance to self‐antigens occurs mainly in the thymus. Thymic stromal cells, specifically medullary thymic epithelial cells, express a diverse set of genes encoding parenchymal organ‐specific proteins. This phenomenon has been termed promiscuous gene expression (PGE) and has been implicated in preventing organ‐specific autoimmunity by inducing T‐cell tolerance to self antigens. Early thymopoiesis and the critical factors involved in T‐cell differentiation ...

The responses of photosynthetic gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence along with changes in carbohydrate and proline levels were studied in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) during water stress and recovery. Three experiments were conducted under greenhouse and laboratory conditions. Decreased CO2 assimilation rates during water stress were largely dependent on stomatal closure, which reduced available internal CO2 and restricted water loss through transpiration. During the initial phase of stress, ...
