Background The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Network recently comprehensively catalogued the molecular aberrations in 487 high-grade serous ovarian cancers, with much remaining to be elucidated regarding the microRNAs (miRNAs). Here, using TCGA ovarian data, we surveyed the miRNAs, in the context of their predicted gene targets. Methods and Results Integration of miRNA and gene patterns yielded evidence that proximal pairs of miRNAs are processed from polycistronic primary transcripts, and that intronic ...

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), after activity-dependent secretion from neurons, modulates critical nervous system functions. Recently, a variant in the human bdnf gene, resulting in a valine to methionine substitution in the prodomain, has been shown to lead to defective regulated secretion from neurons and memory impairment. Here, we report a novel function for a Vps10p domain protein, sortilin, in controlling BDNF sorting to the regulated secretory pathway. Sortilin interacts specifically ...

Abstract Purpose There is a lack of knowledge about the early phase of severe infection. This report describes the early chain of care in bacteraemia as follows: (a) compare patients who were and were not transported by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS); (b) describe various aspects of the EMS chain; and (c) describe factors of importance for the delay to the start of intravenous antibiotics. It was hypothesized that, for patients with suspected sepsis judged by the EMS clinician, the delay until ...

In late July, 2023, SARS-CoV-2 surveillance programmes identified a new, highly mutated omicron subvariant, BA.2.86.1 Initial estimates place the effective reproduction number of BA.2.86 at 1·29-times greater than that of XBB.1.5 and near equivalent to that of EG.5.1, one of the most rapidly expanding XBB subvariants.2 Since the emergence of BA.2.86, multiple countries have reported its presence, including an outbreak in a British care home, with an attack rate above 85%, where the majority of infected ...

Polystyrene-based nanocomposite films containing up to 20 wt% laponite clay have been prepared by emulsion polymerization. Significant increases in the storage and tensile moduli were observed in both the glassy and rubbery state on laponite addition. However, whereas in the glassy state these increases were correlated with the extent of exfoliation of the laponite, in the rubbery state they were more dependent on the overall laponite content. These results are discussed in terms of the observed ...

Urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary loss of urine and is a common condition in middle-aged and elderly women and men. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is caused by leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, and exercise, even standing leads to increased intra-abdominal pressure. Other types of UI also exist such as urge incontinence (also called overactive bladder), which is a strong and unexpected sudden urge to urinate, mixed forms of UI that result in symptoms of both ...

Background: Ambulance professionals often address conflicts between ethical values. As individuals’ values represent basic convictions of what is right or good and motivate behaviour, research is needed to understand their value profiles. Objectives: To translate and adapt the Managerial Values Profile to Spanish and Swedish, and measure the presence of utilitarianism, moral rights and/or social justice in ambulance professionals’ value profiles in Spain and Sweden. Methods: The instrument was translated ...

Although mucosal leishmaniasis is a prominent disease, it has been studied only to a limited extent. It is classically treated with parenteral antimony or, as a last resort, amphotericin B.We treated Bolivian mucosal leishmaniasis due to Leishmania braziliensis with the oral agent miltefosine, 2.5 mg/kg/day for 28 days, and followed-up for 12 months.Seventy-two patients were evaluable. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by loss of tolerance against nuclear and cytoplasmic self-antigens, induction of immunity and tissue inflammation. Lupus nephritis (LN), the most important predictor of morbidity in SLE, develops in almost 30% of SLE patients at disease onset and in up to 50-60% within the first 10 years. Firstly, in this review, we put the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease into a conceptual frame, giving emphasis to the role of the innate ...

Abstract A waterborne latex‐based technique, in which functionalized laponite is attached to PS and acrylic latex particles, is used to prepare films containing up to 50 wt% laponite. At high laponite contents this leads to a cellular arrangement of the laponite‐rich layers, concentrated at the latex particle interfaces. MDSC shows that a significant proportion of the organic matrix does not contribute to the glass transition. However, this “rigid” matrix fraction arises from intercalation of the ...

Abstract Seventy five percent of the world's food crops benefit from insect pollination. Hence, there has been increased interest in how global change drivers impact this critical ecosystem service. Because standardized data on crop pollination are rarely available, we are limited in our capacity to understand the variation in pollination benefits to crop yield, as well as to anticipate changes in this service, develop predictions, and inform management actions. Here, we present CropPol, a dynamic, ...

The chapter focuses on a fleet energy management approach with the aim of reducing operation and maintenance costs. A state-of-the-art is presented for the different proposed fleet management approaches. In order to tackle the digitalization challenge of exploiting the large data volume of a fleet of vehicles, a methodology for improving electrified buses energy efficiency at fleet level is proposed. In addition, an energetic analysis of a fleet based on this methodology has been performed. The ...

The proposed sensor network multiplexes low-cost intensity point sensors based on fiber-optic tapers, which are able to measure vibrations in the 0.01 to 50 Hz frequency range. The sensor network with a double-bus is a low noise configuration, which offers a higher optical signal to noise ratio and dynamic range than a single-bus. Thus, the number of sensors to be multiplexed could increase ...

MicroRNAs are short RNA molecules that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. Today, microRNA target prediction remains challenging since very few have been experimentally validated and sequence-based predictions have large numbers of false positives. Furthermore, due to the different measuring rules used in each database of predicted interactions, the selection of the most reliable ones requires extensive knowledge about each algorithm. Here we propose two methods to measure the confidence ...
