Abstract Objectives We hypothesized that the amount of antigen produced in the body during a COVID-19 infection might differ between patients, and that maximum concentrations would predict the degree of both inflammation and outcome for patients. Methods Eighty-four hospitalized and SARS-CoV-2 PCR swab-positive patients, were followed with blood sampling every day until discharge or death. A total of 444 serial EDTA plasma samples were analyzed for a range of biomarkers: SARS-CoV-2 nuclear antigen ...

Abstract Actinobaculum schaalii can cause urinary tract infections and septicemia but is difficult to identify by cultivation. To obtain a fast diagnosis and identify A. schaalii, we developed a TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR. Routine urine samples were obtained from 177 hospitalized patients and 75 outpatients in Viborg County, Denmark, in 2008–2009. The PCR detected A. schaalii in 22% of samples from patients >60 years of age. This assay showed that A. schaalii is more common than implied by ...

Exercise increases pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) in exercising and nonexercising muscles, known as exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH). No studies have investigated the test-retest reliability of change in PPTs after aerobic exercise. Primary objectives were to compare the effect on PPTs after an incremental bicycling exercise compared with quiet rest and to investigate the relative and absolute test-retest reliability of the test stimulus (PPT) and the absolute and relative EIH response in exercising ...

Self-focused thoughts may be both adaptive and maladaptive. We asked 67 patients who had received a colon-cancer diagnosis within the past 1–7 months to complete measures of rumination, reflection, intrusive and avoidance symptoms and depressive symptoms. At 8 months follow-up they completed the same measures. Higher rumination at time 1 was associated with more symptoms at both times 1 and 2. Reflection at time 1 did not show any associations with symptoms at time 1 and 2. However, time 1 reflection ...

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels that belong to the superfamily of Cys loop receptors. Valuable insight into the orthosteric ligand binding to nAChRs in recent years has been obtained from the crystal structures of acetylcholine-binding proteins (AChBPs) that share significant sequence homology with the amino-terminal domains of the nAChRs. alpha-Conotoxins, which are isolated from the venom of carnivorous marine snails, selectively inhibit the signaling of ...

Abstract The microstructure of hard carbons can be designed to maximize their performance as anodes for sodium‐ion batteries. However, the nature of the electrolyte is also decisive in the capacity and long‐term stability. Here, hard carbons with a tailored bimodal pore network of internal micropores interconnected through mesopores are studied as sodium‐ion battery anodes. The evolution of their solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is analyzed in three different electrolytes (NaPF 6 in an ether‐based ...

This paper presents algorithms for computing the Gröbner fan of an arbitrary polynomial ideal. The computation involves enumeration of all reduced Gröbner bases of the ideal. Our algorithms are based on a uniform definition of the Gröbner fan that applies to both homogeneous and non-homogeneous ideals and a proof that this object is a polyhedral complex. We show that the cells of a Gröbner fan can easily be oriented acyclically and with a unique sink, allowing their enumeration by the memory-less ...

Abstract Action potential (AP) generation is the key to information-processing in the brain. Although APs are normally initiated in the axonal initial segment, developmental adaptation or prolonged network activity may alter the initiation site geometry thus affecting cell excitability. Here we find that hippocampal dentate granule cells adapt their spiking threshold to the kinetics of the ongoing dendrosomatic excitatory input by expanding the AP-initiation area away from the soma while also decelerating ...

The aim of this paper is to give a constructive proof of one of the basic theorems of tropical geometry: given a point on a tropical variety (defined using initial ideals), there exists a Puiseuxvalued "lift" of this point in the algebraic variety. This theorem is so fundamental because it justifies why a tropical variety (defined combinatorially using initial ideals) carries information about algebraic varieties: it is the image of an algebraic variety over the Puiseux series under the valuation map. ...

We describe an algorithm which finds binomials in a given ideal $$I\subset \mathbb {Q}[x_1,\dots ,x_n]$$ and in particular decides whether binomials exist in I at all. Binomials in polynomial ideals can be well hidden. For example, the lowest degree of a binomial cannot be bounded as a function of the number of indeterminates, the degree of the generators, or the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity. We approach the detection problem by reduction to the Artinian case using tropical geometry. The Artinian case ...

We present the results of an inventory and status assessment of alien species in Norway. The inventory covered all known multicellular neobiota, 2496 in total, 1039 of which were classified as naturalised. The latter constitute c. 3% of all species known to be stably reproducing in Norway. These figures are higher than expected from Norway’s latitude, which may be due a combination of climatic and historical factors, as well as sampling effort. Most of the naturalised neobiota were plants (71%), ...

The circuit ideal, $\ica$, of a configuration $\A = \{\a_1, ..., \a_n\} \subset \Z^d$ is the ideal generated by the binomials ${\x}^{\cc^+} - {\x}^{\cc^-} \in \k[x_1, ..., x_n]$ as $\cc = \cc^+ - \cc^- \in \Z^n$ varies over the circuits of $\A$. This ideal is contained in the toric ideal, $\ia$, of $\A$ which has numerous applications and is nontrivial to compute. Since circuits can be computed using linear algebra and the two ideals often coincide, it is worthwhile to understand when equality occurs. In this paper we study $\ica$ in relation ...

Abstract The structure of insulin, a glucose homeostasis‐controlling hormone, is highly conserved in all vertebrates and stabilized by three disulfide bonds. Recently, we designed a novel insulin analogue containing a four th disulfide bond located between positions A10‐B4. The N‐terminus of insulin's B‐chain is flexible and can adapt multiple conformations. We examined how well disulfide bond predictions algorithms could identify disulfide bonds in this region of insulin. In order to identify stable ...

A series of carbamoylcholine and acetylcholine analogues were synthesized and characterized pharmacologically at neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Several of the compounds displayed low nanomolar binding affinities to the alpha4beta2 nAChR and pronounced selectivity for this subtype over alpha3beta4, alpha4beta4, and alpha7 nAChRs. The high nAChR activity of carbamoylcholine analogue 5d was found to reside in its R-enantiomer, a characteristic most likely true for all other compounds ...

The Gröbner walk is an algorithm for conversion between Gröbner bases for different term orders. It is based on the polyhedral geometry of the Gröbner fan and involves tracking a line between cones representing the initial and target term order. An important parameter is the explicit numerical perturbation of this line. This usually involves both time and space, demanding arithmetic of integers much larger than the input numbers. In this paper we show how the explicit line may be replaced by a formal ...
