In the present work, a series of supported gold–ruthenium bimetallic catalysts of varying Au:Ru molar ratios were prepared onto ceria–zirconium mixed oxide (Ce0.62Zr0.38O2) using sequentially deposition-precipitation and impregnation techniques to add gold and ruthenium, respectively. A combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses and different transmission electron microscopy techniques as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), high-angle ...

A novel mechanochemical activation route has been applied in order to obtain the n=1–4 and ∞ members of the Sr2[Srn−1TinO3n+1] Ruddlesden–Popper series. The evolution of the (n+1)SrO:nTiO2 powder mixtures during mechanical treatment was followed by X-ray powder diffraction in all cases. Except for the 2SrO:TiO2 composition, SrTiO3 was always mechanosynthesized. High-energy milling of 2SrO:TiO2 sample resulted in the formation of nanosized Sr2TiO4, which is the only K2NiF4-type oxide prepared by mechanical ...

New Mycobacterium leprae protein antigens can contribute to improved serologic tests for leprosy diagnosis/classification and multidrug therapy (MDT) monitoring. This study describes seroreactivity to M. leprae proteins among participants from three highly endemic leprosy areas in Brazil: central-western Goiânia/Goiás (GO) (n = 225), Rondonópolis/Mato Grosso (MT) (n = 764) and northern Prata Village/Pará (PA) (n = 93). ELISA was performed to detect IgG to proteins (92f, 46f, leprosy IDRI diagnostic-1, ML0405, ...

An efficient and selective one-pot two-step method, for the synthesis of quinoxalines by oxidative coupling of vicinal diols with 1,2-phenylenediamine derivatives, has been developed by using gold nanoparticles supported on nanoparticulated ceria (Au/CeO2) or hydrotalcite (Au/HT) as catalysts and air as oxidant, in the absence of any homogeneous base. Reaction kinetics shows that the reaction controlling step is the oxidation of the diol to α-hydroxycarbonyl compound. Furthermore, a one-pot three- ...

Leprosy inflammatory episodes [type 1 (T1R) and type 2 (T2R) reactions] represent the major cause of irreversible nerve damage. Leprosy serology is known to be influenced by the patient's bacterial index (BI) with higher positivity in multibacillary patients (MB) and specific multidrug therapy (MDT) reduces antibody production. This study evaluated by ELISA antibody responses to leprosy Infectious Disease Research Institute diagnostic-1 (LID-1) fusion protein and phenolic glycolipid I (PGL-I) in 100 paired ...

Leprosy is a complex chronic, infectious dermato-neurological disease that affects the skin and peripheral nerves especially during immuno-inflammatory episodes known as type 1/T1R and type 2/T2R reactions. This study investigated the in situ expression of CD25+Foxp3+ Treg cells and TGF-β1, IFN-γ, IL-17 in leprosy T1R and T2R. Tregs were evaluated in 114 skin biopsies from 74 leprosy patients: 56 T1R (28-paired reaction-free/reactional biopsies, 28 unpaired T1R), 18 T2R (12 paired reaction-free/reactional ...

Catalyst design: First principles calculations predict that phosgene can be substituted by dimethyl carbonate (DMC) in the carbamoylation of aromatic amines when using a CeO2 catalyst preferentially exposing the low energy {111} facet. Experimental results confirm the theoretical predictions, and CeO2 nano-octahedra terminated by low energy {111} facets show high activity and selectivity toward the desired dicarbamoylated product.

After calcination at 773 K (high surface area materials HS: SBET = 96 ± 1 m2 g-1) both samples present similar characteristics in XRD, Raman and TEM (pseudocubic phase t‘ ‘), and XPS/Ar+-etching experiments. Metal nanoparticles with precisely controlled size are highly attractive for heterogeneous catalysis. However, their poor thermal stability remains a major concern in their application at realistic operating conditions. This paper demonstrates the possibility of synthesizing gold nanoparticles with exceptional thermal stability. This has been achieved by using a simple conventional deposition–precipitation technique. The material employed as catalyst consists of gold supported on a TiO2-impregnated ...

Temperature sensing in biological media (cells, tissues, and living organisms) has become essential in the development of the last generation of diagnostics and therapeutic strategies. Thermometry can be used for early detection of different diseases, such as cancer, stroke, or inflammation processes, one of whose incipient symptoms is the appearance of localized temperature singularities. Luminescence nanothermometry, as a tool to accurately provide temperature sensing in biological media, requires ...

Magnesia-supported trimetallic Pt–Ru–Sn catalysts prepared through a cluster and a conventional synthetic route have been investigated in terms of their structural properties and their catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of citral. FTIR results indicate that the majority of the stabilizing ligands remain attached to the PtRu5(μ-SnPh2)(C)(CO)15 cluster used following impregnation onto the MgO support. Colloidal cerium oxide (CeO2) nanocrystals prepared by hydrothermal synthesis were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and three-dimensional electron tomography (3D-ET). HRTEM images of individual CeO2 nanocrystals were then simulated by Blochwave and multislice simulations to determine the atomic arrangement and terminating atoms. The edge length distributions were between 5.0 and 8.0 nm with an average edge length of 6.7 nm. The HRTEM images showed that the CeO2 ...

An inverse powder system composed of CeO2 nanoparticles dispersed over a CuO−Cu matrix is proposed as a novel catalyst for the water−gas shift reaction. This inverse CeO2/CuO−Cu catalyst exhibits a higher activity than standard Cu/CeO2 catalysts.
