Sweet sorghum is a sugar rich crop that has been considered an alternative feedstock to sugarcane for ethanol production. A full year production cycle is possible as sweet sorghum is capable of multiple harvests. In this work we present experimental results for stalk biomass and sugar productivities, individual sugar distribution at harvest, ethanol yield and productivity of several sweet sorghum varieties and three harvests, the first cut during the rainy period and two ratoon crops during the ...

Prophylactic doses of 120 mg of iron (Fe) are commonly used to prevent Fe-deficiency anemia in vulnerable populations, especially in developing countries. Evidence shows that residual Fe in the large bowel may alter the normal antioxidant capacity of the fecal stream. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of dietary antioxidants from the Carotino Tocotrienol-Carotene Mixed Concentrate (CTCMC) on the depletion of fecal antioxidant capacity by oral Fe supplementation. In total, 17 healthy male adults ...

Among Latin American countries, Colombia is considered a low-risk area for multiple sclerosis (MS) and no studies on MS prevalence have been conducted in any of the country’s large urban settings. To fill this gap and assess the prevalence of MS in Bogotá as of December 31, 2002, this study reviewed the clinical records of patients diagnosed with MS in most Bogotá hospitals. This review produced a sample of 296 patients with an MS diagnosis whose reliability was verified by a neurologist with expertise ...

Protection against the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite Babesia bovis depends on both strong innate and adaptive immune response, this latter involving the presentation of parasite antigens to CD4+ T-lymphocytes by professional antigen-presenting cells. Secretion of Th1 cytokines by CD4+ T cell is also very important for isotype switching to IgG2, the best opsonising antibody isotype in cattle, to target extracellular parasites and parasite antigens displayed at the erythrocyte surface. This paper discusses the evaluation of energy potential of palm oil for the generation of electricity in isolated communities. In Brazil, the energy sector culture has historically been directed almost exclusively toward major projects geared to meet the demands of those sectors of society that have the greatest economic and political influence. Prioritizing industrialization and an accelerated urbanization, they have oriented the national energy system toward centralized production of enormous ...

The high amount of energy consumption demanded by buildings entails the worsening of several environmental issues. Therefore, actions to make use of this resource more efficient become necessary. The most used methods of Building Energy Modeling (BEM) designated to assess the functionality of such actions are excessively complex and, in many cases, generate unreliable results. Thus, this work aims to elaborate an approach based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) to improve energy efficiency in ...

Real-life data associated with experimental outcomes are not always real-valued. In particular, opinions, perceptions, ratings, etc., are often assumed to be vague in nature, especially when they come from human valuations. Fuzzy numbers have extensively been considered to provide us with a convenient tool to express these vague data. In analyzing fuzzy data from a statistical perspective one finds two key obstacles, namely, the nonlinearity associated with the usual arithmetic with fuzzy data and ...

This paper focuses on supplying electrical power for remote communities of the Brazilian Amazon using regional biomass, specifically palm oil biomass, as a primary energy source. The use of Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) as fuel, is indicated for isolated communities, where the hydro plants or the installation of transmissions line are impracticable. The use of vegetable oils produced in the communities, is a solution when an adequate infrastructure to extracting the oil is available. Brazil is able ...

The oxidative dehydrogenation (OXDH) of n-butane and 1-butene on undoped and K-doped alumina-supported vanadia catalysts has been studied. The low selectivity to OXDH products on alumina-supported vanadia catalysts is a consequence of the isomerization of olefins (low temperatures) and the formation of carbon oxides (high temperatures) on acid sites. The presence of potassium results in a decrease of the number of acid sites and a higher selectivity to OXDH products from both n-butane and 1-butene. ...

Kinases are downstream modulators and effectors of several cellular signaling cascades and play key roles in the development of neoplastic disease. In this study, we aimed to evaluate SRC, LYN and CKB protein and mRNA expression, as well as their promoter methylation, in gastric cancer. We found elevated expression of SRC and LYN kinase mRNA and protein but decreased levels of CKB kinase, alterations that may have a role in the invasiveness and metastasis of gastric tumors.
