Generally, detection of water adulteration in milk is performed using a cryoscope. However, the equipment may present erroneous results when other adulterants, e.g., urea, are added to milk. One of the techniques capable of overcoming situations in which the cryoscope fails to detect fraud is near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Unfortunately, the development of an instrument based on this technology is challenging due to the influence of external factors and low signal-to-noise ratio. This paper presents ...

The International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC) is a global federation of clinical research networks that work collaboratively to prevent illness and deaths from infectious disease outbreaks. In 2014, we proposed that effective and timely research during outbreaks of emerging infections would benefit from pre-prepared research tools, global collaboration, and research-ready clinical networks.1 After applying this research model to several outbreaks, and particularly ...

PURPOSE: To investigate the morphological aspects of the healing of traumatic wounds in rats using low-power laser. METHODS: Twenty four non isogenic, young adult male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) weighing between 200 and 300g was used. The animals were randomly distributed into two groups: Control (GC) and Laser (GL), with 12 animals each. After shaving, anesthesia was performed in the dorsal region and then a surgical procedure using a scapel was carried out to make the traumatic wound. GL received ...

ABSTRACT Mycorrhizae provide several benefits to coffee plants. This study evaluated whether these benefits influence the damage caused by the Bidens pilosa competition with coffee seedlings. A randomized blocks design was used, with treatments established in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme (presence and absence of B. pilosa interference in non-inoculated control or plants inoculated with either Claroideoglomus etunicatum or Dentiscutata heterogama). Coffee seedlings were inoculated with fungi spores and ...

Considering that antioxidant activities are directly related to carotenoid functionalities, it is necessary to use techniques that promote the stability of these natural pigments. This systematic review aimed to gather evidence on the effect of encapsulation techniques on the maintenance and/or enhancement of the antioxidant activity of carotenoids. The study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020142065). Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Virtual Health Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and ...

To assess immunogenicity and safety of the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV23) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients under conventional DMARDs with or without anti-TNF therapy. The influences of demographic data, disease activity and treatment on immune response and the potential deleterious effects of vaccine on disease itself were also evaluated. 17 JIA patients immediately pre-etanercept (Group 1) and 10 JIA patients on stable dose of methotrexate (Group 2) received one ...

The fear of biological warfare agents (BWA) use by terrorists is the major concern of the security agencies and health authorities worldwide today. The non-existence of vaccines or drugs against most BWA and the possibility of genetic modified strains has turned the search for new drugs to a state of urgency. Fast in silico techniques are, therefore, perfect tools for this task once they can quickly provide structures of several new lead compounds for further experimental work. Here we try to present ...

Objective. To evaluate the immunogenicity of the anti-influenza A H1N1/2009 vaccine in RA and spondyloarthritis (SpA) patients receiving distinct classes of anti-TNF agents compared with patients receiving DMARDs and healthy controls. Methods. One hundred and twenty patients (RA, n = 41; AS, n = 57; PsA, n = 22) on anti-TNF agents (monoclonal, n = 94; soluble receptor, n = 26) were compared with 116 inflammatory arthritis patients under DMARDs and 117 healthy controls. Abstract Background Progressive macular hypomelanosis (PMH) is a dermatosis of unknown etiology. It has been concluded that it involves the presence of Propionibacterium acnes , a saprophyte of the pilosebaceous follicles. In our study, we investigated the presence of P. acnes in lesional and non‐lesional skin of patients with PMH through quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and bacterial culture from a skin fragment. Obesity is characterized by an adipose tissue mass expansion that presents a risk to health, associated with a chronic increase in circulating inflammatory mediators. Anti-inflammatory agents are an obesity alternative treatment. However, the lack of effective agents indicates the need to assess the mechanisms and identify effective therapeutic targets. The present work identified and described the mechanisms of action of anti-inflammatory agents in adipose tissue in experimental studies. The review ...

The steady increase in the number of health technologies and advances in associated research generate management challenges in the choice of technologies to be made available to the public. From 2011, the process of inclusion, exclusion and alteration of technologies to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) has undergone major transformations, such as the creation of the National Committee on Technology Incorporation (CONITEC). This study analyzed the decisions of CONITEC since its inception until ...

Abstract Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a clinically complex and challenging disease, that leads to skin fibrosis. Its most frequent complication is interstitial lung disease (ILD), which leads to a worse prognosis. In this situation, cyclophosphamide is considered the gold standard for its treatment, despite the controversies regarding its efficacy and toxicity. However, studies using rituximab (RTX) have shown that this drug may be a promising therapeutic option. Objectives This paper objective ...

Ruthenium polypyridine complexes have shown promise as agents for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and tools for molecular biology (chromophore-assisted light inactivation). To accomplish these tasks, it is important to have at least target selectivity and great reactive oxygen species (ROS) photogeneration: two properties that are not easily found in the same molecule. To prepare such new agents, we synthesized two new ruthenium complexes that combine an efficient DNA binding moiety (dppz ligand) together ...

The unique properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as their large surface area and high porosity have attracted considerable attention in recent decades. The MOFs are a promising class of materials for developing highly efficient biosensors due to these same properties. Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is widespread in the general population. Iodinated (IC) or gadolinium-based contrast media (Gd) may decrease renal function in high-risk patients. This study tested the hypothesis that VDD is a predisposing factor for IC- or Gd-induced nephrotoxicity. To this end, male Wistar rats were fed standard (SD) or vitamin D-free diet for 30 days. IC (diatrizoate), Gd (gadoterate meglumine), or 0.9% saline was then administered intravenously and six groups were obtained as the following: ...

In this work, a number of lipidic amino alcohols wereas synthesized and evaluated in vitro on cultures of Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania chagasi. Nine amino alcohols showed inhibition of L. chagasi growth, and seven of them showed inhibition of L. amazonensis with IC(50) below 10 microm. Compound 11f was more active than the reference drug amphotericin B against L. chagasi promastigote forms.
