Real-life data associated with experimental outcomes are not always real-valued. In particular, opinions, perceptions, ratings, etc., are often assumed to be vague in nature, especially when they come from human valuations. Fuzzy numbers have extensively been considered to provide us with a convenient tool to express these vague data. In analyzing fuzzy data from a statistical perspective one finds two key obstacles, namely, the nonlinearity associated with the usual arithmetic with fuzzy data and ...

High levels of triglycerides and free fatty acids have been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) is an autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by intense whole body reduction of subcutaneous fat. Its clinical manifestations appear during the first years of life. However, DM is usually a late event. We report a patient with CGL, diagnosed at 4 months of age, who has severe hypertriglyceridemia (serum triglyceride 12.34 mmol/l ...

Kinases are downstream modulators and effectors of several cellular signaling cascades and play key roles in the development of neoplastic disease. In this study, we aimed to evaluate SRC, LYN and CKB protein and mRNA expression, as well as their promoter methylation, in gastric cancer. We found elevated expression of SRC and LYN kinase mRNA and protein but decreased levels of CKB kinase, alterations that may have a role in the invasiveness and metastasis of gastric tumors. Cell migration is a key process for the defense of pluricellular organisms against pathogens, and it involves a set of surface receptors acting in an ordered fashion to contribute directionality to the movement. Among these receptors are the integrins, which connect the cell cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix components, thus playing a central role in cell migration. Integrin clustering at focal adhesions drives actin polymerization along the cell leading edge, resulting in polarity of cell ...
